Yanto Awerkion was arrested for his involvement in a pro-independence petition which gathered more than 1.8m West Papuan signatures.

The petition, calling for a free vote on independence, had been outlawed by Indonesian authorities but was smuggled out of the region and delivered to the United Nations in September.

The 27-year-old man is deputy chair of the Timika branch of the pro-independence West Papua National Committee (KNPB). According to his supporters he was arrested after getting on stage to speak about the petition at an event in May.

US apologises to Japan over repeat accidents "IndyWatch Feed Niugini"

Japan says the US has apologised for a series of recent accidents on its territory involving American military equipment.

The incidents on the southern island of Okinawa included the emergency landings of two US military helicopters.

Okinawa Governor Takeshi Onaga said he was "lost for words" and wanted the US military to "feel ashamed" over the incidents.

The island hosts the largest US military presence in Japan.

Over the past few years, a number of accidents and crimes have led to growing local opposition to the US base.

Speaking to reporters, Japanese Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera confirmed he had received an apology from his American counterpart:

"The US Defence Secretary James Mattis told me about the details of the emergency landings of US aircraft and apologised for the situation where such incidents have been happening one after the other.

"Mr Mattis said the US fully understood the situation and would deal with it sincerely as a serious issue."

On Monday, a US attack helicopter made an emergency landing in the grounds of a hotel on the island.

The helicopter crew landed the aircraft because a warning light had come on, Japanese public broadcaster NHK reports.

On Saturday, another US military helicopter made an emergency landing on an Okinawan beach because of a faulty rotor.

No-one was injured in either incident.

The US presence on Okinawa in southern Japan is a key part of the post-war security alliance between the two countries. The base houses some 26,000 US troops.

In 2016, the murder of a woman was linked to an ex-Marine employed at one of the bases, which led to a temporary ban on alcohol as well as a midnight curfew.

The US government wants to move Futenma, the largest Marine base in Okinawa, to a more remote location on the island.

But Mr Onaga is leading a campaign to get the US military base off the island completely.

The True Value of Bitcoin "IndyWatch Feed National"

By Chris Martenson of Peak Prosperity

So in the past week, Ive been asked for advice on Bitcoin by my brother-in-law, my local realtor, and close friends from as far away as Texas.

None of them cared to learn what it actually is. Or how it works. They just wanted to understand why suddenly so many folks they know are trying to buy Bitcoin hand over fist. And, of course, should they buy in now, too?

If you (or people you care about) have similar questions, this report is for you.

A Brave New World

Remember the scene from the movie Avatar, where the main character first explores the alien world of Pandora? I found that scene astonishing and beautiful. Hes encountering an entirely new and completely foreign ecosystem.  Every element is fascinating and wondrous, even the dangerous elements yet it all still follows understandable rules.

Everything is involved in either gathering sunlight or eating something else that had. Every niche is filled. Every organism has its own strategy: some light up, some fly, some run, some crawl. As entirely alien as everything is, if you understand the basics of how organisms filled their niches on Earth, you have a great starting point for understanding of the rules of life on Pandora.

Similarly, a great way to begin to understand the new world opened up by Bitcoin (and the other cryptocurrencies) is to realize that its an ecosystem that, at its heart, maps neatly into the universe you already understand. A few examples: payments, identity, contracts, verification, and record keeping (ledgers).

As with any ecosystem in nature, a new organism will survive and flourish if and only if its more efficient and effective than the prior model. For example, nothing has displaced sharks in the past 425 million years because theyre extremely efficient in their niche. To displace them, a new ocean predator would have to come along that does what they do faster, better, and (energetically) cheaper.

So the operative questions we need to keep in mind when looking at the brave new world of digital currencies are: What problem(s) are they solving?, and, Are their solutions faster, better, and/or cheaper?

These are critical questions to answer. When a new technology is first introduced, all manner of fanciful thinking can cloud peoples better judgment with dreams of easy riches. Think back to 1999: as long as dot com was added to the end of a business name, it could raise abundant funds to pursue all manner of impractical ideas. How well did that work out? Just remember, and; all certified capital destroying ideas.

Investors would have benefited f...

Join the queue "IndyWatch Feed Niugini"

Recent comments by Peter Dutton on Sudanese crime in Melbourne, in support of the Victorian Liberals' attempts to court that old political tart Laura Norder, underline two failures of strategy: in his portfolio, and within the Victoria Liberals in their quest for state government this November.

The end of the line

Immigration policy in Australia was set at the turn of the century by then-Immigration Minister Phillip Ruddock, backed by John Howard and his government and only ever tweaked by successive governments since then.

The first thing to say about immigration to Australia overall is that it has increased significantly this century. Where the crackdown has come, and the headlines, is in the refugee and asylum-seeker intakes.

Ruddock developed the idea of a 'queue' for refugees - yes, the world was full of desperate people fleeing war and persecution, but all that was required for such people to enter Australia was to "join the queue", fill out some forms and applications would be processed in due course. People who paid people-smugglers and arrived in Australia by boat without visas were "queue jumpers", denying places on the small (and successively reduced) quota for refugee intake to those who did all the right things and waited patiently.

Here's where Dutton has torpedoed that policy, and made himself look silly: successive Immigration ministers from Ruddock to Morrison told us there were people waiting patiently in refugee camps in Africa unable to enter Australia because bad people from the Middle East tried to jump the queue by coming here on boats. None of the people on Nauru or Manus are from South Sudan. They are people who have come here through the very vetting systems that Dutton now oversees.

If you agree with Dutton that Sudanese gangs are terrifying Melbourne, then it follows that he has failed to vet these people properly. You can't believe that Dutton, with his inflated powers as Home Affairs Minister, is keeping Australia safe if you also accept that he has waved through the very people apparently causing this mayhem. Say what you will about Daniel Andrews, his government simply has no role in immigration vetting. Why detain people at Nauru, Manus, Woodville or anywhere else when you are clearly so careless? Dutton is undermining his own narrative:
"But the short answer is that, if people haven't integrated, if they are not abiding by our laws, if they don't adhere to our culture, then they are not welcome here."
Bit late for that champ.

No journalist has called him on it. Credulous dickheads like...

The Trans Lobby Hates This Man For Proving Sex-Change Regret Is Real "IndyWatch Feed National"

Is regret permissible? And if you regret something in your life, should you be allowed to talk about it with others? Publicly? The answer is so obviously yes that any reasonable person would be baffled to even hear such questions. Thats because regret is simply part of being human.

But what if you regret trying to change your sex? Or maybe youre just tired of propping up a persona? Worse, what if you regret having all of the surgery to promote the illusion of a sex change? This is the case with Walt Heyer, who lived as a woman for nearly a decade then de-transitioned after coming to terms with the fact that he was born male.

He has written books about his experience and has a website called Today Heyer is inundated with calls and emails from transgender individuals who regret their decisions, but feel they must live in the shadows.

Interest in Walts website has exploded over the past couple of years, especially after murmurs of regret started getting a bit of coverage in the news. Walts website receives about 25,000 visits in any given month, and at least a thousand transgender people have personally sought him out to talk to him about their regrets.

Detransitioners face a lonely and difficult road in todays era of political correctness. Hollywood, the media, and academia promote a culture hostile to them for even considering changing their minds. This leaves regretters with virtually no place to go to talk about their feelings. The near-total politicization of the field of psychiatry now calls for the total affirmation of transgenderism and implicit punishment for those who dont comply. This means regretters have a hard time even finding a therapist willing to talk openly and honestly with them about the possibility of de-transitioning.

Trans Fatigue Is Setting In

Trans-mania probably peaked at some point in the past year or so. Early in the wake of the sexual revolution, gender benders got increasing press coverage. It built up over the decades, and I think well look back and see Bruce Jenners 2015 Vanity Fair cover story as the high-water mark of the trans fad. The media and the trans lobby is certainly in denial about this. But a lot of folks are feeling a decline in trans-mania.

Society is now in the throes of trans fatigue. This is reflected in the profusion of newer websites openly explor...

Fluoridation of the Gunnedah water supply is expected to commence in 2020.

The news has been met with resistance by fluoride opponents, including Gunnedahs Wendy Carpenter who said the Facebook group Its ok to say no to fluoride in Gunnedahs water will continue to lobby against water fluoridation.

We will keep fighting because I know there are a lot of people who are unhappy with the decision, Mrs Carpenter said.

I think for the time being its important for us to let the dust settle and see where we exactly go from here.

We are going to keep informing people of material that is out there and helping them to see the risks of fluoride.

The Gunnedah local said the debate had started an open discussion about fluoride.

The best thing is a lot more people know about it that otherwise wouldnt have, she said.

It shouldnt be an emotive decision and I think with more discussion and sharing of facts it becomes less emotive.

PNG Attorney-General Davis Steven condemns attack on Chief Justice Sir Injia "IndyWatch Feed Niugini"

The Attorney-General of Papua New Guinea, Hon. Davis Steven MP, has condemned the attack on the Chief Justice, Sir Salamo Injia, by a group of men in Enga yesterday.

It is understood the motivation behind the assault was a local issue between villages, and the Attorney-General said there can be no toleration for such acts and those behind will feel the full force of the law.

"The cowardly assault on Sir Salamo Injia by an unruly mob is despicable, the Attorney-General said.

"On behalf of the Prime Minister, and the Government, we are all grateful to know that Sir Salamo is safe and I commend the police officers who provided protection.

Regardless of local motivation behind the incident, an attack on a Chief Justice is an attack on the Judiciary and our system of Government.

The State must protect this important office in the interest of the people of the country.

"Such behaviour will not be tolerated, and our police and will deal with the people involved in this incident.

I expect the perpetrators to feel the full force of law enforcement, and they will answer for their actions.

I have asked for a situation report on the matter from the Office of the Chief Justice, Police Ministry and the Secretary for National Judicial Staff Services.

Sir Salamo Injia is a leader in our Nation, he is highly respected in Papua New Guinea and around the world, and this is how he has been treated by cowards with mob mentality.

What image does this send to people around our country and to our friends around the world?

The people involved in this attack are an embarrassment to the Nation and should hang their heads in shame.

American Diplomacy with North Korea and Vietnam "IndyWatch Feed National"

Human Wrongs Watch

By Johan Galtung*

8 Jan 2018 TRANSCEND Media Service

Foreword to Michael Haas Book

Johan Galtung

What is that American Diplomacy, after US bombing killed 3,5 million in Pyongyang in 1952 and the US Army killed 3 million in Vietnam from 1961 (Kennedy) to 30 Apr 1975 (Ford)?  Softer?

This very rich, well researched book by Michael Haasa senior, major US political scientistgives detailed softer empirical, factual answers in Part II.  Indeed, highly recommended.

In this foreword, however, I will explore US deep culture implications for US foreign policy, close to American Diplomacy.

The US self-image as successor to Israel as MFNmost favored nationby God, with Chosen People-Promised Land, CPPL, status, is from 1620, on Mayflower.

Since about Year 70 Israel clearly no longer enjoyed CPPL status; that was under King David and under King Solomon.

The position as CPPL was empty, may those with credentials apply. Puritan Pilgrims from East Anglia via Leiden in Holland, did, and according to themselves successfully so....

Australian Accused: #metoo Fall Out List Grows To 7 Men "IndyWatch Feed National"

FIRST PUBLISHED December 18, 2017: Hollywood and America are reeling and Australia is about to be. At least, thats been the growing expectation in Australian media for the last few months.

In the wake of the Harvey Weinstein revelations and the global #metoo campaign, dozens of powerful men in America have been outed as serial sexual harassers, abusers or rapists.

The dam, however, hasnt yet burst in Australia. So far, only seven men a politician, three entertainers, a lawyer, a musician and a music producer have been publicly accused of sexual misconduct, and unlike the outpouring of apologies from Hollywood, in Australia all seven of the men have so far vehemently denied the allegations levelled against them, although one has issued a partial apology for his conduct towards a 16-year-old girl.

Brief details of each case are printed below. Well keep updating this list as it inevitably grows.

EXPLAINER: The #metoo Allegations And How Media Defends Them In A Defamation Action "IndyWatch Feed National"

With fresh allegations of Australian men behaving badly, defamation law expert Hannah Marshall from Marque Lawyers explains what defamation is, and how it can be defended. And sometimes cant be.

A new day, a new sexual harassment revelation, and a new set of well-worked defamation lawyers (disclosure: including us, for NM). Weinstein, Waterstreet, Burke, Rush, McLachlan, and the rest; theyve all been defamed. The real question is whether the defamation is defensible. Enter the lawyers.

The first, best defence to a defamation claim is truth. If you can prove the truth of a defamatory article, then you win. Nothing else comes into it. The kind of truth were talking about is what you can prove in court.

Disgraced Hollywood producer, Harvey Weinstein.Disgraced Hollywood producer, Harvey Weinstein.

In a lot of the sexual harassment stories, its one persons word against anothers. In court, the judge or jury has to decide who is more believable. That means you dont know for certain whether they will believe your side of the story before you publish.

So for example in the Waterstreet story, Tina Huang provided a sworn statement detailing her experience, along with a bunch of contemporaneous emails and other messages supporting her statement. Later, when a copy of the video she was shown emerged, she provided a further sworn statement confirming that was the video that she was shown.

Googles AI Center in China: Poaching Talent "IndyWatch Feed National"

January 8, 2018 (Ulson Gunnar NEO) Artificial Intelligence (AI) is already fundamentally changing information technology and stands poised to permeate and transform technology both online and off ranging from manufacturing and transportation to medicine and military applications. The US, Russia and China have all noted that dominance in this field of technology will be an essential ingredient to holding global primacy in the near future.

What resembles a sort of arms race has emerged between prominent nations around the globe. Perhaps in an effort to provide the US with an edge, or perhaps in an effort to mitigate the impact of such an arms race, Google has opened an AI center in China.

CNN in its article, Google is opening an artificial intelligence center in China, would announce:

Despite many of its services being blocked in China, Google has chosen Beijing as the location for its first artificial intelligence research center in Asia.

help China pursue its aim to become the global leader. The facility will employ a team of researchers who will be supported by engineers the company already has in China.

Considering Googles services being banned, blocked and otherwise unwelcomed in China, the question remains as to why exactly Google would seek to aid China in becoming a leader in AI technology Google itself seeks to position itself as a leader in.

This question may have been at least partially answered in a recent AI summit which included Eric Schmidt, executive chairman of Googles parent company, Alphabet Inc.

World Debt Burden has Exceeded $230 Trillion "IndyWatch Feed National"

QUESTION: Mr. Armstrong; I find it interesting how you have pointed out that when it comes to public debt, the USA is actually far better than Europe or many in Asia. You also forecast that debt would begin to rise sharply from mid-2017 going into 2021. Do you have any figures to support that forecast?

ANSWER: Yes of course!. The volume of global debt is rising significantly. According to the Institute of International Finance, total liabilities in the third quarter of 2017 surpassed $230 trillion. This is an increase of 16 trillion compared to the end of 2016. As the interest rates continue to rise, the debt servicing costs are simply going to explode. As a whole, Europe is over 100% of debt to GDP on average compared to the USA at about 73%. Government debt has exceeded $60 trillion.

