AUKUS submarine deal: Impacts on Australias relations and local communities "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is set to unveil the details of a trilateral agreement made with US President Joe Biden and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, about Australia acquiring nuclear submarines.

Currently, Australia is in the market for at least eight nuclear-powered submarines, at a cost of $100 billion the largest defense acquisition in the nations history.

However, groups including the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) are concerned this project undermines environmental protection efforts and increases the risk and threat of nuclear conflict.

The Wires Aryana Mohmood spoke with Nuclear-Free Campaigner with the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF), Dave Sweeney, about the impacts the AUKUS project would have on Australia and local communities.

Heart Foundation calls for greater funding to install AEDs "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

Sudden cardiac arrest can strike anywhere, anytime, and is often fatal without prompt and appropriate intervention from bystanders.

This message comes as The Heart Foundation is calling for greater funding and support to install greater numbers of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in public facilities and for further regulation for e-cigarettes, tobacco and junk food advertising to reduce the risk young people get heart disease and other chronic conditions later in life.

Historic Agreement for the High Seas "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

After more than a decade of negotiations, United Nations member countries have agreed to the first ever treaty to protect the worlds oceans that lie outside national boundaries.

Environmental groups say the UN High Seas Treaty will help reverse biodiversity losses and ensure sustainable development, but caution there is still a long way to go before implementation.

The Treaty will reportedly see 30% of international waters become protected by 2030 by facilitating the establishment of marine protected areas in the High seas.Under the treaty, countries will need to assess the environmental impact that certain activities have on the environment including mining.

The Wires Chloe White spoke with CEO of the Australian Marine Conservation Society Darren Kindleysides (Kindly-sides), on the important role of this Treaty on conservation efforts worldwide.

Land rights determinations usually go to the wrong people "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

From Kev Moore

In 1996 the Carr Government in NSW badly needed a success story to validate its land claims legislation, under which not one square inch of land had been restored to its aboriginal owners. Fortunately, there was a case in the legal pipeline, which could fill the need. The Crescent Head case on the NSW central coast had been before the courts for months, and the NSW Aboriginal Land Council, representing Mary-Lou Buck of the Dunghutti people, had established its native title credentials.

Crescent Head Island originally handed to the wrong people

When the Crescent Head ruling was handed down, the first ever case of aboriginal land being restored to its rightful owners was touted as establishing the native title credentials of the Carr Labor administration. The land was handed over with great fanfare, and the new aboriginal owners promptly sold their title. Perhaps they knew something Carr didnt?

Now, however, according to columnist Piers Ackerman (Sunday Telegraph, 31/1/99) there is doubt that the Dunghutti people really were the traditional owners of the Crescent Head land. The allegation has been raised by another Dunghutti, Anthony Carter, who points out that there is a very strong case of traditional ownership by the Biripai people. The NSW Land Council has refused to acknowledge these doubts as valid, because its own credibility is at stake. It was the Land Council that validated the Dunghutti claim, and provided the experts to verify their validation. Last November, a meeting of a num...

The Launching of The Other Great Reset "IndyWatch Feed National"

(Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htZZf3gGflk&ab_channel=Redacted)

Introduction by DM

Above, Clayton Morrisons video on World War.

At the end of this short video, Clayton mentions a company searching for gas in Europe to replace Russian gas. And guess who is part of this company? General Wesley Clarke. Amazing how the revolving door works.

In this article on Gumshoe:

Retired General Wesley Clark spent 34 years in the Army, became Supreme Allied Commander Europe of NATO from 1997 to 2000, received many military decorations, several honorary knighthoods, and a Presidential Medal of Freedom.

He told us in 2007 that the US were planning to destroy the Middle East 7 countries in 5 years. A great tip which he got much praise for in alternative circles. But WHY did he just sit on that intel for six years while the US et al destroyed several of those countries?

Below, an interesting worldview from Clayton and Tucker Carlson (one of the only anti-war mainstream voices) on the role of journalism, political division, and beneficiaries of a rotten system. Tucker talks about the liberation of not lying.

Inquiry shines light on the harmful Centrelink mutual obligation system "IndyWatch Feed National"

Contributed from Queensland

As the Robodebt inquiry rolls on, it not only causes embarrassment to for those politicians who were responsible and the bureaucrats who implemented it, this and other related inquiries are bringing other injustices to light.

The most important of these came by way of ombudsmans office submission into the Senate inquiry into the ParentsNext scheme for single parents, which takes aim against the mutual obligations system. Mutual obligation came into existence years ago. The original purpose was to target the unemployed. It was justified under the claim that recipients of Centrelink payments are somehow doing something wrong.

The system depends on a contractual agreement and imposing penalties for deemed breeches. The effect has been to propagate the accusation that the receiver of a Centrelink benefit is a malingerer trying to live it easy.

Anyone who has experienced not having a proper job and trying to make ends meet will tell you that this is far from being a ticket to an easy life. It is tough living in poverty. To be treated as a third-rate citizen, humiliated, and being forced pass through ongoing and meaningless loops makes it all that much worse.

Cartoon by Megan Herbert

Being under the presumption that you are doing something wrong invites mistreatment. You are always presumed guilty of wrongdoing. Under the system, most will sooner or later have their payment suspended because of often unproven accusations or for not complying. For instance, if you do not turn up for an appointment if you are sick. The same thing will if you happen to be working on that day or attending a job interview. it does not matter whether you inform them of the fact or not.

The mutual obligation system is engineered to be a system of punishment for having the affront to register for Centrelink. The purpose has been to discourage registration, and this has the effect of lowering the numbers and making the government of the day look better.

Making involvement with Centrelink into hell on Earth creates desperate people, who will take on underpaid and substandard working conditions. This suits those who want a cheap labour force to pull down wages and working...

Wasting $7B on Olympics and $235m on the Voice instead should be spent on defence "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

By Gil May

The Chinese military have been on high alert war footing for over a year, they spend 293.35 billion U.S. dollars a year on defence, THEY DO NOT DO THAT JUST TO DEFEND CHINA. The make border incursions into India testing their ability to respond, they killed an estimated 120 India soldiers with microwave beams. They have been flying large numbers of planes into Taiwan airspace practice runs, to test their defence and to provoke US and identify where they will respond from, giving them the target to take out before attacking Taiwan. The have surveyed the deep ocean trenches around Australian and other countries where they can safely hide nuclear submarines to attack as they choose.

ADF are unable to defend Canberra let alone Australia while Marxist Premiers disarm the states

They have had spies all over Australia for decades and the governments did nothing, they own land near every major facility ready to take them out, they have mapped every bit of Australia, tourists found them in many out of way areas, with short hair, regimented sharp staunch manners from years of military training.

