US Governors Re-Election Video Has Him Shooting Mexicans "IndyWatch Feed National"

Far-right Republicans in the United States arent even bothering to hide their bigotry and racism anymore, with the news that a governor from Americas deep south has launched his re-election campaign replete with a deep fake video of him as a gunslinger from the wild west shooting Mexicans.

It comes amid heightening tensions on the southern border of the United States, which has seen more than a million undocumented immigrants cross the border in the past six months. And a few days after the video was released, a man drove his 4WD at high speed into a group of people outside an immigrant/homeless shelter in a border town in Texas. Eight people died, and another 10 were seriously injured.

Tate Reeves is the one-term governor of Mississippi, and last week he formally launched his re-election campaign, taking to Twitter with a brief video that has his face overlaid on Hollywood legend Clint Eastwood.

Its a bizarre video, not least of all because if you know what Reeves actually looks like, its more than a bit of a stretch.

Bad Hair Day Conservative Explains Why Intellectuals Are Mostly Lefties "IndyWatch Feed National"

Believe in social justice? Think equality of outcome is a good thing? Feel a burning desire to rail against racism and neo-Nazis? Often find yourself in deep conversations about the state of the world or lost in thought about why Marxism never really caught on, and whether or not the beard was at least partly responsible?

Well then, youre probably a lefty, and according to one leading philosopher, thats also probably because youre an intellectual. Which he possibly seems to be inferring is a bad thing? Maybe?

Introducing Roger Scruton, or more precisely Sir Roger Vernon Scruton, a prominent British conservative and philosopher who is to hair as Boris Johnson is to politics: confusing.

Scruton passed a few years ago, but not before recording a lengthy interview about why intellectuals often turn out to be leftists. And were giving it a plug today because, well, when you watch it, youll understand why. Over to Scruton.

Ever since I became a conservative, which was in May 1968 in Paris, I hadnt a very clear idea of how to articulate it. All I knew was that when I looked down in the street and saw all these rowdy students throwing stones at policemen, I just said to myself, Whatever they believe, I believe the opposite.

The rowdy students Scruton is referring to were protestors at an event since dubbed May 68. It marked several months of unrest led by students protesting, among other things, American imperialism and police brutality two things Scruton presumably believes in (as conservatives go, he certainly wouldnt be the first). It also expanded to include workers, with rolling strikes demanding better wages.

Anyway Scruton continues: I somewhat arrogantly came to the conclusion that if you start thinking about politics in an intellectual way, you are likely to be on the left. Because that provides a systematic solution, an answer to the questions which puts it all in a system and also gives you a rather dignified and self-congratulatory place in the system.

But once youve started thinking, if you think a bit harder and longer about it, youll move back to what you would have been if you had never thought at all.

So there you have it folks. From the mouth of a leading conservative, all you need to do to adopt conservative beliefs is avoid intellectualism and, most importantly, not think about stuff.

Australia Releases National Quantum Strategy "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

Australias National Quantum Strategy was released last week, outlining the governments aims to guide and develop the local quantum industries.

This comes as part of the governments National Reconstruction Fund which will provide a targeted investment of 1 billion dollars for critical technologies like quantum.

The budget delivered minor gains and failed on the key issues "IndyWatch Feed National"

Make no mistake, the budget delivered last night by treasurer Jim Chalmers took on the shape of a major public relations exercise. It pretended to deliver to the battler. The gives are marginal and do little to tackle the rising cost of living.

You wouldnt think so if you believe the headlines across big media. These have generally lent a hand to the narrative of a responsible giveaway budget, which has also delivered a small budget surplus.

This isnt about having a go at Labor. A coalition government wouldve been much worse. Still, theres something to be said about being honest and calling it like it is. To do otherwise, is to go along with what is wrong and shore up the facade.

So, what is the reality behind this faade? The government coffers have been filled with a growth in the tax paid by wage earners, although their share of national income remains stagnant. The rest of it has come from tax collected from the soaring prices for fossil fuel exports and the domestic cost of petrol.

The graph above shows the relative and absolute rise in household income tax in recent years.