This entire system is coming undone. The debt servicing is exploding as rates begin to rise. The Sovereign Debt Crisis is very much alive and well.

Climate Change As if it was Supposed to Change "IndyWatch Feed National"

QUESTION: Mr. Armstrong; Your computer has proven it can forecast markets, economies, the rise and fall of governments, war, and now even weather well in advance of anyone else. Is this bitter cold just a taste of what is to come? If so, I definitely think it is time to follow you south before you cant sell a house up here when interest rates also start to rise. Working in a bank, I know all too well as soon as there is any trouble, the lending stops. I suppose that is what you are warning about with your real estate forecasts as well.

ANSWER: Unfortunately, this is the beginning of the decline. It will get worse. We are looking at a progressive period of colder weather for the first 13 years following 2015. There should be some oscillation and if there are any warm winters compared to this one, this will be an extension of the decline at least into 2032 with the more likely target off into 2045-2047. By the time this is finished, you will be willing to taxes to get global warming. The sad part of this whole mess is that the Global Warming crowd, while they are rolling around in their bed of cash rejoicing how much they made on this scam, they have led many people to their death by distracting people from the real fury of nature.

Extreme cold has reached from New England to the Midwest and down to the Carolinas, with temperatures dropping below zero. It has been in the 40s here at night in the Tampa region and it snowed a little in Tallahassee. The fatalities associated with the harsh conditions will continue to rise from drivers sliding off an icy road to the rise in disease. This will be a very dangerous rise in economic declines as well as temperature plummet during the winters ahead. It is so cold, any kind of exposed skin can freeze in a couple of minutes. It was so cold, the attendance for New York Citys Times Sq...

Ukraine & the Next Revolution "IndyWatch Feed National"

QUESTION: Mr. Armstrong; I want to thank you for defending the Ukrainian people in their quest to overthrow the government corruption. You are a great inspiration here in Kiev. What does your model show for the success of our revolution looking ahead?

ANSWER:  There are many in the West who know nothing of Ukraine and simply attribute the revolution to the CIA. I understand the disillusionment in Ukraine about these pretend analysts. They pontificate CIA and ignore that there was a real uprising of the people. Following the breakup of the Soviet Union, Ukraine endured years of corruption, mismanagement, lack of economic growth, currency devaluation, and problems in securing funding from public markets. The corruption became widespread and Yanukovichs sons were engaged in a protection racket preventing people from going into small business.

There is no other evidence of how the Ukrainian people have suffered under political corruption that has not really changed. Yanukovich was removed, but those under him are still in power and just changed their stripes. The CIA supported various politicians, but they were not capable of moving the people to rise up. Recently, the current corrupt politicians did not realize that when the government tried to arrest Mikheil Saakashvili, the ex-Georgian leader-turned Ukrainian opposition politician, the people would rally and rescue him from the police wagon freeing him. The accusations that he plotted to overthrow the government is on par with the corruption. There were those in the USA who made similar accusations about WikiLeaks.

I have a friend who lives close to where Saakashvili lived. He stood on the roof preaching to the people as the police tried to grab him. It was a real spectacle of corruption. They have also accused Saakashvili of accepting funding from an exiled Ukrainian businessman in a bid to seize power, which he denies. Thousands of people even gathered outside the courthouse after an almost-eight-hour hearing where the government tried to use the criminal process to elimi...

Sources: Bolingbrook to investigate the Clintons (Fiction) "IndyWatch Feed National"

Will the Village of Bolingbrook investigate the Clinton family?  Sources with relatives whose friends work at Village Hall say yes:

Sure the FBI is investigating the Clinton Foundation, said one source.  But we know that theyre in league with the Deep State.  Can we really trust any organization tied to them?  So were helping Trump I mean were helping bring the Clintons to justice.

There are many laws the Clintons could have broken, said another source.  Did Bill have an affair while visiting Illinois?  Thats a crime in Illinois.  There are other obscure laws in Illinois that we could get them on.  I mean discover if they violated.  The point is that there are so many crimes that the Clintons could have committed, that we cant expect Congress and the FBI to investigate them all.  It is the patriotic duty of every community to investigate the Clintons.

The sources agree that Mayor Roger Claar asked the village staff to look into Clintons ties to Bolingbrook, no matter insignificant they may seem. Though the Clintons did not make any campaign stops in Bolingbrook, Claar, the sources say, believes that there could be some inappropriate connections between some Bolingbrook residents and the Clintons.

Maybe some residents did more than vote for Clinton.  Maybe they received secret funds from the Clintons and used them to run for local office.  We cant know for sure unless we investigate.

When called, Claar answered the phone and said: He hated me and committed a crime. How is that not a hate crime?  For that matter, how can you say that my support of Donald Trump is not a creed?  A creed is a set of beliefs that guide someones actions.  Google it if you dont believe me!

In the background, a woman said: Actually, I have the Babbler on Line One.  The Herald is on Line Two.

Ill deal with you later, Claar said before hanging up.

Chelsea Clinton laughed after being asked about the alleged investigation. Ill make this quick since the board meeting is about to start.  I dont know who this Mayor Blair is.  Ive never heard of Bowling Illinois, most of the money the Clinton Foundation makes goes towards its programs, the former President is my dad, my mother won the popular vote, I have four degrees, includi...

The founding falsities of postcolonialism "IndyWatch Feed National"

In his discussion with anthropologist Philip Carl Salzman, evolutionary psychologist and YouTuber Gad Saad offers (at 8.48) the following:

By the way, in terms of generative grammar, whenever when I see the word post before anything then that raises a flag that its bullshit. So post = bullshitpostmodernismpostcolonialismpost-structuralism. So, maybe Chomsky can one day weigh in on why the introduction of post implies that we are going to generate nonsense.

As it happens, Chomsky is not a fan of postmodernism: he is too much of a member of the Enlightenment left for that.

I have been less than impressed with my encounters with postcolonialism. It seems to be based on three fundamental errors: the Marx Mistake, the Lenin Error and the Fanon Fallacy.

The Marx Mistake

Marxs conception of the state, so memorably set out in Chapter 1 of The Communist Manifesto (pdf) (1848) held that:

The executive of the modern state is but a committee for managing the common affairs of the whole bourgeoisie.

A useful (if somewhat grammatically challenged) summary-discussion of the Marxist approach to the state is here and a pithy summary is here. At its simplest, the underlying causal structure is that the production technology produces the class structure which produces the state. So that, while there is some scope for independent action by holders of state power, the class structure is prior to, and helps structure, the state.

PNG Chief Justice held up in Enga "IndyWatch Feed Niugini"

Chief Justice Sir Salamo Injia was attacked in the Tsak Valley of Wapenamenda in Enga, according to Enga acting police commander Epenes Nili.
Nili told The National that Sir Salamo was returning from his Angutamanda village to Wapenamenda at midday yesterday under police escort after spending the weekend there, when the party came across a roadblock.
Another source who was with Sir Salamo confirmed the incident.
Nili said the Wapenamenda Police Station commander and his men were in front but were no match for a large group of men in what was obviously a pre-planned attack.
He said two women from Sir Salamos tribe had been accused of killing a leader from the nearby Aluni tribe recently through sanguma (sorcery).
He said his policemen were also attacked.
Nili said Sir Salamos vehicle turned back and was attacked in the process.
He said Sir Salamo returned safely to his village while police came to Wapenamenda, and with reinforcements, went and cleared roadblocks.
Nili said three of the leaders of the roadblocks were arrested but the rest fled.
My instruction to my men is that all the perpetrators must be arrested and put behind bars for attacking the chief justice, he said.
My men will not rest until those perpetrators are behind bars.
Nili said it was very unfortunate that Sir Salamo had become a victim of a sanguma accusation which was becoming prevalent in Enga.
I totally condemn the actions of these lunatics, he said.
They are wild animals who do not have any respect for the chief justice of the nation.
I call upon all local leaders to immediately hand in all those lunatics involved in this roadblock.
The source said the vehicle Sir Salamo was travelling in was badly damaged and he suffered some injuries.
He said roadblocks were set up at four places along the road between Tsak Valley and Wapenamenda specifically to trap the chief justice.
The source said Sir Salamo was safe in the village but badly traumatised by the incident.

Unmasking Malcolm: The Big 5 Policy Failures of 2017 "IndyWatch Feed National"

The myth of the moderate Malcolm Turnbull dies hard, writes Ben Eltham. Will 2018 be any different?

At the end of 2017, it was easy to think of the Turnbull government as a spent force. Given the constant state of crisis that has bedevilled politics for years now, we can be forgiven for thinking that the government is about to fall, or that Turnbull is about to be replaced.

That would be unwise. Politics is rarely predictable, and even if it were, the fact remains that the government is just 18 months into its second term. Turnbull doesnt have to call an election until late 2019. As long as he can hold his government together, Turnbull has plenty of time. The longevity of the Turnbull government is one of the stranger aspects of Australias unsettled political economy.

The Coalition has ruled since September 2013, but really it has been two different governments: Abbott and Turnbull. You need to grasp that fact to understand politics in 2018. We are not in the fifth year of a unified Coalition government. We are 27 months into the Turnbull administration.

Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott (left) and current Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott (left) and current Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

No-one could accuse the Abbott government of lacking a program: its agenda was obvious, as soon as it was elected. Commissions of Audit, massive cuts to health and education, endless culture wars, a jihad against climate science. Tony Abbott and his cabinet certainly stood for something. To their bemusement, it was a something that voters rejected.

Ever since he took office, media coverage (and to a lesser extent, popular understanding) of Malcolm Turnbulls prime ministership has been framed around wishful thinking the desire for a particular sort of prime minister, a prime minister that Turnbull has manifestly failed to be.

The idea of a small-l liberal, moderate, progressive Malcolm Turnbull has died hard in the mediascape, even as it has quickly faded in the imagination. Fawning admirers at Fairfax and the ABC fell over themselves to genuflect in front of a politician that could not help but identify with (the conservatives at News Corporation were a different matter).

Perhaps the paradigm example of the media love-in was when Turnbull ushered Annabel Crabb around the family mansion on Sydney Harbour; but there were plenty of others. When Turnbull announced his ill-fated plo...

Justice Denied: The Government Is Not Going to Save Us "IndyWatch Feed National"

The warlords of history are still kicking our heads in, and no one, not our fathers, not our Gods, is coming to save us.

Journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates,We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled: it will not hear the case of Young v. Borders.

Despite the fact that a 26-year-old man was gunned down by police who banged on the wrong door at 1:30 am, failed to identify themselves as police, and then repeatedly shot and killed the innocent homeowner who answered the door while holding a gun in self-defense, the justices of the high court refused to intervene to address police misconduct.

Although 26-year-old Andrew Scott committed no crime and never fired a single bullet or lifted his firearm against police, only to be gunned down by police who were investigating a speeding incident by engaging in a middle-of-the-night knock and talk in Scotts apartment complex, the Supreme Court refused to balance the scales between justice and injustice.

Despite the fact that police shot and killed nearly 1,000 people nationwide for the third year in a row (many of whom were unarmed, mentally ill, minors or were shot merely because militarized police who were armed to the hilt feared for their safety), the Supreme Court will not act to right the wrongs being meted out by the American police state.

Although knock-and-talk policing has become a thinly veiled, warrantlesslethalexercise by which citizens are coerced and intimidated into talking with heavily armed police who knock on their doors in the middle of the night, the Supreme Court will not make the government play by the rules of the Constitution.

The lesson to be learned: the U.S. Supreme Court will not save us.

No one is coming to save us: not the courts, not the legislatures, and not the president.

According to journalist Michael Harriot:

More people died from police violence in 2017 than the total number of U.S. soldiers killed in action around the globe (21). More people died...

PNG rugby league player Kato Ottio dies at 24 after falling ill at training "IndyWatch Feed Niugini"

Late Kato Ottio
Papua New Guinea rugby league player and NRL hopeful Kato Ottio has died at the age of 24 after suffering "a sudden health issue" in training, English club Widnes Vikings has said.Ottio spent two seasons in the Canberra Raiders system but after failing to crack the NRL squad, signed with Widnes in December.

He was expected to travel to England next week to get ready for the start of the new Super League season in February.

The Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) said Ottio passed away at Port Moresby's Pacific International Hospital at 2am this morning (local time).

PNGRFL chairman Sandis Tsaka said details of the death would be released later.

He said Ottio's body was taken to his home and would be transferred to a funeral home this morning.

The centre was part of the PNG side that lost to England in November's World Cup quarter-finals.

He was the NSWRL's leading tryscorer in 2016 while playing for Raiders feeder club the Mounties.

James Rule, chief executive officer of Widnes Vikings, said Ottio was an "incredibly talented player, with a bright future ahead of him in rugby league".

"This news is all the more tragic, because Kato was due to travel to the UK this week to fulfil his dream of playing first-grade rugby league," he told the team's official website.

"We had been in regular contact with Kato and were excited to welcome a bright, excited and passionate young man, who had genuine potential for the future.

"Widnes Vikings will of course be looking to celebrate Kato's life and pay our sincere respects to someone who we believe would have become a hero at our club."

UN group meets to discuss ISDS reform "IndyWatch Feed National"

January 9, 2018: A working group of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) recently held talks to discuss current concerns about the investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) scheme, and possible reforms. UNICTRAL is one of the two bodies which provides panels of investment law arbitrators for ISDS disputes.

According to IAReporter, based on the transcript of the proceedings, the main concerns raised by government delegations were the cost and lengthy duration of ISDS disputes, the issue of corporations failing to pay costs if awarded against them, frivolous claims by investors, inconsistent rulings and lack of transparency. Concerns were also raised about the independence and impartiality of arbitrators.

These are all issues raised by AFTINET and other civil society groups which have led some governments and the ALP, Greens and Nick Xenophon Team to oppose the inclusion of ISDS in trade agreements.

One of the biggest issues identified by some delegations was the lack of consistency in the current ISDS system. Australia, Canada and the E.U. all noted that government lawyers have had trouble interpreting treaties, and Australia admitted that in terms of providing advice internally to government on new policy initiatives it can be challenging to work out where a tribunal might come out on a particular issue.

Broadly, there were three different positions taken by delegates on the need for reform.

Some like Brazil said there was no need for investor-initiated disputes at all, and that disputes could be dealt with by government-to-government disputes processes which are part of all trade agreements.

Others including the U.S., Chile, Mexico, Russia and Japan cast doubt on the severity of problems, and argued that states can use various bilateral tools to alleviate any problems. The U.S. was joined by Russia, Korea and Israel in arguing that the non-uniform arbitration system was a positive thing, as it allowed regional specificities to be considered.

Other delegations like the E.U., Canada, Mauritius and Argentina called for multilateral solutions (such as a permanent court and an appellate mechanism). The E.U. argued that the question of consistency still remains a problem, and suggested that holistic improvements could be made to the treaty system.

There was also a focus by some on n...