Senior US and NATO Generals, top US House Foreign Affairs officials and UN Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, have all seriously warned China is about to start a major nuclear war, probably in 2025. The spy balloons and ocean spy-buoys that float just below the surface are just a small part made public, they had their practice run with covid, under that guise they vaccinated their population against the big one they are about to release genetically targeted.

Branding the Acceptable: Battling Cancel Culture at Adelaide Writers Week - by Dr Binoy Kampmark "IndyWatch Feed National"

Writing festivals are often tired, stilted affairs, but the 38th Adelaide Writers Week did not promise to be that run-of-the-mill gathering of yawn-inducing, life draining sessions. For one thing, social media vultures and public relations experts, awaiting the next freely explosive remark or unguarded comment, were at hand to stir the pot and exhort cancel culture. [This article by Dr Binoy Kampmark was first published March 12 2023 at https://theaimn.com/branding-the-acceptable-battling-cancel-culture-at-adelaide-writers-week/]

The fuss began with the festival organisers invitation of two Palestinian authors, Susan Abulhawa and Mohammed El-Kurd. Abulhawa was specifically targeted for critical comments on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, notably regarding NATO membership, and for being a mouthpiece of Russian propaganda, while El-Kurd  out for social-media commentary on the Israeli state, calling it sadistic, demonic and a death cult.

Righteously, the South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas showed his less than worldly view on such festivals by insisting on boycotting their talks and presentations. Ever the vote-getting politician, there were those constituents at the Association of Ukrainians in South Australia who had been making noise, notably through their president, Frank Fursenko. We are very concerned that [the festival organisers] are giving a platform to people who are known apologists for the Russian invasion of Ukraine,  Fursenko.

Malinauskas even contemplated pulling government funding from the event, something he  opening Writers Week. (This was also the view of the South Australian opposition leader, David Speirs.) The premier, it should be noted, is less morally troubled  the LIV Golf tournament, backed b...

SP PNG Hunters beat Western Clydesdales 20 - 10 "IndyWatch Feed Niugini"

The PNG Hunters and the weather rained all over the Western Clydesdales parade, as the Hunters triumphed 20-10 in wet conditions at Clive Berghofer Stadium.

It was a historic day in Toowoomba as the Clydesdales played their first game in Cup since 2006.

Fullback Morea Morea was named the Hastings Deering player of the match [Photo by QRL Media]

The new team certainly fought hard and showed plenty of resilience with two second half tries, but the Hunters came in to ruin the party, proving to be just too strong for the home team.

Backrower Sherwin Tanabi was full of praise for the Hunters debutants in particular, after the club underwent a large turnover for 2023.

Fullback Morea Morea was named the Hastings Deering player of the match, standing up for his side as the rain poured down for the majority of the match.

Its exciting I really cant express it because half of the team, they are new boys who came up from Digicel Cup, Tanabi said.

All the boys, they were amazing. Most of the new boys, they were in the middle, but they just kept backing themselves up.

We had to defend three sets in a row but everyone was good and stood up for each other and we got the win in the end.

Our fullback, young Morea Morea, he was Digicel Cup player of the year last year and he did some good things out on the field.

He had good ball returns, he was safe at the back. But everyone stood up for each other.

While the Clydesdales didnt record their first victory, there will be plenty to take from that match.

Errors hampered their attempts at a comeback, but captain Darryn Schonig led strongly from the front while hooker Drew Timms, prop Todd White and interchange lock Takai Mokohar also impressed.

Tanabi felt the impact of the resilient Clydesdales team and said they certainly challenged the Hunters.

We didnt know what that team would be like but we knew they wanted to come out and...

Assange protest outside Attorney General Mark Dreyfus's office (3 March 2023) "IndyWatch Feed National"

On March 3, 2023, protesters gathered outside Mark Dreyfus, the Australian Attorney General's office, to complain of Dreyfus's failure to object to the British Government's illegal and cruel imprisonment of heroic Australian citizen, Julian Assange. March 3 is Assange's birthday. Inside is the text of James Sinnamon's speech on that occasion.

Text of James Sinnamon's speech

We are here today outside the office of a local Member of Parliament. Mark Dreyfus. Mark Dreyfus is the Attorney General of Australia, is the highest legal officer in the country.

As the highest legal officer in Australia, he knows full well that the imprisonment of Julian Assange in Belmarsh Prison is illegal. Julian Assange has committed no crime. The only crime he has committed is through his Wikileaks news service, telling the world the facts about American crimes - American war crimes - in countries that they have illegally invaded. Those countries include Iraq, Syria, Libya Afghanistan, and others. He also has reported on corruption in the American political system and corruption in the Australian political system. Through Julian Assange, citizens of the world know a whole lot more that the US and the Australian governments would prefer them not to know. That is why, since 2012, he has been effectively locked up - first of all in the Ecuadorian Embassy where he had to flee to avoid being extradited to America. Four years ago, in April 2019, he was illegally taken from the Ecuadorian Embassy and locked away in Belmarsh prison. For most of that time, he has been locked away in solitary confinement.

Julian Assange is guilty of no crime. One crooked judge found Julian Assange guilty of the misdemeanor of skipping bail. Julian Assange skipped bail in 2012 so that he could not be kidnapped and send over to the United States, where they had plans to lock him away in solitary confinement for the rest of his life.

His trial, since April 2019, was thoroughly crooked. No jury, no judge, with any decency, would have sentenced Julian Assange, who has committed no crime to be locked away further in solitary confinement. No decent judge, no decent jury, would have ordered Julian Assange be extradited to the United States. Yet that is exactly what happened.

The only way this could have happened was if the trial was overseen by a crooked judge, under the orders of the British government and United States.

Why didnt the Australian government say anything about it? It's ast...

I need Help. Tips, directions, a little guidance. Everything is welcome. "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

I'm an international student from Nigeria, in Townsville studying at James Cook University. I'm studying an undergraduate course and I currently have a place to stay, I arrived here last month.

The quality of life here in the suburbs has been amazing. The weather in Townsville is so similar to my home country and the people are so nice, I've gotten so many free rides and whenever I stop to ask for directions or if I've gotten lost or need the right direction for which bus to take.

I need some help with a couple of things and I'll be grateful for any sort of tips in the right directions, guidance on the right way to go about it or any help in general and that's in the area of income.

I have a scholarship from my home country to study here which covers my housing, basic feeding and school fees. But I have the freedom to take on jobs as far it doesn't bother my class timetable. And I need it. Funny side note (I've been using my Samsung A50 for 5 years now, I wanted to show a lecturer something.. I needed to open the jcu app to ask my question. We both were still waiting for the app to open on my phone, he got tired, he opened his phone. Unlocked it and opened the same app. And it opened on his own phone before mine. So yeah) buying stuff like a new durable device isn't covered and I need good income to plan to replace it.