This has provided useful wiggle room to do the minimum to escape public angst. Everyone knows that the standing of government in this country and the major parties that operate within is quite low. The smoke and mirrors approach is designed to answer this by taking our attention from the reality that most of us are becoming worse off, and that the budget does little to turn this around.

Take the housing affordability crisis. Giving a $1.12 a day increase to Commonwealth Rent Assistance to those on Centrelink payments is not even going to scratch the surface on this problem. This same group of Australian citizens gets $2.85 a day, not even enough to cover a cup of coffee, to address living well below the poverty line. This requires $50 a day more. Without the support they need, a growing proportion of Australia will continue to have to make choices between paying the rent, eating, or seeing the doctor.

MP Ben Franklin embroiled in Nationals fracas for considering plum appointment "IndyWatch Feed National"

Locally-based Nationals MLC Ben Franklin is embroiled with infighting within his own party, according to SMH (Nine) and independent publisher Crikey.

Attempts to confirm the accuracy of the SMH story with Franklin were unsuccessful, however he did make a statement on his Facebook page on Monday night.

In 2019, Franklin ran against incumbent MP Tamara Smith (Greens) for the seat of Ballina on a large pork barrelling platform of promises, yet lost.

NSW deputy premier Paul Toole was dumped by the party Monday night, just one month after he was re-elected to the role. Dubbo MP, Dugald Saunders, is his replacement.

Regarding Franklin, SMH reports, The NSW Nationals are threatening to refer one of their own members to the corruption watchdog for considering a lucrative promotion in the new parliament despite senior party figures proposing another of their own MPs for the same job.

The report claims Franklin sparked fury in his party room for considering the plum job of upper house president, despite another Nationals MP, Wes Fang, also considering the job.  

Upper house presidential perks include a driver, staff and a salary on par with a government minister.

SMH says Franklin is a close friend to Minns, and is also the godfather to one of Minnss sons.

Demnach spricht sich die EU-Kommission unter ihrer Prsidentin Ursula von der Leyen dafr aus, Strafmanahmen gegen sieben Unternehmen aus der Volksrepublik einschlielich Hongkongs zu verhngen. Ihre Vermgenswerte in der EU sollen eingefroren werden. Mindestens vier der sieben Unternehmen sind bereits in den Vereinigten Staaten mit Sanktionen belegt worden.[1] Dazu gehren 3HC Semiconductors und King-Pai Technology aus Shenzhen. Whrend King-Pai Technology beschuldigt wird, Bauteile nach Russland zu liefern, die genutzt werden knnen, um elektronische Steuerungssysteme fr Lenkwaffen zu produzieren, wirft die EU 3HC Semiconductors vor, US-Produkte zu beschaffen, die nicht nach Russland exportiert werden drfen, und sie an russische Unternehmen weiterzuverkaufen. Zumindest in letzterem Fall erweisen sich die EU-Sanktionsplne damit de facto als bloe Handlangerdienste fr die USA.

Outbound Investment Screening

Die Sanktionsplne sind lediglich Teil eines umfassenderen Manahmenpakets, das die Bundesrepublik bzw. die EU zur Zeit in Planung haben und das der chinesischen Wirtschaft Schaden zufgen soll. So kndigte EU-Kommissionsprsidentin von der Leyen schon Ende Mrz an, sie wolle Beschrnkungen bei Investitionen europischer Unternehmen in der Volksrepublik einfhren. Ziel sei, die Anwendung europischen Know-hows durch chinesische Firmen einzuschrnken. Offiziell war von der Sorge die Rede, es knne genutzt werden, um die militrischen und nachrichtendienstlichen Fhigkeiten Chinas zu strken. Faktisch geht es einerseits um einen Beitrag der EU zum Versuch des Westens, den technologischen Aufstieg der Volksrepublik zu bremsen. Andererseits sollen damit Unternehmen aus der EU von weiteren Aktivitten in China abgehalten werden (german-foreign-policy.com berichtete [2]). Von der Leyen trug ihren Vorsto kurze Zeit nach ihrem Besuch in den USA vor, bei dem sie unter anderem von US-Prsident Joe Biden im Weien Haus empfangen worden war. Washington bereitet gegenwrtig die Einfhrung identischer Manahmen (Outbound Investment Screening) fr Investitionen in China, vor.[3]