The real reason Iranian protestors took to the streets: Govt's new budget, Trump's meddling in Iran's economy "IndyWatch Feed National"

But almost everyone I spoke to gave me the same answer: We don't know. We haven't been able to piece it together yet. We are all confused. But one person had quickly managed to put together the Persian puzzle: Donald Trump. Although it took him days to figure out what was going on in Charlottesville, Iran was a piece of cake for America's most unpresidential president. Since then, he has shot off half a dozen or so tweets purporting to support the protesters. In reality, however, the tweets seem more aimed at fanning the flames than aiding the demonstrators. There is no evidence that the protesters in Iran are taking their cues from Trump - or even paying attention to him. Unlike the 2009 protests, when some of the demonstrators called on Barack Obama to speak out against the Iranian government's brutal crackdown on peaceful protesters, no chants have been heard in Iran calling on Trump to do or say anything at all. Nor has any evidence emerged to substantiate the accusation that the protests were orchestrated from abroad. In the eyes of most Iranians, Trump has shown nothing but animosity toward the Iranian people since he took office.

Coal protesters block rail line near Bowen "IndyWatch Feed National"

Two protesters from Front Line Action on Coal are currently blocking Aurizons coal railway near Bowen, calling on the Queensland Government to rule out funding for Aurizon.

They have prevented any coal trains getting to Adanis Abbot Point coal terminal by locking their arms inside a steel barrel filled with concrete on the train tracks since 7:15am today.

The Queensland Labor government is currently considering rail operator Aurizons bid for a NAIF loan, which would open the floodgates for new coalmines in the Galilee Basin.

Lilli Barto, a physics student, is currently locked onto the concrete barrel near Mt Buckley Rd, 20 minutes south-west of Bowen.

State Labor said during the election campaign that they would veto any NAIF loan that would enable Adanis dirty coal project, she said.

Funding Aurizon would be a back-door route to allow Adani to build the biggest coal mine in the southern hemisphere.

Natan Shlomo, a youth worker, is also attached to the barrel on the railway.

Coal is fuelling catastrophic climate change. We stand against the damage this would cause in the Galilee basin, he said.

If Labor continue to turn a blind eye to the devastating cost of coal mining they are complicit.

This comes as part of an ongoing campaign against the controversial Adani Carmichael mine, following on from last week when activists stopped a coal train heading for Adanis coal port. The group is committed to sustained action against the Adani project.

North Coast gay couple wed on first legal day "IndyWatch Feed National"

A North Coast gay couple are among the first in Australia to tie the knot on the first official day of marriage equality in Australia, celebrating the result of a hard-fought campaign.

Athletes Craig Burns and Luke Sullivan got married at Tweed Heads overnight, timing their proceedings so the marriage would become official minutes after midnight.

The pair first met three years ago and said they fell in love straight away before Craig popped the question at Byron Bay in March.

Its a very surreal feeling, Craig told AAP in the lead-up to the event.

Same-sex marriage legislation cleared parliament on December 7, nearly a month after it was revealed 61.6 per cent of participants in a voluntary postal survey backed the change.

Amid scenes of jubilation same-sex couples across Australia were quick to lodge formal intentions to wed and while some were granted exemptions to the four-week waiting period, today is the first official day ceremonies can take place.

In Newcastle, 32-year-old Rebecca Hickson will marry her partner of nine years Sarah Turnbull, 34.

The pair said they wanted to be part of history and planned to also be one of the first couples to tie the knot in a ceremony from 8am.

Weve already had our big hoo-ha ceremony three years ago but now we get to declare our love for each other again and have it recognised as a real union, Rebecca told AAP.

She described the build-up to the postal vote deadline as a horrible time but said the two are now excited to move beyond it.

Melbourne couple Ron Van Houwelingen, 50, and Antony McManus, 53, echoed Ms Hicksons feelings about the postal vote and said no country should have to endure the same horrendous process to legalise gay marriage.

On Tuesday, the long-time activists will also look forward and tie the knot where they first met as performing arts students three decades ago at the former Prahran College of TAFEs David Williamson Theatre.

(ANTIMEDIA Op-ed)  On Sunday evening at the annual Golden Globes award ceremony in Los Angeles, Oprah won hearts and minds with a rousing speech about speaking truth to power and advancing the position of women in society.

It was an objectively powerful oration, and social media was promptly flooded with calls for Oprah to be the countrys next president. The newfound Oprah 2020 campaign drew support not only from NBC News, which eventually deleted a tweet referring to her as our future president, but also famous neoconservative war hawk Bill Kristol, who unleashed a Twitter storm of support for the beloved American icon.

Oprah did rightly speak out against the 2003 Iraq war (though Kristol claims, partially correctly, that she supported regime change), and as an individual, she is a wonderful example of human connection, kindness, and compassion...

KOMPIAM'S FRAUD KING MP "IndyWatch Feed Niugini"

A Member of Parliament is elected to serve his constituents, and is paid handsomely to do it; a minimum of K330,000 a year in take home pay, according to Madang MP Bryan Kramer.

For this princely sum, surely an electorate should expect their member will spend every working hour striving to support their struggles and advance their interests? After all, K330,000 a year is 45 times the national minimum wage and more money than most people could even dream of earning.

If an MP is given the added honour of serving as a Minister of State his take home pay is increased, to reflect the added duties and responsibilities, to a cool K546,000 per year.

After all, said Minister now has not only the weight of responsibility of serving his own constituents, he now has responsibility for a whole government department, hundreds of staff and numerous local, national and international obligations.

No time here, clearly, for personal business interests, nor should there be. After all, that is why a Minister is paid so handsomely, not only to work tirelessly for his constituents, his departmental staff and the Nation, but also to recognise the lost opportunities to pursue his own commercial interests.

So how is it then that a senior government minister, one so burdened by public responsibility and so richly rewarded by hard working members of the public through their taxes, could have the time to register seven new businesses in less than three years?

Especially seven new businesses in sectors as diverse as travel, security, transport, health, real estate and education?

This, it seems, is just what Minister for the Environment, Conservation and Climate Change, John Pundari has been able to do. Starting in February 2014 and continuing through to November 2016, Pundari registered seven new companies.

Solwara 1 Vents a Sources of Riches from the Deep Blue Sea "IndyWatch Feed Niugini"

Source: Joanita Nonwo, EMTV

The interests in mining the deep seas for its riches date as far as the 1960s with research vessels discovering hydrothermal vents that spew out rich minerals from the earths crust. These vents are very rare, being found only where there are active volcanic and tectonic movements under the sea.

Hydrothermal vents in simple, are openings in the earths crust of the ocean floor where extremely high temperatures exits, spewing out chemical water rich with minerals.

Scientists first discovered hydrothermal vents in 1977 while exploring an oceanic spreading ridge near the Galapagos Islands, and to their surprise, found the area to be teeming with very rare marine biodiversity large numbers of organisms that had never been seen before. Flourishing with life in total darkness, toxic chemicals, and extreme water pressure where no life thought to exist.

It was in the 1980s that the ocean floors of Papua New Guinea was included as a potential underwater mining site off the north-eastern waters of PNG, contained highly graded minerals of copper and gold. The project site, Solwara 1 sits on the sea floor at a water depth of about 1600 meters, containing very high grades of copper and gold those that are much higher than those from the land.

Although there were high costs and engineering challenges that faced the possibility of having the first world under-water mine here in PNG then, there were also questions and concerns raised over the terms of operation and the safety of the ocean against pollution and destruction.

Nautilus, the company who will mine the PNG sea floor was granted the Environmental Permit in 2009 with its first mining lease in January 2011.

In a recent radio interview with PNGs Mining Minister, Johnson Tuke, the Minister stated that PNG Government has been open about the project and that Nautilus has released a thorough environmental impact statement.

This government is responsible. The environment context of it has to be taken on board, and proper due diligence has been conducted already, I suppose... Im really not a marine biologist who has got a preview for you but to the layman understanding, and from what I learnt over the years with Nautilus, Nautilus has given us a feasibility study. That is the reason why the licens...

Heres Why Theres No More Free Passes For The Clinton Foundation "IndyWatch Feed National"

A new Department of Justice probe of the email and charity fraud scandals wont end well for Bill or Hillary

By Charles Ortel

Until recently, the Clinton Foundation has been monitored by the IRS, the Department of Justice, and the FBI, and multiple state government authorities that are seeded with persons loyal to either the Clintons or the Obamas.

Every time, the Clinton Foundation got a free pass.

But now it appears key authorities may finally be turning strict attention toward answering tough questions about public filings of Clinton charities inside and outside the United States. When these powerful organizations engage motivated minds, they will wish to concentrate on a few areas that have long gone begging for attention.

The first time the Clinton Foundation was investigated, between 2001 and 2005, then-FBI Director Robert Mueller, then-Deputy Attorney General James Comey, and others could not seem to find obvious and escalating frauds as a supposed presidential library complex in Little Rock, Arkansas, also fought HIV/AIDS internationally from unregistered offices in New York and Massachusetts without ever obtaining required audits of worldwide activities.

Strangely, as the first investigation wound down, evidence in the public domain suggests that the Clinton Foundation also defrauded the National Archivist by making demonstrably false representations in a binding legal agreement.

For example, there is no evidence the IRS provided final approval to the Clinton Foundation to fight HIV/AIDS internationally as a tax-exempt purpose by Nov. 18, 2004, the date the presidential archive was officially donated.

That Nov. 18, 2004, agreement is nowhere to be found today on the Clinton Foundation website and in public filings despite the charitys more than 13 years of widespread solicitation across state and national boundaries using telephones, mail, and the internet.

The next major investigation started in December 2009 when the French government launched a detailed look into UNITAID, a multilateral international organization primarily funded by France that has sent more than $650 million to arms of the Clinton Foundation engaged, at least in theory, in fighting HIV and AIDS.

Reports concerning this investigation, written in French and published in 2010 and 2011, show that French government authorities, like their U.S. counterparts, missed the heart of...

A bright, new dawn? "IndyWatch Feed National"

A string of tweets this afternoon from Matthew Moore of the Times broke the news of the goings-on today at the BBC:
  • NEW: BBC staff told that anyone who has indicated support for Carrie Gracie, or tweeted an opinion about BBC pay, can no longer present any segments on BBC pay.
  • The directive, from new director of news Fran Unsworth, applies to off-air producers as well as on-air presenters.
  • Given that dozens (hundreds?) of BBC women and men have publicly backed Carrie Gracie, this threatens to turn into farce...
  • UPDATE: BBC says that staff have been reminded of existing guidelines that reporters who have expressed public views should not conduct interviews on that subject.
How fascinating! As the Guardian puts it, "the BBC has banned journalists who tweeted support for Carrie Gracie from presenting on-air segments about the gender pay row at the  editors at the BBC moved to enforce its editorial guidelines by stopping journalists reporting on the issue if they have supported Gracie or have been campaigning for pay equality":
A BBC spokesperson confirmed that editorial guidelines were being applied, saying: Where a presenter or reporter has publicly expressed a view on a particular issue they would no longer be perceived as an impartial voice, therefore it is right they do not conduct interviews on that issue. This is in keeping with editorial guidelines.
The BBCs guidelines include a segment about reporting on controversial subjects concerning the broadcast. They say the reporting must remain duly impartial, as well as accurate and fair. The guidelines add: We need to ensure the BBCs impartiality is not brought into question and presenters or reporters are not exposed to potential conflicts of interest.
What an excellent decision! Let's hope this policy is now enforced across the BBC on other issues too (from Brexit to Trump, fr...

Only 10 Seconds Left, Blair "IndyWatch Feed National"

When Blair asked me what we were doing over the Christmas break, the answer was easy: Wrestling.

He had visions of baking honey desserts with mom, riding his bike downtown and playing on his iPod. But of course, he knows time away from school is time for wrestling. And good thing because the Olympic Champ Henry Cejudo made a surprise visit to his practice!

Opportunities are abundant when you sacrifice. But it didnt stop there.

We traveled to downtown Phoenix for a tournament at Arizona State University. He moved from 73 lbs to 84 lbs to compete in a bigger bracket.

A few wins later, he was in the finals!

But his opponent was a bit older, way stronger and much bigger. After the first period, Blair was down 2-0. He gave me that, I-gave-everything-I-had-and-scored-nothing- because-hes-too-damn-big look.

I gave him the Change-your-attitude-change-your-strategy-look.

After the second period, the score was tied 2-2. It was Blairs choice for the third and final period.  He chose to start on his feet.

The first takedown was going to dictate the winner

Everyone, at some point thinks, I gave it everything I had. It happens when we learn, when we exercise, when we competeand thats when we start quitting.

But the people who coach and condition themselves to ignore that voice are the ones who learn that anything is possible when you keep going. Its the harder road, sure.  But you know where quitting gets you, so you have to at least push for progress, no matter how small.

Every New Year, were all making resolutions and goals.

Most are going to quit when they think theyve done all they can.  That will probably be in February.

I know, personally, that the voice of despair is always there. But, I also now that I can ignore it as long as Im making small, even infinitesimal, progress toward a resolution.

In wrestling and life, Blair and I live by the 1% rule.

If you can improve just 1% every match, its a victory. It means youre a better wrestler than you were prior to lacing up.

Thats a win, regardless of the final score.

As a chemist, this is the same motivation that pushed me in the lab. Every product has to yield a positive, measurable result, I insisted.

for example, when I designed The AM-PM Fat Loss package, I wanted to confer users with a cluster of measurable results that would yield health and longevity.

A boost in energy.

A reduction in belly fat.

Aussie flu outbreak worsens as French epidemic of 'exceptional magnitude' threatens UK "IndyWatch Feed National"

The deadly "Aussie flu" outbreak could get worse, as a French epidemic of "exceptional magnitude" threatens to infect the UK. The deadly H3N2 strain is feared to have spread to almost all parts of the UK, following a surge in flu cases over the weekend. Dorchester in Dorset and the City of London were last night the only places where no one has yet reported an "influenza-like illness" - with churches even banning handshakes in an attempt to curb the spread of infection. Some 4.5million people are thought to have been struck down by flu over the past week, according to the online tool FluSurvey.

TUMBY BAY - Kela Kapkora Sil Bolkin has been a consistent and popular contributor to PNG Attitude and the Crocodile Prize for many years.

He also authored a significant book, launched in Canberra in 2013, The Flight of Galkope, a magical combination of Simbu history and myth brought to modern times with a thoughtful discussion about the prodigious Simbu diaspora.

Sil never ceases to surprise with the range of topics he addresses in his journalism. Stylistically, he walks in the footsteps of the great essayists.

His work is informative, topical, funny and quirky and, very importantly, it offers a personal touch. He writes in a style we can call the Simbu School of writing eloquent, realistic, gritty. He has no respect for stultifying political correctness. He won the 2014 Crocodile Prize essay award.

Sil was undertaking post-graduate study at the Australian National University when The Flight of Galkope was launched by Charles Lepani, at the time PNGs high commissioner to Australia.

I flew down from Hervey Bay for the event and found to my dismay that the publisher had lost the entire shipment of books. We were undeterred: the book was launched that day with the single proof copy.

The consignment arrived the following day and, as we were both flying out of Canberra, Sil met me at the airport and presented me with a copy.