So any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Dutch politicians trying to take 3000 farms out of production using military road blocks enrages the population "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

The NWO plan to remove farming, hence food is heating up in the pilot country of Netherlands similar to Queensland where the Labor Corporation has legislated to severely reduce the use of nitrogen fertiliser on coastal farms, in effect removing their ability to produce crops.

Every farm between the Great Dividing Range and the coastline from Cairns and Brisbane, some 1900 klms, is affected. Government policies worldwide have pushed up the price of nitrogenous fertilisers by 500 per cent or more except in Russia. Now that the stupid Labor and Liberal politicians in Canberra have alienated Australia with Russia by putting our troops and hardware on the Ukranian front line we are unable to purchase their cheap and abundant nitrogenous fertilisers.

Researchers have long discovered there is more nitrogen-based runoff from coastal cities into the Pacific Ocean than ever there was from farming. Urea, made up of 46 per cent nitrogen dissipates into the atmosphere if left exposed to the weather for any length of time. It dissolves with moisture and farmers bury it into the soil when applying it to their paddocks where it is taken up by plants.

The amount of runoff into waterways and the ocean has been found to be negligible. In any case reputable scientists say the Great Barrier Reef is in fine shape and always has been.

Australian primary producer bodies such as the National Farmers Federation simply go along with whatever hue of government, not offering any protection to their hard-pressed members from vexatious, partisan policies.

Since it inception in the early 80s the NFF has been a training ground for National or Liberal party candidates who will not oppose any government policy whether it is detrimental to the industry or not.

The state member associations of the NFF fare no better and have no credible runs on the board when it comes to shutting down agriculture.

As Time Went By "IndyWatch Feed Niugini"

D5017056-E0F9-40A5-819A-37DF14A9E88BBy Cathy Jameson

In an October 2020 post, I wrote, As time goes by, well certainly learn more about the coronavirus and any long-term effects it may have.  Thatll hopefully include learning about the quarantine precautions we were asked to take, too.  Evidence already shows that some precautions have had detrimental effects, including an increase in mental health.

A recent paper, which included results of the fear of contagion and its behavior, focused on a younger population.  Authors of that paper, which was revised in October 2022, shared that, The main conclusion reached by this manuscript is that, as the existing specific literature has already shown, COVID-19 has had different negative psychological consequences among certain vulnerable groups, including adolescents and young adults. The results presented allow us to verify, within these psychological consequences, how the symptoms of generalized anxiety or major depression disorder are a consequence of the fear of COVID-19.

It's terribly sad to see reports that people are sadder now than they were before.  From a recent story in The Washington Post, Joel Achenbach asks America shut down in response to covid.  Would we ever do it again? Its a quick read if you havent seen it yet.  The part that resonated the most with me was this:

the pain of the national shutdown - businesses going under, weddings postponed, protracted isolation of the elderly, learning losses among schoolkids - is glaringly obvious.  Critics of pandemic restrictions contend that the cure was worse than the disease

In AUKUS, Navy eyes a full-service submarine garage in Asia-Pacific "IndyWatch Feed National"

The U.S. Navy envisions a submarine hub in Australia from which the service can oversee the entire range of undersea activities in the Asia-Pacific region, from boat production to repairs to missions, service Secretary Carlos del Toro said last month. His comments, made ahead of a major announcement about the U.S.-U.K.-Australian submarine partnership dubbed AUKUS, reveal how Washington views its future relationship with Australia as a key foothold in closer proximity to rival China. Bloomberg reported earlier this week President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese are expected to address the way ahead in the pact on March 13 in San Diego, California. With most of the plans for a fleet of nuclear-powered boats for Canberra still up in the air, the U.S. sea service has its eyes on the near-term benefit of being able to base and repair U.S. Virginia-class attack submarines in Australian ports. Del Toro told Defense News last...

The vulnerabilities, tracked as CVE-2023-1017 and CVE-2023-1018, provide pathways for an authenticated, local attacker to overwrite protected data in the TPM firmware and launch code execution attacks, according to an advisory from Carnegie Mellons CERT coordination center.

From the CERT alert:

An authenticated, local attacker could send maliciously crafted commands to a vulnerable TPM allowing access to sensitive data. In some cases, the attacker can also overwrite protected data in the TPM firmware. This may lead to a crash or arbitrary code execution within the TPM. Because the attackers payload runs within the TPM, it may be undetectable by other components of the target device.

An attacker who has access to a TPM-command interface can send maliciously-crafted commands to the module and trigger these vulnerabilities. This allows either read-only access to sensitive data or overwriting of normally protected data that is only available to the TPM (e.g., cryptographic keys), the center added.

Quarkslab researchers Francisco Falcon and Ivan Arce are credited with finding the bugs and leading an industry-wide coordinated vulnerability process ahead of Tuesdays public advisory.

The Trusted Computing Group (TCG) responsible for maintaining the TPM spec has issued an...

Queensland Police will accept new recruits from any country in the world, no requirement for Australian citizenship "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

Dissatisfied Queensland Police have left the service in droves joining those reported 1500 officers who have been pushed out by Covid vaxx mandates, regional officers claim.

Muslim police officers from Iran are welcome to apply

Police sources say there is much discontent within the service with one senior officer claiming present Labor Party-appointed Commissioner Katarina Carroll is the problem.

f she doesnt go soon there will be no police left anyway, one officer said.

At least 196 senior officers across the state were exempted from the mandatory Covid jab in 2021, which did not go unnoticed by the rank and file.

Desperately trying to make up sufficient numbers to fill shifts, foreign nationals with policing experience will be eligible to apply to the Queensland Police Service (QPS) under a new labour agreement between the State and Federal Governments.

The QPS has approval for 500 new international recruits to join the service each year, for five years.

The agreement, the broadest of its kind among Australias policing jurisdictions, allows the QPS to recruit international police officers without the requirement to be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.

All police officers recruited under the new labour agreement will be required to pass the QPS recruit testing and vetting.

Depending on the level and recency of their experience, successful recruits will be trained through either the existing...

Is the bridge disappearing from modern songs? "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

Songs have component parts, a structure. Theres a verse, and a chorus. More verse and chorus, maybe an instrumental solo. And theres something called a bridge.

The bridge, sometimes called the middle eight, happens a couple of minutes into the song. The melody and chord pattern will be different to the rest of the song, the lyric might introduce a new part of the story, a new idea, a resolution. A good bridge sets up the end of the song, and its often the bit where the magic happens.

The bridge has been part of popular music for a hundred years, maybe more. But we dont hear them so much in contemporary song. About a year ago, Sting said he feels the bridge is disappearing, and there are many in the music business who agree. Software is increasingly used to write songs, and a good bridge might be too hard for a computer. Certainly, streaming services favour shorter, simpler songs.

Why does the bridge matter? Listen to some great examples.