Now the essays have begun to appear again. Sil hasnt lost any of his bite and readers can look forward to a steady stream of incisive pieces. Sil Bolkin is a substantial and significant Papua New Guinean writer. Heres one of my favourites.

Russiagate Turns On Its Originators "IndyWatch Feed National"

Russiagate originated in a conspiracy between the military/security complex, the Clinton-controlled Democratic National Committee, and the liberal/progressive/left. The goal of the military/security complex is to protect its out-sized budget and power by preventing President Trump from normalizing relations with Russia. Hillary and the DNC want to explain away their election loss by blaming a Trump/Putin conspiracy to steal the election. The liberal/progressive/left want Trump driven from office.

As the presstitutes are aligned with the military/security complex, Hillary and the DNC, and the liberal/progressive/left, the Russiagate orchestration is a powerful conspiracy against the president of the United States and the deplorables who elected him. Nevertheless, the Russiagate Conspiracy has fallen apart and has now been turned against its originators.

Despite the determination of the CIA and FBI to get Trump, these powerful and unaccountable police state agencies have been unable to present any evidence of the Trump/Putin conspiracy against Hillary. As William Binney, the former high level National Security Agency official who devised the spy program has stated, if there was any evidence of a Trump/Putin conspiracy to steal the US presidential election, the NSA would most certainly have it.

So where is the evidence? Why after one year and a half and a special prosecutor whose assignment is to get Trump has no evidence whatsoever been found of the Trump/Putin conspiracy? The obvious answer is that no such conspiracy ever existed. The only conspiracy is the one against Trump.

This has now become completely apparent. Russiagate originated in a fake Trump dossier invented by Christopher Steele, a former British MI6 intelligence officer. It is not yet clear whether it was the DNC, the CIA, or the FBI who paid Steele for the fake dossier. Perhaps he sold it to all three.

What we do know is that the FBI used what it knew to be a fake dossier to go to the FISA court for a warrant to spy on Trump.

As a consequence both Comey and the FBI, special prosecutor Mueller, and Christopher Steele are in hot water. The Chairman of the US Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Grassley, has instructed the US Attorney General to launch a criminal investigation of Steele for false statements to FBI counterintelligence officials.

You can see where this leads as former FB...

How Anti-Fascists Won the Battles of Berkeley : 2017 in the Bay and Beyond: A Play-by-Play Analysis "IndyWatch Feed National"

Black Bloc in Berkeley, August 27, 2017.

The perilous politics of militant anti-fascism defined 2017 for the anarchist movement in the United States. The story in the Bay Area mirrors that of the country at large. Its a narrative full of tragedies, setbacks, and repression, ultimately concluding with a fragile victory. Yet there was no guarantee it would turn out this way: only a few months ago, it seemed likely we would be starting 2018 amid the nightmare of a rapidly metastasizing fascist street movement. What can anti-fascists around the world learn from what happened in Berkeley? To answer this question, we have to back up and tell the story in full.

Fascists chose Berkeley, California as the center stage for their attempt to get a movement off the ground. The advantage shifted back and forth between fascists and anti-fascists as both sides maneuvered to draw more allies into the fight. Riding on the coattails of Trumps campaign and exploiting the blind spots of liberal free speech politics, fascists gained momentum until anti-fascists were able to use these victories against them, drawing together an unprecedented mobilization. As we begin a new year, anti-fascist networks in the Bay Area are stronger than ever. Participants in anti-fascist struggle enjoy a hard-earned legitimacy in the eyes of many activists and communities targeted by the far right. By contrast, the far-right movement that gained strength throughout 2016 and the first half of 2017 has imploded. For the time being, the popular mobilization they sought to manifest has been thwarted. The events in the Bay Area offer an instructive example of the threat posed by contemporary far-right coalition buildingand how we can defend our communities against it.

2016: A New Era Begins

Clashes escalate outside a Trump Rally in San Jose on June 2, 2016.

The clashes between far-right forces and anti-fascists that gripped Berkeley for much of 2017 were the climax of a sequence of events that began a year earlier. On February 27, 2016, Klansmen in the Southern California city of Anaheim stabbed three anti-racists who were protesting a Ku Klux Klan rally against illegal immigration and Muslims. The rhetoric of the Klan echoed the same vulgar nationalism that the Trump campaign was broadcasting. Under the banner of the alt-right, many white supremacist and fascist groups began to use the campaign as an umbrella under which to mobilize and recruit. They aimed to build an ideologically diverse social movem...

Change Your Story, Change Your Life "IndyWatch Feed National"

Linda George, Contributor
Waking Times

Stuart Wilde said:

Once you accept life without struggling against it, you can see that everything serves you in one way or another. A lousy meal helps you appreciate and remember a good meal.

A defeat strengthens you for the next victory. If you try not to quantify and judge things and accept them as part of your overall experience, you become mature. All of a sudden that power that should have been yours from the beginning is returned to you as a calm individuality a creative stillness that allows you to BE. Acceptance unshackles you from the restraints that youve created for yourself, and it allows you to explore inside your own individuality.

What would it mean, how would it change things, if, this year a new one just begun you, me, anyone listening could take this advice? Acceptance without struggle. And awareness that everything happening that we dont like is actually serving us in some way. It is all in how we choose to use our thoughts. And the life we are creating is made from our thoughts.

Our thoughts seemingly arise out of nowhere, capture our attention, torment us for a while if they are at the negative end of the continuum (and with the brains natural bias toward the negative, they often are) and then, eventually, leave us alone. It feels we are at their mercy. The wisdom and spiritual traditions tell us we need to let go of the egoic mind (the mind that generates thoughts) and find the calm stillness of the Higher Self behind it. Herein lies the answer to our distress. It is said the mind makes a wonderful master but a very poor servant. For most of us, our minds, the monkey mind (or the lower mind in the theosophical tradition) is our master. My proposition is this: can we decide, right now, to turn this around and make 2018 the year of change of mind? From master to servant the minds status can be changed. What would it take?

Acceptance according to Stuart Wilde and others. Acceptance is allowing life to unfold without imposing the egos preferences upon it. Michael Singer wrote the story of his life on this path, entitled, The Surrender Experiment. His realization that the monkey mind with its never-ending chatter...

BCL hits Panguna hurdle: Momis says it needs a social license "IndyWatch Feed Niugini"

Mothers unite against re-opening the Panguna mine

STAFF REPORTER | Radio New Zealand Pacific | Edited

WELLINGTON - The president of the Autonomous Bougainville Government, Dr John Momis, says mining companies must win the trust of landowners if they want to operate the Panguna mine.

Last month, Dr Momis placed an indefinite moratorium on mining at Panguna after landowners opposed the return of miner Bougainville Copper Limited.

The landowners said BCL would not take responsibility for the environmental and social impacts of its previous operation.

BCL ran Panguna until the outbreak of civil war in 1989 in which grievances caused in part by the mine triggered a 10 year conflict that cost an estimated 20,000 lives.

Dr Momis said to avoid further conflict Panguna could only be opened with the landowners' consent.

"Because of our concern that it might ignite another war, we decided, on the recommendation of the Bougainville Mining Council, to impose an indefinite moratorium on mining on Panguna," he said.

"The mine can recommence, but we have to ensure that whichever company gets the license must be acceptable to the people. In other words it must win the social license."

The vast Panguna copper and gold mine once generated nearly half of Papua New Guinea's annual export revenue.

In 2016, mining giant Rio Tinto transferred its controlling stake in BCL to the PNG government and the ABG and later BCL won support from the ABG to return to Panguna.

But opposition to BCL came from the Osikaiyang Landowners Association which said it was time for Bougainville to attract a mining partner that would respect the people and make sure they all benefit.

Australian mining company RTG claimed to have landowner backing last month and its chairman Michael Carrick told RNZ Pacific his company was a better option than BCL.

Dr Momis said it was not clear if an Australian company could provide landowners the same benefits as one partly owned by the ABG.

"That may be so but that is not the view of t...

080118Buka Urban Council awaits funding

The Buka Urban Town Council has temporarily ceased normal operations due to delay in funding.
According to two senior officers, Rayleen Kidoro and Motsie Kiha, the Buka Urban Council is still waiting for their town Cleaning Grant cheque which was printed two months ago at the Finance office but is still with the office of the Chief Secretary for signing.
Ms Kidoro says the Urban Council is a statutory body that has its own payroll and accounting system and currently, the council have not yet received their funding which caters, town cleaning, area management and payroll for its staff.
Because the council has its own payroll system, with no funding available, some employees were laid off from their jobs.
Ms Kidoro says with no funding the council was unable to do normal cleaning up for the past months.
The two officers says that at this time, business houses and residential areas must be responsible in keeping the town clean by disposing their own rubbish in an environmentally safe way.

Staying alive. Unsolicited advice from an old fart "IndyWatch Feed Niugini"

Inspector Hari Metau (aka Phil Fitzpatrick)

TUMBY BAY - Our esteemed master of ceremonies at PNG Attitude turned 73 two days ago. Thats his allotted three score years and ten plus three and hes still racing.

No, really, its amazing isnt it? He doesnt look a day over, umm. Well, lets forget that and just say he is as old as he feels.

Anyway, I thought it might be an opportune time to not only wish him well but to reflect on this business of getting old and maybe offer a bit of unsolicited advice to those yet to experience it.

This is all advice I studiously ignored when I was young, so its not mandatory.

First up. May I suggest its a good idea to look after your health, right from the get go. Everything else depends on this simple fact. By this I mean both your physical and mental health.

Dont ingest, inhale or inject stuff thats not good for you. Junk food, booze, cigarettes, buai and drugs may sound like fun at the time but believe me they will eventually catch up with you with a vengeance.

Obesity induced diabetes and joint problems, shot livers, lung cancer and emphysema all hurt and are a bugger to handle when you get old.

Look after your teeth too. Stay off the sugar. You know what they say, if you dont eat you dont crap and if you dont crap you die. Eating becomes really problematic when all your teeth have rotted away and fallen out. Who wants to spend their dotage living on baby food or mashed kaukau?

Keep your brain ticking over. Read books, stay away from the couch in front of the idiot box. Its amazing how a fully functioning brain in your old age will ease the burden. A healthy brain in an old body isnt perfect but it sure beats dementia.

Listen to your elders, especially your parents, when they reminisce and try to tell you about the good old days. One day you are going to sit down and wonder who you are, where you came from, where you are going and why you act the way you do.

Believe me, its inevitable if you are half smart. Its a human need that usually...

How stress can make you pile on the pounds "IndyWatch Feed National"

Are you stressed out? Is it hard for you to lose weight? Is there excess fat hanging around in your belly area? If you answered yes to those questions, exploring the relationship between those problems is crucial to your health and well-being. And even if you didn't answer yes to all three questions, it is important to understand how stress can harm your body. That's because your body's main stress hormone - cortisol - can rise to damaging levels when you experience stress. Cortisol (a steroid hormone) helps fuel the fight-or-flight response - the psychological loop that fires you up to fight or run for your life when facing danger. Think of it as your body's built-in alarm system. When you are faced with immediate danger, increases in cortisol help you respond. The hormone works with certain parts of your brain to control your mood, motivation, and fear.

Study On Sapiosexuality Suggests (For Some) Intelligence Is Sexy "IndyWatch Feed National"

The study suggests that 1 to 8 percent of people are sexually stimulated by intelligence!

What turns you on? Is it a beautiful set of eyes, a strong physique or someones ability to make you laugh? According to a new study intelligence is a strong turn on for a small group of people called sapiosexuals.

The new study published in Science Direct supports the idea that some people are sexually attracted to the intellect of someone else.

The study from the University of Western Australia observed 383 students. They filled out a questionnaire which included questions on intelligence, and if it was a train they found sexually stimulating. There was also other questions on other areas of love and sexuality so as not to just focus on intelligence as a quality.

Flaunting British Neo-Imperialism in Asia-Pacific "IndyWatch Feed National"

For over a century, the British Empire exerted control over Asia-Pacific, outright colonising India, Burma, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia while influencing and encroaching upon greater China, Siam and beyond.

It exploited the people and natural resources of the region, fuelled conflict as it waged war with rival European powers seeking to carve out their own colonies in Asia and left an enduring impact on the region, including ethnic and territorial feuds still unfolding today, e.g. the Rohingya crisis in present-day Myanmar.

Rather than make restitution for its decades of war, conquest and exploitation, the United Kingdom today eagerly seeks to reassert itself in the region alongside the United States who has also spent over a century in the region pursuing what US policymakers openly admit is American primacy.

The Diplomat, a US-European geopolitical publication focused on Asia-Pacific, described this development in its article, The British Are Coming (to Asia).

The article featured a single image, that of the HMS Queen Elizabeth, one of the UKs newest warships and its largest. It is one of two colossal warships UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson recently pledged to send across the globe to aid Washington in its growing confrontation with Beijing.

The author, US Air Force Major John Wright currently serving as Japan Country Director, International Affairs, Headquarters Pacific Air Forces, Honolulu, Hawaii, attempts to construct a positive argument for the UKs involvement thousands of miles from its own shores.

The article admits that the US has few capable allies in the region willing to comply with mutual defence needs beyond their own territory. It admits that the US has increasingly looked beyond Asia for partners. The UK then, is about as beyond Asia as any potential partner could be.

The article notes that the UK has already deployed warplanes to Japan in addition to the aforementioned future deployment of British warships to the region. It also s...

Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation? Curtailed attention spans, more isoaltion, depression and suicide among young iPhone users is alarming researchers "IndyWatch Feed National"

More comfortable online than out partying, post-Millennials are safer, physically, than adolescents have ever been. But theyre on the brink of a mental-health crisis.

One day last summer, around noon, I called Athena, a 13-year-old who lives in Houston, Texas. She answered her phoneshes had an iPhone since she was 11sounding as if shed just woken up. We chatted about her favorite songs and TV shows, and I asked her what she likes to do with her friends. We go to the mall, she said. Do your parents drop you off?, I asked, recalling my own middle-school days, in the 1980s, when Id enjoy a few parent-free hours shopping with my friends. NoI go with my family, she replied. Well go with my mom and brothers and walk a little behind them. I just have to tell my mom where were going. I have to check in every hour or every 30 minutes.

Image may contain: 5 people, people sitting

Those mall trips are infrequentabout once a month. More often, Athena and her friends spend time together on their phones, unchaperoned. Unlike the teens of my generation, who might have spent an evening tying up the family landline with gossip, they talk on Snapchat, the smartphone app that allows users to send pictures and videos that quickly disappear. They make sure to keep up their Snapstreaks, which show how many days in a row they have Snapchatted with each other. Sometimes they save screenshots of particularly ridiculous pictures of friends. Its good blackmail, Athena said. (Because shes a minor, Im not using her real name.) She told me shed spent most of the summer hanging out alone in her room with her phone. Thats just the way her generation is, she said. We didnt have a choice to know any life without iPads or iPhones. I think we like our phones more than we like actual people.

Bei dem Meltdown-Bug ist mir gerade was aufgefallen, ... "IndyWatch Feed National"

Was wre der Effekt gewesen?

Block me.

Dont let me enter Israel.

I am a Jew. Three dozen of my relatives died in the Holocaust. My father, before he fled the Nazis, was an active member of Zionist youth organizations. By my understanding of what used to be Israels right of return, I was under the impression that I had a standing invitation to visit or even move to Israel whenever I chose.

But apparently, the ideas and ideals underlying both that right of return and the State of Israel itself are undergoing a reconsideration.

The vote by the Knesset last March to ban the entry of those involved in boycotts of Israel and the action this week by the Strategic Affairs Ministry to blacklist the leaders of 20 foreign organizations that are seen to support such boycotts suggest that in fact, the basic rights and values underlying democracy itself are being repealed in the country.

I know those rights did not exist for millions of Palestinians. I have throughout my adult life been deeply troubled by that fact. The Palestinians fully deserve a state of their own and candidly, having such a state is not only their right and what is right, it is what is in the best interest of the security of Israel.

But I have rationalized maintaining my support for the State of Israel based on a few assessments.

First, the creation of Israel was in my mind, just and necessitated by history. Next, my sense was that the issue of the rights of the Palestinians would be fairly resolved over time via negotiation that h...

Thousands of flying foxes killed by record-breaking heatwave near Sydney, Australia "IndyWatch Feed National"

As record breaking heat swept across Western Sydney on Sunday, it took with it 'thousands' of bats who melted in the sweltering conditions. A critical portion of Campbelltown's flying fox colony died from the heat, as surging temperatures left many dead on the ground and still suspended among the trees. Heartbreaking photos of the death toll were shared online by volunteer groups Wires and Help Save the Wildlife and Bushlands, who tried desperately to save as many lives as they could. As parts of the state became the hottest place on earth Sunday, rescuers from North Western Sydney Wires worked tirelessly alongside Sydney Wildlife volunteers. But unfortunately for hundreds - potentially thousands - of bats, their help came a little too late.

Heres How Stress Could Be Making You Fat "IndyWatch Feed National"

stress fat making cortisol

By Lisa Egan

Are you stressed out? Is it hard for you to lose weight? Is there excess fat hanging around in your belly area?

If you answered yes to those questions, exploring the relationship between those problems is crucial to your health and well-being.

And even if you didnt answer yes to all three questions, it is important to understand how stress can harm your body.

Thats because your bodys main stress hormone  cortisol  can rise to damaging levels when you experience stress.

Cortisol (a steroid hormone) helps fuel the fight-or-flight response  the psychological loop that fires you up to fight or run for your life when facing danger.

Think of it as your bodys built-in alarm system. When you are faced with immediate danger, increases in cortisol help you respond. The hormone works with certain parts of your brain to control your mood, motivation, and fear.

Cortisol also handles other important bodily tasks, explains WebMD.

  • Manages how your body uses carbohydrates, fats, and proteins
  • Keeps inflammation down
  • Regulates your blood pressure
  • Increases your blood sugar (glucose)
  • Controls your sleep...

NUMSA: S. African Union Confronts New Forms Of Apartheid Through Class Struggle "IndyWatch Feed National"

Ill answer your question first and then Ill give some context. Our view of the current South African government is we have taken a very oppositionist perspective, we are opposed to the ANC -- African National Congress, ruling party in South Africa -- -led government. Up until 2013 NUMSA was an active member and an alliance partner and supporter of the ANC. This was because in the days of the liberation movement when we were still fighting the apartheid regime, all of the various formations, the trade unions, the NGOs and the popular community struggles which were all fighting against apartheid all came together in an alliance. So if you were an ANC member you were automatically a supporter of all of the trade union federations, of COSATU --Congress of South African Trade Unions -- for example.

Deutsche Bank: A Global Bank for Oligarchs American and Russian, Part 1 "IndyWatch Feed National"

Editors Note: We publish this lengthy, in-depth, technical piece by a former IRS investigator, knowing it raises more questions than it provides answers. But we believe that is a very useful service, particularly in relation to a complex topic of considerable public import one that may be a key component for special counsel Robert Muellers ongoing Trump-Russia investigation. We hope in the coming weeks to explore many of these questions in greater depth. And we welcome reader comments.

President Donald J. Trump claims he has the absolute right to do what I want to do with the Justice Department. This chilling assertion invites speculation about just what the president has in mind. For clues to what may surface when investigators dig deeper, consider the pending prosecution of banking giant Deutsche Bank over money laundering activities involving Russia.

Recent media reports confirm that Deutsche Bank has been subpoenaed for records in relation to the ongoing Russia collusion investigation. This development immediately raises questions: Chiefly, what did a certain bankrupt but ambitious American real estate developer have in common with predatory Russian oligarchs who had been plundering their own countrys industry and generating vast currency flows out of their homeland since the 1990s?

Indeed, Deutsche Bank is a common thread in numerous probes of questionable financial activities including tax evasion and money laundering with ties to multiple oligarchs and their businesses in the US and abroad. So far the bank itself has suffered minimal consequences.

In all the flurry of media attention to the Russia collusion story, little attention has been paid to the Department of Justices (DOJ) criminal investigation of Deutsche Bank in Manhattan.

What are the ramifications for Deutsche of this pote...

Yama asks for spotlight on Yali's eligibility "IndyWatch Feed Niugini"

Issues relating to the eligibility of former Madang Governor, James Yali, contesting the 2017 National Election, while being convicted of rape will be interpreted by the Supreme Court in Waigani.

The case was adjourned to January 26, after the lawyer of incumbent governor Peter Yama was not present in court last week, to persue the case.

Retired PNG Defence Force Commander, Brigadier General Jerry Singirok and Mr Yali are challenging the election win of Mr Yama.

However, Mr Yama is asking the high court to interpret first, if there are breaches in the Constitution when Yali was allowed by the Electoral Commission to contest the governor's seat when he was a convict.

The court of disputed returns Judge Administrator, Collin Makail says, the case is the first of its kind, and he's interested in Yama's reasons for asking the National Court to refer the case to the Supreme Court for Constitutional interpretation.

Bloke breaks up Roo-Fight in the Ozziest Way Possible "IndyWatch Feed Qld"

Kangaroos.  Am I the only one who thinks they look a bit like the offspring you might expect if a t-rex f***ed a deer?  Seriously, swap a deers front legs for some t-rex arms, give it a satchel and an awesome tail, colour in its little white blotches and hey presto, Kangasaurus Rex!  Whatever though, thats besides the point.  These Ozzy icons love to fight and that leads us to todays video

In it, youll witness two kangaroos behaving like a couple of blokes in a pub whove both got eyes for the same sheila.  One minute theyre having a bloody good time, the next theyre debating whos gonna play wing-man and whos gonna go home with her.  The minute after that theyre punching on.

F***ing hit me, ya pussy. Credit: Viralhog

Sh**!  That escalated quickly.  These blokes are feisty.  In its own way, its funny that these bipedal deer with t-rex arms like to box.  Their little arms arent exactly made for haymakers and uppercuts but then, I guess thats why theyve got legs like cannons.

Apparently, this video was filmed somewhere on the Gold Coast in Queensland and whats special about it isnt the kangaroo stouche or the marsupial fracas, its the special way that the fight is broken up.  Suffice to say its more Ozzy than a dingo coating your baby in vegemite, throwing it next to the shrimp on the barby and downing it with a Castlemaine lager.

Reading 1 1 SM 1:9-20

Hannah rose after a meal at Shiloh,
and presented herself before the LORD;
at the time, Eli the priest was sitting on a chair
near the doorpost of the LORDs temple.
In her bitterness she prayed to the LORD, weeping copiously,
and she made a vow, promising: O LORD of hosts,
if you look with pity on the misery of your handmaid,
if you remember me and do not forget me,
if you give your handmaid a male child,
I will give him to the LORD for as long as he lives;
neither wine nor liquor shall he drink,
and no razor shall ever touch his head.
As she remained long at prayer before the LORD,
Eli watched her mouth, for Hannah was praying silently;
though her lips were moving, her voice could not be heard.
Eli, thinking her drunk, said to her,
How long will you make a drunken show of yourself?
Sober up from your wine!
It isnt that, my lord, Hannah answered.
I am an unhappy woman.
I have had neither wine nor liquor;
I was only pouring out my troubles to the LORD.
Do not think your handmaid a neer-do-well;
my prayer has been prompted by my deep sorrow and misery.
Eli said, Go in peace,
and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him.
She replied, Think kindly of your maidservant, and left.
She went to her quarters, ate and drank with her husband,
and no longer appeared downcast.
Early the next morning they worshiped before the LORD,
and then returned to their home in....

New Possibilities for U.S. Philippines Ties Under Trumps National Security Strategy "IndyWatch Feed National"

MANILA, Philippines  US President Donald Trumps National Security Strategy, despite being consistent with his America First policy, offers opportunities to enhance US-Philippines alliance, an analyst said.

Last December, Trump unveiled a new NSS, which is organized into four pillars protect the homeland, promote American prosperity, preserve peace through strength and advance American influence.

Under the third pillar, the US seeks to rebuild its military strength to protect their diplomatic, information, military and economic interests.

We will ensure the balance of power remains in Americas favor in key regions of the world: the Indo-Pacific, Europe, and the Middle East, the White House fact sheet read.

RELATED: Trump to unveil America First national security strategy

In a commentary published by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, National Defense College of the Philippines senior defense research officer Christian Vicedo said that Washintons security interest and priorities in the Indo-Pacific would have an impact on the US-Philippines alliance.

Chinas artificial islands in the South China Sea, North Koreas nuclear threat and the rise of terrorism and radical extremism are the three regional security issues mentioned in the NSS.

Vicedo noted that addressing the three regional concerns would entail US security commitment to allies and partners in the region.

As a result, while Trumps NSS reiterates transactional principles of economic reciprocity and burden-sharing in confronting common threats, the possibility of a diminishing US security commitment to the Philippines seems unlikely, Vicedo said.

The new security strategy promotes increased cooperation among the...

Goroka BSP bank robbed "IndyWatch Feed Niugini"

Goroka BSP Bank robbed. Photo by PNG Today
The Goroka Bank South Pacific (BSP) Branch was robbed this morning by an armed gang who were dressed in Police uniform.

The perpetrators left with K567,000 in cash. During their getaway they knocked down the gate of the bank and bumped one security guard.
They were pursued and are currently hiding in the bush.

The money that was stolen belonged to Shana Trading, a local Chinese owned establishment.

It is believed that there were five robbers made up of three gunmen, one driver and possibly another member of the group seated on the passenger side of the Blue ten- seater Toyota Land Cruiser used in the robbery.

The robbers drove into the corporate clients side of the bank and waited for the cash transfer to happen. Once the transfer was taking place, they forcefully took the cash and then drove at full speed on to the main road, knocking down a gate of the bank and bumping a security guard.

They left the Land Cruiser at a nearby settlement and used taxi which took them towards Kama on the road leading to Behute CIS. It is believed that the taxi then dropped them off somewhere along the side of the road where they then made their way into the bush.

Provincial Police Commander of Eastern Highlands Province Alex Ndrassel says that currently the police are searching for the taxi used in the getaway and are searching the bush where the robbers may be hiding.

No one else other than the security that was hit by the getaway car was injured during the robbery.

Its Unlikely That Antidepressants Have a True Effect on Depression "IndyWatch Feed Niugini"

Almost all placebo-controlled drug trials in psychiatry are flawed due to their cold turkey design.1 Patients who are already in treatment first go through a wash-out period, when everyone is removed from the drug they had been on, and then randomized to placebo or drug. The wash-out period is too short to avoid abstinence symptoms in the placebo group.2

These abstinence symptoms can be the same as those that define the disorder, e.g. depression in depression trials, and the withdrawal effects can be very pronounced. One third of patients in long-term treatment with sertraline or paroxetine had an increase in their Hamilton score of at least 8 during a 5-8 day period where the drug was substituted with a placebo.3

We currently do systematic reviews of psychiatric drug trials at the Nordic Cochrane Centre where we only include trials in drug-nave patients. The only such trial we found of neuroleptics in patients with psychosis was fraudulent (submitted manuscript).

In depression, trials exist in drug-nave patients who have a chronic disease and developed depression in addition to this. An exemplary trial of this type was published in November 2017 in JAMA.4 It studied 201 patients with chronic kidney disease and depression for 12 weeks. Sertraline had no effect. The QIDS-C16 score changed by 4.1 in the sertraline group and by 4.2 in the placebo group; between-group difference, 0.1 (95% confidence interval 1.1 to 1.3; P = 0.82). The authors reported that a difference of 2 points on the QIDS-C16 is equivalent to a difference of 3 points on the Hamilton Rating Scale. The least clinically relevant effect on the Hamilton scale is 5-6.5

The authors hypothesized that the lack of effect of antidepressants  also in other trials in patients with chronic diseases could be due to too low dose or to the presence of comorbidity.

I find both explanations unlikely. Receptor studies have shown that also when low doses a...

According to the Rabaul Volcanic Observatory, Kadovar Island volcano is likely to erupt and if it does, volcanoes on the nearby islands of Ruprup and Biem are also likely follow suit.
Due to the geographical isolation of the islands, evacuation is a difficulty but fortunately two ward councilors from Kadovar and the Ruprup islands took the initiative to organize the evacuation of 591 men, women and children of the Kadovar Island to the Ruprup Island, hence no causalities currently.

All three Islands have an estimated population of 5000 plus but hopefully, the Authorities wont need to evacuate all of them but the planning currently undertaken takes into account the worst case scenario. In the next few days the East Sepik Provincial Government and the National Disaster Office will be getting detail reports from all National Agencies concerned to access the current situation and deal with it in the most orderly and organized manner to assist the victims of this Natural Disaster currently faced.

Currently Police and Defense Force Personnel on ground have been working closely with the Provincial Authorities since day one. A helicopter from the PNGDF Air element has been deployed for reconnaissance of the islands, a PNGDF Patrol boat from Manus will be on standby if there is a need for evacuating a large number of people and a PNGDF Landing Craft will be departing Port Moresby in the next 24 hours with most needed food, water and medical supplies for the islands.

The East Sepik Provincial Government is assuming the worst case scenario and planning and moving things as fast as they can. This includes a complete evacuation of the 5000 people if the 3 volcanic eruption does happen. As per the advice from the Rabaul Volcanic Observatory due to the shallowness of the area and the type of volcano Kadovar is, there is a chance of a Tsunami happening which could endanger the neighboring Isla...

Tongan seasonal worker dies in Queensland, Australia "IndyWatch Feed Niugini"

A Tongan man in Queensland with the government-run Seasonal Worker Program has become the 14th person to die while working on the controversial scheme.

The 35-year-old man had been working on a farm in the Bundaberg region and is believed to have been discovered dead in his accommodation early Thursday morning.

The death comes just weeks after a special investigation by The Courier-Mail revealed 13 workers had died on the Seasonal Worker Program, with extreme neglect allegedly contributing to a number of deaths and serious injuries.

A Queensland Police spokesman said officers were called to the property shortly before 7am on Thursday.

He said that at this stage the death was non-suspicious, and that an autopsy would be performed to identify the cause of death.