Missing Ukrainian Girl Rescued From Russian Re-Education Camp "IndyWatch Feed National"

KYIV, Ukraine Tetiana Vlaiko feels like an idiot. She is ashamed to speak to WhoWhatWhy about how the Russians took her 11-year-old daughter Lilia to Russian-occupied Crimea. She says that last October, the teachers at her daughters school in Kherson convinced her to send Lilia to what they called a summer camp.

It turned out to be a Russian re-education facility.

All the mothers at the school signed up. Probably, I could have said no, but the teachers kept saying that all kids are going, it is for free, and she will come back in two weeks, said 36-year-old Vlaiko.

Vlaiko said that she initially thought it would be good for her daughter to get away from Kherson for a short period. At the time, the city was under Russian control, and the Ukrainians were fighting to get the city back. Life there was dangerous. Vlaiko says there were rumors of Russian brutality and rape of people on the streets and a constant risk of shelling.

Crimea was (and still is) also under Russian control, but it was safer than Kherson.

Lilia was supposed to be home on October 21. She didnt show up, and neither did any of her classmates.

I called the teachers when I realized she wasnt returning. I tried to find out what was happening, but they didnt answer, said Vlaiko, who explained that some teachers picked up the phone at the beginning and said they didnt know when or if the kids would return.

She told WhoWhatWhy that the school closed for good after the kids were taken.

At one point in late October, Vlaiko and other parents found the schools director, who told them the kids werent returning. She recalls him saying there was nothing he could do about it and that he was planning to leave Kherson and go to another Russian-controlled area. Vlaiko told WhoWhatWhy that he seemed very pro-Russian.

It became clear that they never intended to send my daughter back. I got crazy hysterical and was full of guilt, said Vlaiko.I should never have told her she could go.

She didnt see her daughter again for almost four months.

Screening for Perinatal Depression: An Effective Intervention, or One That Does More Harm Than Good? "IndyWatch Feed National"

Today, pregnant women are regularly asked about their mental wellbeing during their medical checkups, and such questioning continues during their postnatal visits to their pediatricians. The quickest assessment relies on the Whooley questions, a depression screening tool devised by Pfizer in 1993 shortly after its launch of Zoloft. It has just two questions:

During the past month, have you often been bothered by feeling down, depressed or hopeless?

During the past month, have you often been bothered by little interest, or pleasure in doing things?

An answer of yes to one of the two questions yields a positive result requiring further evaluation. If a subsequent assessment determines that the woman is depressed, she may be treated for the condition, even though prior to the screening she might not have self-identified as suffering in this way.

In the United States, such perinatal screening is widely recommended. The American Psychiatric Association (APA), the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists (ACOG), the United States Preventative Services Task Force, and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) all promote it as an evidence-based practice.

According to the AHRQ, which is part of the Department of Health and Human Services, it provides a proven benefit: Depression during pregnancy can raise the risk of having a lowbirthweight baby and premature birth. Screening pregnant women for depression enables health professionals to initiate services that can prevent later problems for both the mother and baby.

However, other national task forces, most notably in Canada and the U.K., have come to an opposite conclusion about the merits of perinatal screening. The U.K. National Screening Committee concluded in its 2019 review that there was not enough evidence that such screening programmes were of benefit to women and children, and that, in fact, they could do harm. False positives could lead to unnecessary treatment, and even if the screening correctly identified [women] with mental health problems, it could prove harmful to the majority, the committee wrote.......

HOA Foreclosures Are a Lose-Lose Game for Coloradans, but These Lawyers Win Regardless of the Outcome "IndyWatch Feed National"

This article was produced for ProPublicas Local Reporting Network in partnership with Rocky Mountain PBS. Sign up for Dispatches to get stories like this one as soon as they are published.

Karl Paymah was on the clock.

A certified letter from the Rock Ridge Condominium Association in the Denver suburb of Aurora said he had 30 days to pay $1,515.45 in unpaid homeowners association dues and penalties or face foreclosure.

After receiving the letter on Dec. 23, 2021, Paymah said he tried to pay the balance through the HOAs website, as he had done in the past. But his account had been locked because it was turned over to the HOAs collections attorney, Tammy Alcock. Next, he called Rock Ridges management company, which he said told him to discuss the matter with Alcock. But there was no answer when he called her office three times that afternoon. The office of Alcock Law Group was closed for the holiday.

I cant pay. I cant pay through the portal. I cant pay with the management company. I cant pay with this attorney that theyre telling me to go through, Paymah, a retired NFL cornerback, recalled thinking. So Im just sitting there.

Watch Rocky Mountain PBSs Report (Jeremy Moore/Rocky Mountain PBS)

Turning the account over to Alcock meant that the association was asserting its right under Colorado law to charge him for the attorney fees it was incurring, causing his debt to grow rapidly.

By early February, when Rock Ridge began moving forward with foreclosure, the legal process of taking the home from its owner, Paymahs debt had more than tripled to about $5,000, mostly because of legal costs.

Paymahs experience is a case study in how even a small dispute can quickly escalate into an expensive legal fight in Colorado, where state law empowers HOAs to initiate foreclosure proceedings against homeowners who owe money to them. As Rocky Mountain PBS and ProPublica have reported,...

Saying see you later to a blind man or woman was simply unacceptable and could confuse the poor person, Mr Beattie said.

Policeman is just not on lest a request to a gender neutral police person be taken the wrong way.

University law school tries to head off milestone Covid litigation conference Covid lawsuits the next growth industry "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

From Steve Kirsch Newsletter

The Public Health Administrative State Under Fire

ATLANTA, GA In what appears to be a direct response to the long-planned Covid Litigation Conference (CLC 2023) on March 25-26 in Atlanta the Georgia State University (GSU) Law School, in conjunction with state agencies, has suddenly announced a rival conference to take place two days prior.

Titled The Public Health Administrative State Under Fire, the agency seminar appears in sharp contrast to the CLC 2023, which plans on sharing successful legal strategies for suing some of those agencies.  The GSU Law School seminar was publicly launched shortly after a Rolling Stone piece covered CLC 2023.

Over the next 10 years, Covid lawsuits are expected to see tremendous growth. This unfortunate development reflects the need to bring justice in the courts for hundreds of thousands of people negatively impacted by harmful Covid-19 policies.

CLC 2023 will be an opportunity for lawyers both in the Atlanta area and nationally to gain expertise in best-practices for litigating these cases. Participants will also have a chance to network and cooperate on Covid lawsuits with experienced attorney panelists. CLE has also been requested.

More than 20 attorney panelists include Sujata Gibson (Gibson Law Firm, PLLC), a civil rights attorney and Cornell lecturer who just defeated the NYC healthcare mandate, and Ralph Lorigo (Law Offices of Ralph Lorigo), who has litigated over 200 hospital negligence cases during the pandemic.  Other featured attorneys include Robert Barnes (Barnes Law, LLP), Mary Holland (Chief Counsel of Childrens Health Defense), Tom Renz (Renz Law),  Mark Meuser (Dhillon Law Group), Tricia Lindsay (Tricia Lindsay Law), Warner Mendenhall (Mendenhall Law Group), Jeff Childers (Childers Law), Bobbie Anne Flower Cox (Cox Lawyers, PLLC), Tracy Henderson (Founder of California Parents United), and Ryan Heath (The Gavel Project).

CLC 2023 is sponsored by the Mendenhall Law Group and the Vaccine Safety Research Foundation (VSRF), supported by ticket sales and participant sponsorships, whereas Georgia taxpayers will foot the bill for The Public Health Administrative State Under Fire.

Ive got to say its pretty shocking that Georgia taxpayers are having to pay for what looks like a petty game of one-upmanship especially when it comes to the health and safety of so many injured by the Covid-19 vaccine, said Steve Kirsch, philanthropist and President of the VSRF.  He continued, The equivalent would be a university-backed seminar in the 1990s featuring government agencies telling the personal injury bar why lawsuits against Big Tobacco would never work.

Former ALP Premier Peter Beattie covered up $1 billion bad debt swindle "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

Republished from 2021

Cairnsnews will be publishing a series of reports, perhaps nostalgic for older Queensland readers but what we are exposing from the 1970s, 80s and 90s until the present day is the extent of corruption between government, police, public service, big business and the unions. Queenslanders dropped their guard after the Fitzgerald Inquiry, which, incidentally did not go near the drug trade thinking we would go on to live in a somewhat sanitized society. Cairnsnews can reveal that nothing changed after the socialist Labor Party took over government in the early 90s and in fact the Marxists made corruption and voter fraud an art form. Just ask the present Premier about her cosy relationship with the medical mafia, a part of which her father manages. On it goes, nothing has changed since Tony Fitzgerald waged war with crooked cops and politicians. This is the first of a series of Queensland the Corrupted State.

by Des ONeill

When it comes to the bags of cash kickbacks, the Fitzgerald Inquiry made a big thing (and so they should have) of old Joh Bjelke-Petersen receiving bags of $50,000 cash.

Immediately after Fitzgerald the CORRUPT EVIL ALP made an ART FORM out of corrupt bags of cash only they now call it CONSULTANTS FEES.

You see what was happening was that small business individuals, wishing to establish in QLD, could apply for a GOVERNMENT sponsored loan. If they approached their local ALP Member, they were told there was a upfront CONSULTANTS FEE of $50,000.1 billion

In 1996 after the GOSS ALP administration had been in power for six years the bad debt for QIDC (Queensland Industry Development Corporation) blew out to $962 Million. (YES THATS ALMOST 1 BILLION DOLLARS). Some of this bad debt was part of the old Nationals pre-Fitzgerald loans for mates scheme (which were never paid back) BUT THE BULK OF THE BAD DEBT MONEY WAS UNDER THE GOSS ADMINISTRATION.

B lost both her legs in a subway accident. When I met her, she was living in a medical homeless shelter and panhandling daily in a wheelchair. B has four kids who, for a while, were living with her ex. It was not a good scenario. Very long story short: The State eventually took the kids away from him and temporarily placed them with Bs mother.

Australia to buy 5 nuclear-powered submarines as part of AUKUS in violation of previous commitments to China "IndyWatch Feed National"

In a major expansion and overhaul of its navy, Australia is planning to buy up to five US Virginia class nuclear powered submarines beginning in the next decade, Reuters and others are reporting. US as well as European officials have disclosed the future deal as part of a "landmark defense agreement between Washington, Canberra and London, four U.S. officials said on Wednesday, in a deal that would present a new challenge to China." Comment: Well, it's not so much a 'challenge' to China as it is a provocation, and further confirmation that the West is pathological in its plans to 'contain' the country. The impending agreement is seen as central to the relatively new AUKUS partnership, and the major sub deal is expected to be announced when President Joe Biden, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak meet in San Diego Monday.

Jubilee Year 2026, Part One: Introduction "IndyWatch Feed National"

by Mary W Maxwell, LLB

I am here to propose a Jubilee Year in 2026. We have thirty-three months to get it ready the rest of 2023, plus 24, and 25. Not long enough, but it will keep us focused on the positive.

A biblical jubilee year is one that occurs every 49 years and has to do with preserving the land. Thats not what Im proposing, though I did get my idea from that tradition.

What I want us to do is to focus on the future.  At the moment, its only an intellectual exercise. Lets inventory the good possibilities for human life. Sure, the bad stuff will also come into focus, as the counterpoint. But the project is intended to be positive. We are tired of horrors.

Searching

I dare nominate only my home country, the US, for a jubilee.  But its patent that this country interacts with many others. I shall make it a rule that the jubilee search for a better life in US cannot include taking advantage of other nations.

In the 1960s, when in college, I read Ruth Benedicts 1934 book, Patterns of Culture. She was in the pioneering group of anthropologists who visited primitive societies. When asked which societies are happy, she said the ones in which the reward for a...

Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic Hearings Investigating the Origins of COVID-19 Hit Tip of Iceberg

By Peter A. McCullough, MD, MPH | Courageous Discourse | March 10, 2023

On November 19, 2020 I testified as the lead witness in the US Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs led by Senator Ron Johnson. I used the term academic fraud in a series of sharp exchanges with now White House Coronavirus Coordinator Dr. Ashish Jha. I was told by colleagues that the term fraud was too strident and I should tone down my comments for the media.

Over two years later the US House of Representatives Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic held hearings on Investigating the Origins of COVID-19 and has hit the tip of an iceberg of academic fraud with a trail of peer-reviewed manuscripts as evidence for the creation of the SARS-CoV-2 chimeric virus in the Wuhan Institute of Virology Biosecurity Annex Level 4 laboratory (WIV). This lab had been conducting experiments designed by UNC researcher Dr. Ralph Baric for years and publishing their progress on creation of a coronavirus that could invade human respiratory cells via the ACE2 receptor. They were also developing countermeasures including monoclonal antibodies and killed virus vaccines.

Learn About the Importance of Cairns (And Why You Shouldnt Make Your Own)

Cairn in Zion National Park

Photo: Veisha Flickr (CC BY-NC-ND 2.0)

If you've ever been on a hiking trail and seen a manmade stack of rocks, then you've encountered a cairn. Since prehistoric times, humans have stacked rocks as waymarkers or memorials. Scotland, in particular, is rife with cairns and, in fact, the word comes from the Gaelic word crn meaning heap of stones. In more modern times, cairns have been used to mark trails and mountains, help give directions, and even provide wind shelters.