The Tongan community will hold a memorial service in Bundaberg.

Designed to alleviate labour shortages on Australian farms and provide foreign aid for Pacific nations, the Seasonal Worker Program began as a pilot in 2009.

There have been 13 deaths since the program became official in 2012, at least eight of them in Queensland.

A Workplace Health and Safety spokesman said the office was aware of the death and inquiries were being made.

A spokesman for the Department of Jobs and Small Business which oversees the program said the government was aware of the sad death.

We express our deepest condolences to the workers family and friends and the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga, he said. On (Friday), departmental representatives arrived at the location to meet with the workers colleagues and other affected persons.

There is a Queensland Police investigation currently underway. The department will not provide further details in relation to this participant out of respect for the family and community.

It is the second death of a Pacific Islander on the Seasonal Worker Program in the Bundaberg region.

In May, 22-year-old Sione Vakameilalo Fifita, known as Vaka, was working for a contractor at Childers when he became unwell and later died.

His family claims he was sick for about two weeks before his death, and his workmates reported he was vomiting blood but received no medical assistance until it was too late.

A lawyer for Vakas employer said he had...

DHERST's Online selection for Tertiary Institutions reliable, says Fr Jan Cuzuba "IndyWatch Feed Niugini"

The Grade 12 online selection has proven to be more reliable than the manual selection by revealing that all students scoring grade point average above 2.2 got selected which saw over 12, 000 selected within four minutes.

Department of Higher Education Research Science and Technology (DHERST) Secretary Fr Jan Czuba said in 2016, there were 2293 such students and even 66 with GPA above 3.8 missed out.
The online selection data revealed that 47 per cent of the 25, 848 students applied were selected.
With the inaugural use of the online selection system, a total of 12,234 students have been allocated to a study programme, Fr Jan said.
Online selection data revealed that the system selected 12,234 candidates to 164 programmes within four minutes which 98 per cent of places for school leavers filled with candidates who met the requirement.
It stated that this was done in four steps.
Candidates who selected a programme as a first choice and met entrance criteria were put on the waiting list. Finally, 3140 of them were matched to the programmes of their first choice, Fr Jan said.
Candidates on the waiting list were compared with candidates who selected the programme as a second choice, met criteria and were rejected by their first choice.
Best of both groups were matched to the programme. In this stage, the algorithm added 2302 matches.
There was still some space on the list, best candidates who were rejected in step 1 and 2 and met criteria were allocated to the programme. This added 6553 candidates to programmes. The programme then filled the remaining places with best candidates rejected in step 1, 2 and 3. Only 239 candidates were added at this stage.

Science Brief #2. Why the heavy rains and hurricanes?

Essay by S. Tom Bond, Resident Farmer & Retired Chemistry Professor, Jane Lew, Lewis County, WV

The U. S. has experienced four hurricane disasters just this past year: Harvey in Texas and Louisiana in August; Irma, a particularly intense hurricane with winds of 185 miles an hour in the Caribbean reached south Florida in early September. Jose hit the East Coast of the U. S in late September. Maria, the most damaging on record in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands occurred in late September. Combined they cost $200B. The Atlantic had 17 named storms in 2017. See storm tracks here.

What is a hurricane? It is a violent storm the size of a tropical cyclone having sustained winds of over 74 miles per hour. There are five categories, defined by wind speed. When they move over land devastation is proportional to wind speed.

What causes a hurricane? The best answer requires a little bit of science. Water vapor is formed when water evaporates. It takes heat to overcome the attraction between water molecules that causes them to stick together to be a liquid. When enough energy is supplied, they can separate and each molecule goes its own way, up into the air. That moist air is lighter and tends to rise. As the reader knows, higher in the atmosphere the temperature goes down. When a mass of humid air reaches an altitude where it is cold enough, the heat is transferred to the air. The warmed air continues to rise, and the water condenses and falls out as rain. This is the source of rain and snow.

A tremendous amount of heat is needed to evaporate water, over five times as much as is needed to warm the water from the freezing point to the boiling point. This is released when it condenses back to water (rain). If a smaller mass of air hits a really cold layer, a thunderstorm results. If a moist area goes up to a cool, but not very cold air mass, rain occurs.

When very humid air over the ocean in a wide area rises to a cold level, it continues to rise as it drops rain. This rising draws up more humid air from below. The warm air spreads out in the upper atmosphere, forming a whirling cloud cover. More and more heat is drawn from the oceans top layer as the system spreads out. Winds rising in the interior of the s...

With Opening of Turkish Border, Georgias Armenians Grow Uneasy "IndyWatch Feed National"

Tbilisi (EAN A few weeks ago, residents of the village of Dadash, on Georgias border with Turkey, blocked the main highway connecting the two countries. Their aim, they said, was to call attention to rampant lawlessness in the area since the opening of the border post with Turkey in 2015.

In particular, they assert that their livestock is being stolen, blaming Turks in neighboring towns.

A member of Georgias parliament, Enzel Mkoyan, visited the village the day after the protest to hear out their grievances. A large majority of area residents is ethnic Armenian.

Residents told him that cameras on the Turkish side showed that the stolen animals had indeed been taken over the border. They also maintained that local authorities have been of little help.

We live on the border and are very worried, one of the villagers, Tsolak Martirosyan said at the meeting, according to an account by local news website Why is the Turkish side equipped with video cameras, and our side isnt? What century do we live in?

The problem is not new, residents complained. A village nearby, Kartsakhi, staged a similar protest in 2015, threatening to obstruct the construction of a new international railway through the area unless the authorities took action to find stolen property.

Instead of just another northern section of flyover country, CEO and cofounder Eric Dayton wanted his home state to be recognized as the northern paradise he holds it to be. Specifically, the North. And judging by Askov Finlaysons growth, as well as how others in Minnesota have embraced the notion, its working. Kobol to question premature declaration of William Powi by Electoral Commission "IndyWatch Feed Niugini"

A candidate who had contested the Southern Highlands Provincial Seat in the 2017 National Election, will be asking the National Court to refer the case to the Supreme Court.

Petitioner Joseph Kobol wants the high court to determine if there are Constitutional breaches when the Electoral Commissioner, Patilias Gamato, had declared incumbent governor, William Powi prematurely before counting was completed.

Mr Kobol will return to the National Court in Waigani on January 26th, where he will argue why this aspect of the case should be given to the Supreme Court to deal with.

The Southern Highlands Regional Seat was the last to be declared a month after the national elections had completed in July.

Mr Kobol is alleging that Commissioner Gamato's premature declaration had led to the destruction of properties in Mendi town and the subsequent killing of two police officers.

Australian Defence Force personnel allowed to get away with crime? "IndyWatch Feed National"

It sure does look like the old saying "crime does not pay" does not hold true when you're a member of the Australian Defence Force.

When it comes to criminal activity, not only does it seem that the 'administration' is above the law, but also its foot soldiers.

When a member of the serf population does not pay unlawfully issued fines by corporations, one can spend over a year in gaol, but when one is a member of an arm of the administration one can commit criminal activity AND get away with it, meaning IF you get caught you may have to pay it back and if you can't pay it back you do not get incarcerated.

Just another policy showing the serfs that the administration is above the law in this penal colony.

On Being a Third-Culture Kid "IndyWatch Feed National"

When I was 14, after spending 10 years growing up in three vastly different countries, I moved back to the place I was born: Australia. I was making this move from Germany, where racism was taboo due to its traumatic history, yet its people were still a proud nation with high nationalistic ideals. Even teenagers could make you feel unwelcome on the basis of where you were from.

After spending years feeling out of place, I was so excited to be returning home. Australia was where my parents were from, my official nationality. That had to mean something.

Starting my first day of school jetlagged, adjusting to the 10-hour time difference, I wasnt prepared for what was in store. My family had gifted me DVD box sets of iconic Australian TV series, and I had been an avid reader of Total Girl magazine for years. I assumed I would be stepping into an episode of The Sleepover Club or Bluewater High. I thought I knew exactly how to fit in.

But there was still so much I didnt know; so much to make me feel different. Judgement is natural in a high school environment, yet it felt like everything I said and did (albeit being completely normal to me) was watched and criticised. Kids werent used to seeing people be different, and I understood that. But was there anywhere I wouldnt feel like an outsider?

Another thing that baffled me was the questions. What kind of music do they listen to where youre from? I was asked. I had moved from a progressive, western country, and pop music was quite universally liked. Did people really think I only listened to German folk music and Oompah-Pah? My classmates were surprised when my interests were the same as theirs, yet judgmental when mine were different.

Moving around a lot also gifts you with an accent as confusing as your sense of identity. Although I thought I sounded exactly the same as everyone else, everyone was constantly mimicking me and pointing out the way I said certain words. Your accent is just so crazy and different!

The stories you can tell become limited as well. People can go on and on about their family holidays to Paris and ski trips to the Alps, but if I was to bring up attending kindergarten in communist Ukraine, suddenly Id be the one bragging. Perhaps it was the inherent social anxiety associated with moving from a cohort of 30 kids to 300 kids, but I found it easier to just keep quiet.

Australia's Internet speed ranking falls yet again! "IndyWatch Feed National"

It seems that Australia's Mutts in Parliament (MPs) really really despise their slave population or are just plain incompetent, in any event they should realistically be removed from their occupying positions.

To be fair on them they factually 'governed' (i.e. restricted) internet speeds for Australia's 'consumers', IF that was their intention to do so.

IF not, then they cannot get right a basic service (telecommunications), making matters worse as it's something that is their very own resource, something that they've had since the 1960's which makes them look like incompetent imbeciles.

Australia's internet speed rating now sits at 55.

Some people may take the piss out of Kazakhstan, but those goat herders can serf the web on the back of a goat quicker than a convict in Collingwood.

Bit of laughing stock ye 'ol business called the 'Australian Government'.

See what wrote about this matter within the headline:

Australia's internet speed ranking falls two places to 55th fastest in the world

Australia has fallen two places on a global ranking of internet speeds to 55 as the National Broadband Network looks to be completed by 2020.

A monthly ranking by the Speedtest Global Index placed Australia at number 55 for fixed broadband speeds in the world for December 2017, with an average download speed of 25.88 Megabits per second (Mbps).

One place above with 25.96 Mbps was Kazakhstan and one place below was the United Arab Emirates with 25.69 Mbps.

In first place was Singapore with a lightning-quick download speed of 161.21 Mbps.

An NBN spokesperson told The Australian that our poor internet speeds should lift once more Australians connect to the network. Approximately three million Australian homes are currently connected and using the NBN.

"This means that the majority of data being captured by these kind of reports are being generated by the five million or so legacy services on slower ADSL services," the spokesman said.

Google's AI Center in China: Poaching Talent "IndyWatch Feed National"

January 8, 2018 (Ulson Gunnar - NEO) - Artificial Intelligence (AI) is already fundamentally changing information technology and stands poised to permeate and transform technology both online and off ranging from manufacturing and transportation to medicine and military applications.

CNN in its article, "Google is opening an artificial intelligence center in China," would announce:
Despite many of its services being blocked in China, Google has chosen Beijing as the location for its first artificial intelligence research center in Asia.
The purpose of the center, according to CNN, citing China's desire to become a global leader in AI technology, will be to: China pursue its aim to become the global leader. The facility will employ a team of researchers who will be supported by engineers the company already has in China.
Considering Google's services being banned, blocked and otherwise unwelcomed in China, the question remains as to why exactly Google would seek to aid China in becoming a leader in AI technology Google itself seeks to position itself as a leader in.

This question may have been at least partially answered in a recent AI summit which included Eric Schmidt, executive chairman of Google's parent company, Alphabet Inc.

Near real-time Yahoo stock quotes in Excel "IndyWatch Feed National"

You may know that Yahoo Finance has for a long time provided near real-time global stock quotes via its website and via a web API service, which many have used as a convenient source for Excel data. There have been lots of VBA implementations and even a direct spreadsheet formula implementation (no VBA).

Unfortunately, the service was abused to the extent that some even purported to sell trading applications based around it (go figure). That resulted in a huge load on Yahoos service leading to it being discontinued last November. Yahoo has also now included some simple obfuscation in its chart data download service (which has since been reverse-engineered, and may as a result be further protected).

Ive written some code to instead get near real-time prices via the Yahoo web charting apps JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) data feed, based on the approach of Andrew MacLean at That approach is a little slow and inefficient for obtaining a single quote, so hopefully it will be less popular than earlier methods and wont generate quite the same issues. At least not straight away

It is implemented via a user-defined function called StockQuote(), which takes the Yahoo ticker code (STOCKCODE.exchangecode). It helps if you know some VBA, but that isnt essential. This thing is for private use only, and of course comes with no warranty whatsoever, expressed or implied. It needs Excel 2010+:

The Cargo Cult of John Frum "IndyWatch Feed National"

The Prime Directive is not just a set of rules; it is a philosophy and a very correct one.  History has proven again and again that whenever mankind interferes with a less-developed civilisation, no matter how well-intentioned that interference may be, the results are invariably disastrous.

Jean-Luc Picard (Star Trek).

On a small island in Vanuatu, local men march back and forth with the letters USA painted on their bare backs. They carry red-tipped bamboo poles across their shoulders like guns, and although they dont wear shoes and their pants are odd colours and frayed, they look serious beneath old flags of the Marine Corps and the state of Georgia.

It is February 15th, the most important day of the year for Tanna: the day that the mythological American G.I. soldier John Frum is prophesised to return, bringing with him refrigerators, chewing gum and other Western products for the devoted. Many of the crowd surrounding the ceremony arent looking at the men, who are normally farmers or small business owners, pretending to be soldiers. Rather, they are transfixed beyond the sparse grass huts and thick green forest to the active volcano, Yasur, which rises above 1000 feet, and is said to contain John Frums spirit.

Vanuatu was once an isolated island chain in the Pacific which had little contact with the outside world. The locals made axe heads from flints and seashells, and drums from the bark of breadfruit trees. They hunted hawks, cockatoos and pigeons with bows and arrows and spears, and were sheltered from the ebbs of flows of inequality that pervasive agriculture, and the resultant social stratification, had brought to other countries. The country was home to many tribes, each with their own rituals, customs, and languages, which had prospered since early migrations, thousands of years ago.

In the early 1900s, after sporadic visits to the island, the British and French landed in great numbers seeking to convert the population of uneducated savages to Christianity. Missionaries flooded the lands by boat, almost immediately creating a provisional government and court system, which illegalised many traditional customs, including dancing, swearing, adultery and polygamy. They banned activities on Sundays and penalised any who fought to keep their indigenous culture alive. A distinct hierarchy was set along race lines: whites ruled and blacks were subjugated, an unjust ranking that was impossible to overcome. The locals were dominated in their own land and thousands were forced into indentured serv...

12 Signs You Are A Natural Mystic "IndyWatch Feed National"

Mystic beings are a lot like crystal children but do have some differences. These people may not be as spiritually guided as those who are of the crystal variety but they are still quite important.