But, people are increasingly building their own cairns without understanding their true purpose, and this is cause for concern. Sometimes celebrated as a zen practice, building cairns can have consequences. By adding cairns to trails without any consideration, it's possible to confuse hikers who use the rock stacks as directional markers. They can also disturb the environment, robbing the animals who live under the rocks of their shelter. The practice can also dislodge plants and inadvertently cause soil erosion. At the same time, it's also not wise to add to or knock over existing cairns, as you might confuse hikers who used authorized rock stacks as directional markers.

For these reasons, it's technically illegal to practice rock stacking in National Parks. While not always widely enforced, rangers consider these stacks to be rock graffiti' and will take them down when theyre spotted or discourage visitors caught building them, notes the Zion National Park hiking guide. All parks take a ...

Tale of Two Workers "IndyWatch Feed National"

What are workers? Are they human beings? Do they have only a bundle of muscles but, no brains? How do they feel and how do they think? Do they think at all? What do they face in their life in factories, in foundries and other shops, in assembly lines, in unions?

Workers answers to the questions above differ from the response the workers masters present. The factor that draws the delineating line is, in short, class position, which is often blurred while discussing issues of life and work, be it related to workplace or economic program, politics or social initiatives, charity, cooperative, ideology or culture.

Michael D. Yates, a labor organizer, discusses this issue in the chapter 1, Take this job and of his recently released book Work Work Work: Labor, Alienation, and Class Struggle (Monthly Review Press, New York, 2022). The professor of labor economics begins the chapter with a statement, simple or complicated:

It would be astonishing if the more than 150 million child laborers in the world were happily employed. Or if the 800 million farmworkers globally were content with their circumstances.

The mainstream investigates: Child laborers happiness with employment? Isnt it an invalid question? The system takes away happiness of childhood from millions of children, and then, searches whether or not the child workers are happy? The system shackles millions of farmworkers into bondage, and then, searches whether or not the farmworkers are happy? The system enslaves millions of workers into a life without humane condition, and then, surveys whether or not the workers are content with their life? Isnt it a mockery by the system and its scholarship? Isnt it a crude trick to hide the systems cruelty and its scholarships identity in the payroll of the system?

Michael Yates tells about two workers: his father and Ben Hamper, author of Rivethead: Tales from the Assembly Line (Warner Books, New York, 1991): Both spent good portions of their lives as factory workers, my father in a glassworks and Ben Hamper in an auto plant.

The description goes further: Both became factory workers because it was almost predetermined that they would. All their relatives and friends were factory hands.

Matt Hancock is a monkey. But who was the organ grinder? "IndyWatch Feed National"

I find the Daily Telegraph's 'Lockdown Files' revelations about Matt Hancock's WhatsApp messages simultaneously reassuring and disturbing. Reassuring, because over the many months I analysed Covid related data for Lockdown Sceptics (as this site was then called) I often had periods of self-doubt. Official announcements by politicians and senior civil servants were so discordant with publicly available information, I assumed I must be missing something, or misinterpreting the figures. Worse, I worried about inadvertently misleading our readership. Recent revelations suggest that my analyses were roughly correct - I'm not claiming any credit because the answers were hiding in plain sight. Anyone with a modicum of common sense and a basic training in biological sciences could have seen it - and many did. On the other hand, the message trails are disturbing for what they tell us about the nature of decision making in government. It is easy to be misled by taking Hancock's adolescent...

John Pilger: The Betrayers of Julian Assange "IndyWatch Feed National"

I have known Julian Assange since I first interviewed him in London in 2010. I immediately liked his dry, dark sense of humour, often dispensed with an infectious giggle. He is a proud outsider: sharp and thoughtful. We have become friends, and I have sat in many courtrooms listening to the tribunes of the state try to silence him and his moral revolution in journalism.

My own high point was when a judge in the Royal Courts of Justice leaned across his bench and growled at me: You are just a peripatetic Australian like Assange. My name was on a list of volunteers to stand bail for Julian, and this judge spotted me as the one who had reported his role in the notorious case of the expelled Chagos Islanders. Unintentionally, he delivered me a compliment.

I saw Julian in Belmarsh not long ago. We talked about books and the oppressive idiocy of the prison: the happy-clappy slogans on the walls, the petty punishments; they still wont let him use the gym. He must exercise alone in a cage-like area where there is sign that warns about keeping off the grass. But there is no grass. We laughed; for a brief moment, some things didnt seem too bad.

The laughter is a shield, of course. When the prison guards began to jangle their keys, as they like to do, indicating our time was up, he fell quiet. As I left the room he held his fist high and clenched as he always does. He is the embodiment of courage.

Those who are the antithesis of Julian: in whom courage is unheard of, along with principle and honour, stand between him and freedom. I am not referring to the Mafia regime in Washington whose pursuit of a good man is meant as a warning to us all, but rather to those who still claim to run a just democracy in Australia.

Anthony Albanese was mouthing his favourite platitude, enough is enough long before he was elected prime minister of Australia last year. He gave many of us precious hope, including Julians family. As prime minister he added weasel words about not sympathising with what Julian had done. Apparently we had to understand his need to cover his appropriated posteria in case Washington called him to order.

We knew it would take exceptional political if not moral courage for Albanese to stand up in the Australian Parliament the same Parliament that will disport itself before Joe Biden in May and say:

As prime minister, it is my governments responsibility to bring home an Australian citizen who is clearly the victim of a great, vindictive injustice: a man who has been persecuted for the kind of journalism that is a true public service, a man who has not lied, or deceived like so many of his counterfeit in the media, but has told people the truth about how the world is run.

I call on the United States, a courageous and moral Prime Minister Albanese might say, to wi...

Solar Mitigation Battleground "IndyWatch Feed National"

A battle over how to protect the planet from overheating is heating up.

Academics are coming out of the woodwork, forming coalitions, issuing declarations. A subdued debate over the merits versus demerits of solar geoengineering (SRM) has been ongoing for years. Now battle lines are forming.

The SRM controversy is coming to a head, in part, because of a small two-person startup company named Make Sunsets launching weather balloons filled with reflective sulfur particles off the coast of Baja, California with the bold idea of testing whether it is realistic to reflect sun radiation back to outer space and thus help prevent overheating of the planet. Interestingly, they expect to profit by selling credits. As such, Make Sunsets has become a bit of a renegade actor serving as an unwelcomed catalyst for academics to come to grips with the issue. But looked at from another angle, its a welcomed catalyst for an issue that must be sorted out as soon as possible, regardless of Make Sunsets presence.

After all, the White House has already directed a study of SRM (solar radiation management). On October 13, 2022 the White House announced funding of a five-year research plan: One of the most controversial plans to fight climate change, utilizing technology to artificially modify the planets climate or in plain English geo-engineering by spraying fine aerosols into the atmosphere to reflect sunlight away.

The White House Request for Input to a Five-Year Plan for Research on Climate Intervention itemized, as follows: The report shall include: (1) the definition of goals in relevant areas of scientific research; (2) capabilities required to model, analyze, observe, and monitor atmospheric composition; (3) climate impacts and the Earths radiation budget; and (4) the coordination of Federal research and investments to deliver this assessment to manage near-term climate risk and research in climate intervention.

Obviously, Make Sunsets has jumped the gun and rattled several significant cages, especially in the face of unanswered questions about the risks of artificially tinkering with the climate system. But, then again, is geo-engineering a by-product of fossil fuel CO2 emissions, even if not by design? If yes, it implies that fossil fuel CO2 unintentional geo-engineering should be viewed as the direct opposite of SRM. CO2 traps heat. SRM reflects heat. This would mean that fossil fuel-generated CO2 emissions demonstrate what geo-engineering can accomplish, which is an enormous planetary headache, if misdirected.

In 2021, in Sweden, Harvard Universitys outdoor Stratospheric Controlled Perturbation Experiment was halted on the spot by opposition forces. Their experiment was only aiming to test the behavior of stratospheric aerosols. Harvards failed attempt is a prime example of SRMs steep uphill battle to establish credibility.

10032023 HEALTH MINISTER ADRESSES THE HEALTH STAFF.
NEW DAWN FM NEWS

The newly appointed Health Minister Hon. Dennis Lokonai addressed the health staff at the Buka Hospital Conference Room today. As the former Health Minister in the last term in 2015-2020, he addressed the challenges being faced.
However, with the short frame of time, work needs to be done in all the offices in the Health Department to ensure that the people of Bougainville get the effective health services.
Health Minister outlined the challenges that are faced in the Health Department. He pointed issues that Bougainville hospitals, clinics and aid posts are facing in the three districts. The funding constraints, health officers working without pay, and the run-down of health facilities and drug shortages is the biggest issue in the Health Department.
I want to see changes in the Health Sector. But funding constraints and only less percentage of budget allocation is budgeted to health sector.
But as Minister responsible, I will do my best to ensure that the funding allocation is in the annual budget, Mr. Lokonai stated.
The health minister was asked by the Health Secretary Clement Tatavun for Bougainville Executive Council (BEC) to write up a Policy to migrate recruitment function to health department as it is done at the National Department of Health.
I have two-three weeks to settle and organize office staff and induction for officers and staff on familiarities. We have two and a half years to ensure no time is wasted, Mr. Lokonai said.

SP PNG Hunters name team for Round 1 match against Western Clydesdales "IndyWatch Feed Niugini"

The SP PNG Hunters will kick-off their 2023 campaign when they travel to Clive Berghofer Stadium, Toowoomba on Sunday, 12th of March to take on QRL Hostplus Cup new-comers the Western Clydesdales. Kick-off is at 2:10pm.

The Hunters will play out the 2023 season on home soil for the first time in almost three years, having been relocated to the Gold Coast in seasons 21 and 22 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The anticipation of bringing Queensland Cup rugby league back to Port Moresby is a driving force for the Hunters this year but they will have to play without the home ground advantage on Sunday when they meet the Clydesdales in Toowoomba.

Season 2023 is shaping as a new era for the Hunters with a new coaching staff and a host of changes to the playing squad.

Head Coach Stanley Tepend the current PNG Kumuls Head Coach takes the reins this year and has the support of Kumuls legend Paul Aiton in the coaches box. We can expect a different playing style from the Hunters under Tepends tutelage this season as they look to improve on their 12th placed finish of 2021.

A partnership with The Dolphins NRL club is another key new element to the Hunters 23 campaign. Hunters players Judah Rimbu, Rodrick Tai and Sherwin Tanabi have all returned to the club following an offseason spent training with The Dolphins NRL squad under Wayne Bennett. The experience afforded these players will no doubt have a positive impact on the wider Hunters squad this year.

Tepend is well positioned in 2023 to take full advantage of what is a growing young squad. Thirteen Hunters debuted last season and those who have returned this year will be better for the experience. As always, on-field combinations take time to develop however there is plenty for Tepend and the coaching staff to build on from season 2022.

There is a little more unknown about the Western Clydesdales, who make their return to the Hostplus Cup this week. Formerly the Toowoomba Clydesdales who last competed in the QRL back in 2006, the revamped club will be eager to make its mark on the competition.

Malaysia asked to reopen MH370 probe after claims of new evidence "IndyWatch Feed National"

Families of the victims have called for a renewed search after the findings of a US-based marine robotics company emerged. Malaysian authorities are being asked to launch a new search for flight MH370, nine years after it disappeared from radars over the South China Sea. The request comes after US marine robotics company Ocean Infinity claimed to have found new evidence of the plane's possible location. The Boeing 777 was en route from Kuala Lumpur International Airport to Beijing with 239 passengers on board on March 8, 2014, when it vanished from the grid less than an hour into its journey. For three years, Malaysia, China, and Australia searched for the plane in the Indian Ocean, where it was believed to have crashed, only to come up empty-handed. The search was officially called off in January 2017, with no conclusion made about what could have happened to the mystery flight.

Artefacts taken by Cook to be returned to rightful custodians "IndyWatch Feed National"

THE very first objects taken from Australia by the British are finally coming home.

When James Cook and his crew first made contact with Aboriginal people in 1770, the British soldiers took dozens of spears from their camps at Botany Bay.

More than 250 years later, only four of those spears remain and they will soon be permanently returned to the Aboriginal community of La Perouse.

The historic announcement was made last Thursday at Bare Island in Botany Bay, which is known as Kamay in the local Indigenous language.

La Perouse Aboriginal Land Council chairwoman Noeleen Timbery described the return of the artefacts as unimaginable.

These spears are the markers of when our shared history began, she said.

Theyre important objects for all Australians, because they tell the story of what happened

ALICE Springs Town Council has made the extraordinary decision to ban an annual community club Aussie rules football competition.

The council last week was presented with a motion to follow- through on the proposal, which passed despite strong opposition raised by two other councillors.

The successful motion means Alice Springs Town Council will withdraw its support for the Community Cup competition which has teams from remote Aboriginal communities in and around Central Australia travelling to Alice Springs for games each weekend during the football season. The council said its decision was based on the town experiencing high levels of social unrest.

The move will impact the senior mens Alice Springs-based Central Australian Football League. The five teams in the CAFL rely on players from those communities which are now banned.

The Community Cup is played on Sundays with the CAFL on Saturdays. Community footballers are permitted to play for their community teams while also playing in the CAFL

Can This Mushroom Help Build New Brain Cells? "IndyWatch Feed National"

Lions mane mushrooms (Hericium erinaceus) have a long history in traditional medicine. A 2023 study1 from the University of Queensland found an extract from the mushroom demonstrates the ability to promote neuron projections and connect those to other neurons.2

Lions mane mushrooms are named for their unique white and shaggy appearance that resembles a lion's mane. They are also known by several other names, including bearded tooth, monkey's head, bearded hedgehog, satyrs beard and pom pom mushroom.3 The mushroom traditionally grows on hardwood trees and has played a role in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Asian culture for centuries.