These are the people who are in-between, the ones who are meant to support those crystal children and really build the foundation for their own paths rather than going down one already laid out for them. People of this variety have a specific kind of temperament. They can be a bit confusing but are all the while pretty fantastic. Below you will find a list of signs that point to whether or not you are a natural mystic being.

12 Signs You Are an All Natural Mystic Being:

1. You see things from all perspectives.

You are able to look at things from the perspectives of others. This makes you the best person to go to for advice. Sure, you may favor your own opinion but that doesnt mean you cant see things from the point of view of someone else.

2. You are a rule-breaker but only within reason.

You break rules that need to be broken. When something is set in place just to waste your time or do you harm you will not stand for it. But hey, some rules were meant to be broken now werent they?

3. You believe we all have our own power within.

You know that there is a power inside of you and you will not let anyone take it away. You see the light shining inside everyone you come across and it is magical. The power within is much more than you think, it can work wonders for us all.

4. You know how important growth truly is.

Those who are true mystic beings know that growing is something we never stop doing. They know that we grow in many ways and that we all grow at our own paces. This is something we should all learn to accept whether we are mystic or not.

5. You believe there is something special about every single person you encounter.

You know that we all have something special inside of us. Sure, some people are a bit sour and you cannot see their good side right away but it is there. You believe everyone has good somewhere inside of them.

6. Your intuition is important to you.

Your intuition is something you value big time. No one can sway you to ignore it. You know that when your insides are telling you something you should be listening.

7. You do not accept empty answers.

You are not one to accept answers that lack meaning. A mere yeah or nah is not going to do it for you. When you ask for an explanation you are going to get one.

8. You do not let people walk all over you.......

"There is much asked and only so much I think I can or should answer, and so, in this post I would like to give a few thoughts on what seemed to be the overwhelming question: "WHY?" And here is the best answer I can give: Because. Because sometimes, life is damned unfair. Because sometimes, we lose people we love and it hurts deeply. Because sometimes there aren't really answers to our questions except for what we discover, the meaning we assign them over time. Because acceptance is yet another of life's "here's a side of hurt" lessons and it is never truly acceptance unless it has cost us something to arrive there. Why, you ask? Because, I answer. The appointment was made after Prime Minister Akilisi Phiva submitted his cabinet lineup to the king on Thursday.

It is understood the king was expected to have an audience with the Prime Minister sometime soon.

The Prime Ministers office is expected to officially announce the new cabinet positions this week.

The ministerial appointment comes after Phiva, 76, became Tongas new prime minister on Tuesday 2, accepting reaffirmation to govern from the king after His Majesty dissolved Parliament in August 2017.

Phiva, who won a landslide 14 of the 17 peoples parliamentary seats in a snap election in November following the dissolution, has promised to lead a king, nobility and peoples government dedicated to social justice over the next four years.

New lineup submitted by Phiva

Phiva first announced the new lineup during a private meeting with his Democratic Party in Nukualofa last week before he submitted it to the royal palace office.

A copy of the list of the ministerial lineup was leaked to Kaniva News shortly after the meeting.

Kaniva News sought confirmation of the list from the Minister of Justice before publishing it on Thursday morning. The minister confirmed it and said it has yet to be officially announced because it was being submitted to the king as part of the constitutional process.

The new lineup is as follows:

1.       Samuela Akilisi  Phiva Prime Minister of Tonga; Minister of Defence and Foreign Affairs

2.       Smisi Sika Deputy Prime Minister; Minister of Tourism and Infrastructure

3.       Smisi Fakahau Minister of Agriculture & Fisheries, Forestry and Food

4.       Dr. Phiva Tuionetoa Minister of Finance and National Planning

5.       Penisimani Fifita Minister of Education and Training

6.       Poasi Tei   Minister of Energy, Environment, Information and Climate Change (MEIDEEC)

Minister Basil calls on Papua New Guineans to register SIMs for Safety, Security purposes "IndyWatch Feed Niugini"

Those who have not registered their SIM cards need to do so for the safety and security of all in Papua New Guinea.

Minister for Communications, Information Technology and Energy, Samuel H Basil, said he had endorsed the SIM card registration deadline extension to 23rd January, 2018, requested by the National Information Communications Technology Authority (NICTA) in consultation with the Office of the Prime Minister.

The deadline on SIM card registration on 31st December 2017 was determined two years ago and really should have been driven by relevant authorities and the telecommunications service providers, said Minister Basil.

No one really should be surprised and all should be grateful for the extension.

The ONeill-Abel Government understands the importance of ensuring that telecommunications is maintained both from the perspective of mobile telecommunications service providers and the customers, he added.

Since my appointment as Minister by Prime Minister Peter ONeill, I have been briefed about the SIM card registration exercise, the delays and the implications. I have also been concerned about the importance of cyber security, especially in the context of the hosting of APEC 2018 by Papua New Guinea.

Cybersecurity is about responsible and accountable telecommunications. For example, all motor vehicle owners have to register their vehicles and be licensed to drive their vehicles on the road.  This is for the safety of all and to hold accountable those who are irresponsible and endanger other users.

The Minister said similarly, the SIM card registration exercise is about ensuring that for the safety and security of all; each...

Tools 500,000 years old found in Israel "IndyWatch Feed Niugini"

Israeli archaeologists have announced the discovery of half-million-year-old stone tools that suggest the cognitive capabilities of the hominids who crafted them were much more similar to our own than previously thought.

Dubbed a kind of stone-age Swiss army knife by one of the archaeologists working on the site, many of the objects found were flint hand axes, among other tools.

The carving of these pieces requires a conceptual leap that allowed them to imagine the desired tool before starting to shape it, said Ran Barkai, the head of the Archaeology Department at Tel Aviv University, emphasising that this was the key to the discoverys importance.

The tools were found in the Israeli Arab town of Jaljulia, located at the edge of the coastal plain near the border with the West Bank.

The findings (at Jaljulia) are amazing, both in their state of preservation and in their implications about our understanding of this ancient material culture, the excavations director, Maayan Shemer, added.

Mr Shemer highlighted the tools technological variety, adding that the investigations can aid scientists in their understanding of Homo erectus, a species of extinct hominid that inhabited the area during the Paleolithic Age.

Because the land on which Israel sits is filled with the archaeological remains of numerous different eras, whenever construction is undertaken the land must first be investigated by experts, often leading to discoveries such as the ones in Jaljulia. BBC

Bendigo Banks on Muslims "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

This article was first published two years ago and has been republished due to readers requests

It appears the Mosque will be built at this address after the High Court of Australia threw out an appeal by the Concerned Citizens  group last year: 9 Rowena St, East Bendigo VIC 3550

The Bendigo Bank fiasco all started when a group of Bendigo citizens heard about plans to build a huge new mosque in their city. Knowing that a mosque would bring untold trouble, as they had seen happen in other places where mosques were built, they decided to get together and work out ways to oppose the development application.

Oh piggy bendover bank!

They formed the Concerned Citizens of Bendigo group and opened a bank account to deposit donations they planned to raise from other concerned citizens.

But they soon found out that the Bendigo Bank is in bed with the Muslims. As opposition to the mosque grew the bank took it upon themselves to censor the protestors. The bank closed the Concerned Citizens account, stating that it did not meet the Banks Community Standards. This certainly raised a few eyebrows, because the Bendigo Bank market...

Kikori Delta in PNG set for development "IndyWatch Feed Niugini"

Great plans are ahead to convert the Kikori delta in Papua New Guinea into a free economic zone, and this includes the construction of a 100 room hotel.
Local Member for Kikori and Minister for Community Development Soroi Eoe said in partnership with the PNG Government, the district development authority, investor YuEm Boss Limited and the landowners, they would develop the delta to create the free trade zone, a model that is similar to that in China.
The proposed economic zone would include infrastructure, schools, health facilities, economic growth centres like hotels and accommodation.
Mr Eoe said for too long the people of Kikori have been misusing millions of kina from the Kutubu oil project, the PNG LNG project and timber royalties. The upcoming Papuan LNG would bring more benefits that under his leadership he wanted to see the funds translated into sustainable benefits and investments for the future.
He said similarly the landowners have been missing out on a lot of money from LNG, oil and logging operations.
He said in line with his DDAs plans, he is in support of YuEm Boss Limited to invest in the district including the K15 million, 100 rooms hotel and ecotourism industry to create opportunities and empower the people, a long term investment that would change the landscape of the district.
He said he is in full support of the investment decision by the Kikori sub district resource association led by chairman Peter Keisa Iari and chief executive officer of YuEm Boss Limited Danny Linny.
He said over the next five years they will focus on the free trade economic zone, the development of the deep water port and the construction of the LNG processing facility in the province.
Mr Linny said he wants to include the landowners in all development initiatives in the district, as he wanted them to take ownership and empower them in the long run.
He said a team will visit China and see how similar free trade zones are established and function so that they can duplicate the idea or improve on it.
He said Kikori has the potential to become an important trading zone that would be supported by the governments plans to develop the deep water port, the Gulf Southern Highlands highway connecting all the five highlands provinces, the huge logging projects and the second LNG project.
Mr Linny said building the 100 room hotel is only the beginning of many projects his company wanted to partner with as many landowner groups and governments.

Crrow777 | Censorship, Solar Lies, Hidden Lands, & The Big Construct - The Higherside Chats "IndyWatch Feed National"

On today's episode of The Higherside Chats, old friend Crrow777 joins Greg Carlwood to talk censorship, solar lies, & everything wrong with the Big Construct.

We live in a time where people are questions all aspects of reality, from the narratives we see on the nightly news to the sun, moon, stars and the Earthly environment itself. How can we not when we know the school system we're forced into was crafted with deception rather than a true attempt to cultivate the best and brightest.

We know think tanks and backdoor cabals have steered our culture to their liking for years, we've heard thousands of accounts of strange objects in the skies but have been stonewalled when it comes to answers, and we don't even know how to feed or take care of ourselves on the most basic of levels.

It seems all we can do is observe the holes in the official story while the world around us drinks the proverbial Kool-aid of our consensus reality cult, because it's clear nearly every aspect of time and space has been twisted for control.

But lucky for us we have a light in the darkness with his cameras aimed at the sky, a man working to peel the onion of lies down to it's very core. He's been here plenty of times before making the shortlist of gusts who's appearances exceed what I can count on one hand, the Pappa Bear of the Lunar Wave. My friend and yours. Breaking in the new year, Crrow welcome back to the Higherside.

APEC will boost PNG's Economy "IndyWatch Feed Niugini"

Papua New Guinea Minister for Treasury Charles Abel is confident that the economic prospects for the country will be boosted with a rebound in resource prices and PNG hosting of APEC meetings this year.

Through 2018 and beyond, with the rebound in resource prices, and as we move towards the construction phase of the Papua LNG project, we can be confident, but we must also continue to exercise discipline starting with the delivery of the 2018 Budget.

The 2018 year will be very important for Papua New Guinea as we host more than 15,000 delegates, ministers and leaders from the APEC region.

APEC provides an opportunity to showcase the trade and investment potential of Papua New Guinea.

While also provides our economy with the opportunity to make a positive contribution to regional economic growth and development.

Mr Abel said this when welcoming the 2017 Article IV country report from the International Monetary Fund, that provides analysis of economic governance in the nation, including the initial policy decisions of the new Government.

Referring to the latest IMF country report, Mr Abel said the Government, working through the Department of Treasury, has seen increased engagement with development partners including the IMF who provide important economic advice and support.

The Article IV report is frank in acknowledging the challenges facing the PNG economy, but is predicting improvements in 2018 on the back of a 2.4 per cent growth in GDP, up from 2.2 per cent in 2017, the Deputy Prime Minister said.

The IMF recognises that this outlook does not factor in any of the emerging resource projects such as the Papua LNG, PNG LNG project expansion, Stanley Gas, Wafi Golpu or Frieda River. Press Release

Police investigate McLachlan allegations "IndyWatch Feed National"

Gold Logie winner Craig McLaughlan has been accused of sexual misconduct by former colleagues. (youtube)

Victoria Police have confirmed theyre investigating allegations of sexually inappropriate behaviour by Gold Logie-winning actor Craig McLachlan.

Three cast members of the 2014 run of The Rocky Horror Picture Show have told a Fairfax Media/ABC investigation that McLachlan, 52, inappropriately touched them or exposed himself to them.

McLachlan has described the allegations by Erika Heynatz, Christie Whelan Browne and Angela Scundi as baseless.

They seem to be simple inventions, perhaps made for financial reasons, perhaps to gain notoriety, he was quoted as writing.

These allegations are ALL made up.

But Victoria Police has confirmed its investigating.Detectives from Melbourne SOCIT (Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team) are investigating allegations of sexual offences dating back to 2014, it said in a statement on Monday.

As the investigation is ongoing, it would be inappropriate to make any further comment.

The actor is currently starring in another production of the Rocky Horror Picture Show in Adelaide.

He is also set to star in the return of the popular Doctor Blake Mysteries on Channel Seven later this year, and the network has been contacted for comment.

McLachlan is the latest high-profile man in the entertainment and media industry to be accused following the Harvey Weinstein scandal in the US.

Whelan Browne also appeared in the Channel Ten program The Wrong Girl alongside McLachlan in 2016 and 2017.

She told the ABC she was dismayed when she learned he had been cast but felt she had to continue to have a civil relationship with him for the sake of her career.

She said his behaviour towards her on that program was appropriate.

But she said during Rocky Horror that McLachlan, who played the transvestite Frank N Furter to her Janet, said he indecently assaulted her on stage during a sex scene.

Scundi said McLachlan kissed her passionately onstage even after she had asked that it not be done.

She said when she confronted him about the unwanted kiss, he abused and threatened her.

I said, Dont you kiss me. Dont you do that ever again and he turned. I havent fe...

Call to have equal sharing of benefits from resources owned "IndyWatch Feed Niugini"

Jack Lapauve Jnr. | EMTV | 7 January, 2018

The President of Resource Owners Federation PNG is urging the National Government to be a firm regulator in the Mining, Gas and Oil sector.

Jonathan Paraia said resource owners in the country have been pushed to the side by the Government in many of the projects.

He said if the Government takes centre stage, resource owners around the country will continue their struggle to claim benefits.

According to a report by Mineral Resource Authority, almost more than half of Papua New Guineas income comes from the Oil, Gas and Mining sector [false!].

And with more explorations around the country, there is opportunity to pass the current rate. But the President of the Resource Owners Federation said there is no real benefit for resource owners.

Mr Paraia [sic] the Government must not interfere, but embrace resource owners for equal sharing of benefits.

Mr. Paraia believes benefits of the resources the country boasts about is not equally shared among the key stakeholders.

He said it is time the Government thinks of its people and provides that ownership platform to resource owners.

Port Douglas holiday query "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

Hi all, sorry to ask questions not strictly cairns related but youre my best hope :)

Wondering whether you think this itinerary is doable:

Im travelling with an elderly person who wants to see the rainforest and some islands. I was thinking to fly into cairns, hire a car and drive to the Daintree staying there overnight in a lodge. Drive to port Douglas on day 2 and spend 3 nights there, doing a day trip to a couple islands, and driving back to cairns and flying out on day 5.

Do you think 1 night in Daintree and 3 in port Douglas is better than a 2-2 split? I wondered about adding a night in cairns, but I think moving to three different hotels will be too much for them and would consider coming back just for a cairns only trip.

Id prefer to actually be driven from cairns to Daintree and then to port Douglas so I dont have to hire a car and drive myself, but Im guessing its important to have your own car access to explore nearby places?

Heard amazing things about the Sheraton grand mirage and a bit about the silky oaks lodge, any feedback or alternatives (amazing views, excellent service, access to things to do or see, restaurant on site really important).

Labor, Coalition reject sugary drink tax "IndyWatch Feed National"

Australias peak medical body has accused Australian politicians of looking after lobby groups rather than their citizens after the Coalition and Labor said they wouldnt support a tax on sugary drinks.

The Australian Medical Association wants the government to tackle the nations obesity crisis with a tax and advertising bans.

The proposed sugary beverage tax and ban on advertising junk food to children especially during sporting events are among the AMAs recommendations in its statement on nutrition in 2018.

The AMA says the government needs to put a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages as a priority and deterrence, to force behaviour change and stop people thinking its normal to eat unhealthy, sugar-processed food daily.

AMA president Dr Michael Gannon says the group believes as many as one in five Australians die from conditions related to poor diet, such as cancer, coronary artery disease and stroke.

It was appalling to sometimes see babies drinking from 600ml bottles of soft drink containing 15 to 20 teaspoons of sugar, he said.

Obesity is close to overtaking tobacco as the biggest preventable cause of ill health in the community, it is no exaggeration to say sugar is a killer, he told reporters, saying that fact should outweigh any opposition to the tax.

Governments do need to get tough, they need to realise that theyre there to protect the citizens not there to respond to calls of lobby groups.

We expect resistance from the industry, we will fight the industry on this and it is inevitable over time that the benefits of a taxation on unhealthy foods will become obvious to government.

The Australian Beverages Council, the industrys lobby group, has been fighting criticism of sugary drinks and says there is no evidence a tax will do anything to reduce obesity.

The Coalition insists its taking the required action to tackle the challenge of obesity and wont sweeten to making a deal that taxes sugary beverages.

We do not support a new tax on sugar to address this issue, a spokesman for Health Minister Greg Hunt told AAP on Sunday.

He noted the government had taken action by backing labelling laws for ingredients and nutritional information and supported voluntary measures to restrict food marketing to children.

Federal deputy opposition leader Tanya Plibersek said the federal government should help tackle the obesity epidemic in the country but stopped short of supporting the tax.

Instead, Ms Plibersek suggested prevention strategies to make sure Australians have healthy lifestyles and make healthy choices.

We dont want the next generation of Australians to be a generation where...

You think that's bad, she had another son to King, back in Sydney that was named....Sydney.

1799 - Saw Bass and Flinders bobbing about in the Tom Thumb in and around Tassie and assorted islands, proving that the umbilical cord that once connected Tassie to the mainland was long gone; today they made a return visit to the Furneaux Islands for a cuppa tea on their journey back to Port Jackson.

1803 - Capt. Anthony Fenn Kemp and Lieuts Thomas Hobby and Nicholas Bayly arrested for being involved in "scurrilous attacks" on Gov King.

Dont Let Fire And Fury Normalize Fake But Accurate "IndyWatch Feed National"

Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, Michael Wolffs entertaining new book, is a mix of wishful falsehoods, compelling fictions, and a lot of stuff we already suspected about the White House. Even honest antagonists of Donald Trump can concede as much.

But treating it too seriously not only diminishes the president who does solid work on this front all by himself it diminishes journalism and incentivizes reporters to sensationalize their coverage, which is already a growing problem.

Even before I got my hands on Fire and Fury, the kind of fun book Ive been reading with high levels of skepticism for 20 years, Id run across a contention that I knew to be patently false. According to the author, the late Roger Ailes once suggested that the president-elect make former House speaker John Boehner his chief of staff. Trump, claims Wolff, answered, Whos that?

OMG! Donald Trump doesnt didnt know who John Boehner was in 2016! went the Twitter cry. But I had interviewed Trump in 2013 regarding the tax ceiling fight, long before ever contemplating his presidency, and it was obvious he knew Boehner rather well even if he knew virtually nothing about the debt ceiling.

Since then, reporters (many of them, it should be noted, are critical of Wolff) and others have uncovered plenty of evidence debunking the Boehner story, and numerous other assertions in the book. Not that this discouraged his antagonists. The president is suffering from dementia, they now argue an attack that comports neatly with the new push to overturn the 2016 election on grounds of the presidents mental fitness.

Perhaps he does have dementia. Or perhaps Trump misheard. Or perhaps Trump didnt recognize the pronunciation of the name. Or perhaps the president was mocking the choice of Boehner in the Trumpian style. Or perhaps the story never happened.

Thats the problem with a book of rumor-mongering. You can never know whats true, though people always tend to believe the tidbits that reinforce their worldview. Not that these sorts of tomes are new. Every president has his Kitty Kelley. What is new, though, is the wall-to-wall coverage of the book. Wolff has given outlets a convenient excuse to repeat unverified stories about the Trump administration that they couldnt talk about otherwise. In doing so, some are left to defend books abstract truths.

Blockchain Technology Holds the Answer for the Prescription Drug Crisis "IndyWatch Feed National"

According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), overdose deaths involving prescription opioids were five times higher in 2016 than 1999. In that seventeen year period, over 200,000 Americans have died from opioid-related prescription overdoses. Every day, more than 1,000 patients are treated in emergency rooms and emergency departments for misusing prescription opioids.

One of the main reasons that the prescription drug crisis has gotten so bad is overprescription. One source notes, Painkiller abuse is particularly on the rise in adolescents who mislead prescribing physicians. The problem also exists with elderly patients and other legitimate prescription drug users, who sometimes use their access to opioids to supplement their incomes. The sad truth is that Medicaid patients can receive medications with a street value of up to $20,000 for a total out-of-pocket price less than $5 monthly. With easy access and the ability to make a sizeable profit, its no wonder that prescription drug use is out of control.

Unfortunately, existing methods dont do a good job of dealing with over-prescription. The CDC estimates that the U.S.s total spend on prescription drug abuse is $78.5 billion a year. This includes healthcare costs, productivity losses, addiction treatment, and criminal justice involvement. But regulatory bodies have been unable to prevent overprescribing from happening.

One reason for this is the inadequacy of prescription tracking methods. The current system relies on trustbetween the patient and his or her prescriber, between the prescriber and the pharmacy, and between the pharmacy and the patient. Handwritten, paper-based prescriptions can be easily forged, falsely signed, and altered. Doctors are often unaware that patients have seen multiple physicians in order to receive opioid treatment for the same problem. The entire system is in dire need of an overhaul.

Thankfully, one blockchain startup, BlockMedX, is in process of developing a proprietary platform that could stop the prescription drug crisis dead in its tracks. The platform gets rid of outdated handwritten prescriptions and provides a way for all parties to record an unchangeable history of prescriptions.

Explaining the sorcery killing epidemic are pastors to blame? "IndyWatch Feed Niugini"

Pastors must also stop talking about evil spirits in the form of sanguma, sorcery or witchcraft. Pastors are the main people reinforcing sanguma or sorcery in their belief system.

They should be punished for  spreading false teaching. Christ has already conquered evil; the word must spread that sorcery does not exist.

As Tensions Between North Korea and the US Grow, CDC Intends to Hold Briefing on How Public Can Prepare for Nuclear War "IndyWatch Feed National"

As tensions grow, many believe the worst is to come. The CDC really has scheduled a briefing for later on this month to outline just how the public can prepare for any possible nuclear wars to come.

Most people do not know what they need to do in order to prepare for a nuclear war and being prepared is everything. If you are not prepared you will not last long. Most people dont know what they should or shouldnt do and in regards to fallout lets face it we are never going to be prepared enough.

This briefing will occur on January 16th and the CDCs website states as follows:

While a nuclear detonation is unlikely, it would have devastating results and there would be limited time to take critical protection steps. Despite the fear surrounding such an event, planning and preparation can lessen deaths and illness. For instance, most people dont realize that sheltering in place for at least 24 hours is crucial to saving lives and reducing exposure to radiation. While federal, state, and local agencies will lead the immediate response efforts, public health will play a key role in responding.

This briefing will be presented by people who specialize in radiation studies and if you have been paying attention to President Trumps tweets is something we should have had long ago. In an interview with PBS NewsHours Judy Woodruff, former Vice President Joe Biden said that he agrees with Admiral Mike Mullens statement that the US has literally NEVER been closer to a nuclear exchange with North Korea.

He believes Nuclear War is almost inevitable and that it will be happening sooner rather than later. He claims there is no easy answer as to how to deal with the issues between the US and North Korea and definitely no easy way to relieve tensions.

Biden said as follows in regards to Trumps my button is bigger tweet:

When we engage in activities like lets compare the button, they all for different reasons and different motivations lose confidence in us.

They wonder what the hell were doing. Im worried they then decide theyre going to try separate ways to figure out how to do this.

This cant be done in a way that doesnt have all the players in the game on the same page and the other thing is you draw these lines and you dont respond, you diminish your credibility and its just dangerous....

New method of examining teeth reveals ancient people lived much longer than currently believed "IndyWatch Feed National"

An archaeologist from The Australian National University (ANU) is set to redefine what we know about elderly people in cultures throughout history, and dispel the myth that most people didn't live much past 40 prior to modern medicine. Christine Cave, a PhD Scholar with the ANU School of Archaeology and Anthropology, has developed a new method for determining the age-of-death for skeletal remains based on how worn the teeth are. Using her method, which she developed by analysing the wear on teeth and comparing with living populations of comparable cultures, she examined the skeletal remains of three Anglo-Saxon English cemeteries for people buried between the years 475 and 625. Her research determined that it was not uncommon for people to live to old age. "People sometimes think that in those days if you lived to 40 that was about as good as it got. But that's not true. "For people living traditional lives without modern medicine or markets the most common age of death is about 70, and that is remarkably similar across all different cultures." Ms Cave said the myth has been built up due to deficiencies in the way older people are categorised in archaeological studies.

Extreme cold wave conditions prevailed in most parts of Uttar Pradesh on Saturday. Lack of night shelters and amenities have already led to the death of over 70 homeless and poor people. Phone calls to senior officials, including Director Information Anuj Jha have remained unanswered. Twenty-two deaths have been reported from Poorvanchal; three each in Brij and Bareilly divisions; 11 in Allahabad division and 28 in Bundelkhand region. Two persons - Ram Kishore Rawat, 40, and Mahesh, 35, have died in Barabanki district due to the severe cold. One person died in Harchandpur in Faizabad, an infant in Ambedkarnagar, one in Rae Bareli's Makhdoompur and one in Unchahaar. A government official said that adequate arrangements have been made for bonfires and night shelters, though the ground realities were in stark contrast to these claims.

Writing for a cross cultural readership - some tips "IndyWatch Feed Niugini"

Phil 2015
Phil Fitzpatrick

TUMBY BAY - One of the things I tell aspiring fiction writers is to keep their sentences short and simple and to avoid using big words.

The logic is simple. You have to allow room for a readers imagination to work. If you provide too much detail you take away one of the pleasures of reading - the contribution of the readers mind.

Secondly, if you use big words you can interrupt the flow of the readers thoughts, especially if the words are unfamiliar.

This last point is relevant if you include foreign words and phrases that are not easy to work out from the context of the sentence.

Literary writers who insist upon indulging the Victorian habit of including unexplained French and Latin words and phrases are smartarses trying to show they are sophisticated and well-read.

The same rules apply to non-fiction, especially essays and journalism. Here, however, including unfamiliar words is often unavoidable.

Sometimes acronyms are used instead of full titles. We all know how annoying it is to have to keep back-tracking to remind ourselves what an acronym stands for. Unless they are very common, like PNG for Papua New Guinea, its best to avoid them.

This advice is fairly straightforward and sensible but there are more subtle writers habits worth noting, especially on blogs like PNG Attitude that cut across cultural barriers.

Ive noticed, for instance, that many of the Australian writers are fond of filling their articles or comments with the names and references of authorities on a topic, often drawn from classical sources.

When you read some of these pieces it becomes apparent that the writers are often highly selective, cherry-picking sources to support their argument.

From the perspective of the Australian reader this probably isnt significant but if you consider the perspective of many Papua New Guinean readers you have to realise that it is possible they have never had the advantage of exposure to such sources. For them the references and name-dropping a...

Jeff Sessions Needs to be Fired and Prosecuted for Obstruction of Justice "IndyWatch Feed National"

Everyone who has eyes to see and ears to hear knows that Hillary Clinton should already be in prison. Hillary was able to keep stealing and dealing for as long as she did because of the three corrupt people, namely. former President Obama, former Attorney General Loretta Lynch and fired FBI director, James Comey and whole host of subordinates. However, none of these three are a in a position where they protect the beneficiary of the most corrupt criminal enterprise on the planet, The Clinton Foundation. Then why isnt Hillary Clinton locked up as current President Donald Trump has stated on multiple occasions? The answer to the question is that there is a fourth person who is just as corrupt and willing to commit malfeasance of office in order to keep Hillary Clinton a free woman and that person would be the obstructionist Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

The Collapse of the Russian Collusion Delusion

The case of the Russian collusion case being levied against President Trump has collapsed. In multiple MSM outlets, it has been convincingly demonstrated that the Clinton Foundation and the DNC paid $12 million for the fake Russian Dossier to be created and then used as a fraud against the President and the American people. The dossier was then used to falsely try and implicate President Trump for conspiracy to collaborate with the Russians designed to defraud the 2016 general election campaign.

Clintons actions even led to the use of a British spy who fabricated evidence against the President. In the process, elections laws were broken and the President was falsely smeared. This dossier became the reason for the special counsel, Congressional hearings and wall-to-wall news media false allegations against President Trump. This dossier was even used for FISA warrants for eavesdropping on the President and his staff...

Surfer bitten on foot by shark off Gracetown, Western Australia "IndyWatch Feed National"

A man surfing off South Point in Gracetown suffered bite wounds to his foot when he was injured by a suspected wobbegong shark on Friday. The surfer, known only as Justin, was pulled from the water and initially treated on shore by an off-duty nurse before he was transported to Margaret River Hospital about 6pm. Andy Gradisen was surfing alongside the man when the unknown species of shark struck and said the attack took "a small chunk" out of his mate's foot. "We were out the back of South Point and I heard Justin flapping about in the water," Mr Gradisen said. "He put his foot up and he was bleeding quite badly.

Peter Beatties gender bender games "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

The Commonwealth Games to be held on the Gold Coast in April will be known as the gender bender games after Games Chairman Peter Beattie instructed the 15,000 volunteer helpers not to refer to spectators as Mr or Mrs; Girl or Boy; Maid or Maiden; Ladies or Gentlemen, policeman or policewoman, ad nauseam.

Saying see you later to a blind man or woman was simply unacceptable and could confuse the poor person, Mr Beattie said.

Policeman is just not on lest a request to a gender neutral police person be taken the wrong way.