According to TCM practitioners, lions mane supports the liver, spleen, heart, kidney and lung function.4 Buddhist monks traditionally used lion's mane mushroom tea to enhance brain function and heighten focus. The Chinese began cultivating lion's mane mushrooms in 1988 to meet demand. Today it's becoming a popular functional food in Western cultures.

Lion's mane mushrooms tend to grow in a single clump of dangling spines.5 In the wild, the mushrooms appear in late summer and early fall on dead and dying hardwood trees. The young mushrooms are pure white and tend to turn yellow and brown as they age.

Lions Mane Mushrooms Dramatically Improve Brain Cell Growth

In recent years, fungi have attracted scientific exploration for the potential to improve cognitive function. Lions mane mushrooms have had a long reputation for mental health benefits, prompting a research team from the University of Queensland to delve deeper into how extracts from the mushroom may improve nerve growth and enhance memory.6

The researchers acknowledged the mushroom's ability to enhance peripheral nerve regeneration by targeting nerve growth factors. The hope was to identify bioactive compounds that could help regulate the growth of neurons.7 In the lab, the researchers purified biologically active compounds and tested them against cultured brain cells in a Petri dish. The cells were then evaluated under a super-resolution microscope.

According to study scientist Frdric Meunier, Ph.D., we found the mushroom extract and its active components largely increase the size of growth cones, which are particularly important for brain cells to sense their environment and establish new connections with other neurons...

Wildfire Smoke Linked to Ozone Layer Damage "IndyWatch Feed National"

A new study led by chemists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that wildfire smoke particles, which can remain in the stratosphere for a year, can cause chemical reactions that deplete the protective ozone layer. The findings occurred during the megafire in Australia in December 2019 to January 2020.

The study, published in the journal Nature, analyzed the atmospheric chemical composition over the Southern Hemisphere at mid-latitudes, including regions over Australia and New Zealand and parts of Africa and South America.

The researchers noted that the wildfire smoke particles created chemical reactions in the stratosphere. They estimated that these reactions caused the megafire to contribute to a 3% to 5% depletion in the ozone in the area studied.

The study model also estimated that the wildfires impacted the ozone layer over Antarctica, widening the hole over the Antarctic by 2.5 million square kilometers by the end of 2020, or widening by 10% of its area in comparison to 2019.

The Australian fires of 2020 were really a wake-up call for the science community, Susan Solomon, study author and professor of environmental studies at M.I.T., said in a statement. The effect of wildfires was not previously accounted for in [projections of] ozone recovery. And I think that effect may depend on whether fires become more frequent and intense as the planet warms.

The wildfires analyzed in the study were the worst ever recorded in Australia, burning tens of millions of acres and emitting 1 million tons of smoke into the atmosphere, as M.I.T. reported.

Solomon and her colleagues previously identified a chemical reaction between chlorine-containing compounds, typically chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), and fire aerosols that produced chlorine monoxide, which is known to deplete ozone. So the researchers came back to analyze molecules in the stratosphere following the megafire in Australia.

While the team found that wildfire smoke reactions with hydrochloric acid (HCl) in the stratosphere could deplete ozone, they suspect wildfire smoke could react to other chlorine-containing compounds in the atmosphere, especially wh...

Newly Discovered Enzyme Turns Air Into Electricity, Providing Clean Source of Energy (Maria)

The author writes, Australian scientists have discovered an enzyme that converts air into energy. The finding, published [yesterday] in the journal Nature, reveals that this enzyme uses the low amounts of the hydrogen in the atmosphere to create an electrical current. This finding opens the way to create devices that literally make energy from thin air. The research team, led by Dr. Rhys Grinter, Ph.D. student Ashleigh Kropp, and Professor Chris Greening from the Monash University Biomedicine Discovery Institute in Melbourne, Australia, produced and analyzed a hydrogen-consuming enzyme from a common soil bacterium.

Trumps Threat of a Third-Party Run Is Undercut by Sore Loser Laws (Reader Steve)

The author writes, Donald Trump hates losing so much that he has suggested he will mount a third-party campaign if he doesnt win the Republican presidential nomination. But he cant win that way either, thanks to sore loser laws in six states he would need to return to the White House. Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas, as well as Arkansas and Alabama, have laws that bar a candidate defeated in a major-party primary from running as an independent or on a third-party ticket in the general election. That would put Trump at the general-election starting gate with a deficit of 91 electoral votes of the 270 required to capture the White House.

AWPA letter to Aust. Foreign Minister "IndyWatch Feed Niugini"

Senator the Hon Penny Wong

PO Box 6100
Senate
Parliament House
Canberra ACT 2600

9 March 2023

Dear Foreign Minister,

I am writing to you on behalf of the Australia West Papua Association in Sydney concerning the issue of West Papua. Tragically, the human rights situation in West Papua is seriously deteriorating.

There are ongoing clashes between the Indonesian security forces (TNI) and the Free Papua Movement (TPNPB), resulting in casualties on both sides. The security forces continue to conduct military operations particularly in the highlands resulting in civilian deaths and people fleeing in fear for their lives . The security force operations have created a large number of internal refugees.

The Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras) has recorded that as of December 2022 , that as many as 60,642 civilians have been displaced and 732 of these had died as a result of the armed conflict between the Indonesian military and the Free Papua Movement.

In an article in the local media in West Papua (Jubi, 7 March 2023), it was reported that

in the past week, the security forces conducted a military operation in Yahukimo Regency during which they seized property and arrested a number of civilians. The security operation was instigated by the military after a clash between the TNI and the TPNPB which occurred in the Dekai District . A student community group reported (to the local media) that the security forces confiscated property belonging to civilians and the community. There were several civilians arrested by the authorities during the sweeping,.

The Student Community also reported that because of the military operation the local people were in a state of fear and unable to carry out their normal daily activities. The students also condemned the authorities and urged them to stop sending the military to Yahukimo. They also urged the Yahukimo Police chief to stop arresting civilians, and to immediately release all civilians who are detained and urged the government to withdraw the TNI and police from the District.

A number of Governments seem to believe that the human rights situation has improved under the present Indonesian President , but the governor of the Indonesian governments policy think-tank , the National Resilience Institute (Lemhannas) said that the violence in Papua has tended to increase under the leadership of President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo.

We are sure you are aware of the situation in West Papua and we wont go into great detail of all the human rights abuses that have occurred recently because of military operations in the territory.

However, we would like to bring your attention to the extract below from a UN media release.