High Court to hear appeal of an Iranian person seeking asylum detained for nearly a decade "IndyWatch Feed National"

The High Court is set to hear an appeal brought by an Iranian man who has been detained for nearly a decade while seeking asylum. The appeal will determine for the first time whether the Federal Court has the power to direct that a person be detained at a location in the community, rather than a detention centre.

The man bringing the appeal, who goes by the name Ned Kelly Emeralds, is represented by the Human Rights Law Centre. Ned arrived in Australia by boat from Iran in 2013 and has been detained since that time.

For two decades, the offshore detention policies of Australian governments have cruelly and arbitrarily discriminated against people seeking safety based on how they arrived. A maze of discriminatory laws enacted by successive governments has meant that people who arrived at the same time as Ned were either transferred to Regional Processing Countries, granted temporary protection visas or held in detention while their status was resolved.

The appeal will have important implications for hundreds of people in indefinite immigration detention. The average time spent by people in immigration detention has reached record levels, at 780 days. More than one hundred people have been in immigration detention for over five years.

The appeal also comes after the Albanese Government recently extended permanent protection to 19,000 people who arrived in Australia by sea before 2014.

The Human Rights Law Centre calls on the Albanese Government to recognise that all people have a right to permanent protection.

Ned Kelly Emeralds, who is preparing for his appeal to be heard, said: I have been kept in a cage and denied any possibility of release for nearly ten years. I hope that my case shows the powers that Ministers have over peoples lives if the Minister wants it, you can be locked up for a decade, sent to Nauru or given a permanent visa. But everyone deserves an equal chance to make a life in freedom.

Farhad Bandesh, an activist and artist who was detained on Manus Island, said: We fled our countries to find freedom and safety. Instead, Australian governments have built prison camps to torture us, keep us away from the Australian people and spread fear about us. It is time for this government to acknowledge our suffering and treat us with equality, dignity and respect. We are all human beings.

Aran Mylvaganam of the Tamil Refugee Council said: This case perfectly illustrates the arbitrariness and cruelty of Australias offshore detention regime people on the same boat could end up divided between Nauru or Manus, living in Australia or being locked in detention for a decade. Everyone deserves a single solution a permanent home in Australia.

Australian government is hit with class action lawsuit over Covid vaccines "IndyWatch Feed National"

A landmark Covid-19 vaccine injury class action lawsuit has been filed against the Australian government and the medicines regulator. The nation-wide suit, which reportedly has 500 members including three named applicants, seeks redress for those allegedly left injured or bereaved by the Covid-19 vaccines. One of the applicants who suffered a severe heart condition after getting the Pfizer jab is even claiming there was 'cover-up' during the vaccine rollout which hid the potential risks. The federal government, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and the Department of Health - in addition to a number of senior public servants - are all named as parties to the class action, which was filed in the New South Wales Federal Court. The named parties are accused of negligence in their approval and monitoring of Covid-19 vaccines, breach of statutory duty and misfeasance in public office. Instructing solicitor Natalie Strijland, of Brisbane law firm NR Barbi, said the action would argue the TGA caused considerable harm and damage by failing to regulate the COVID-19 vaccinations properly. The class action names three applicants, one of whom is 41-year old father-of-two Gareth O'Gradie. Mr O'Gradie, a teacher from Melbourne, was left with a 20-centimetre scar down his chest after developing severe pericarditis inflammation of the lining around the heart following his first Pfizer vaccination in July 2021. In February 2022 doctors performed open heart surgery to remove his the pericardial sac lining his heart.

The review, led by a Johns Hopkins University professor, argued that border closures had virtually zero effect on Covid mortality, reducing deaths by just 0.1 per cent. There has been a growing consensus that draconian restrictions have led to a rise in non-Covid deaths, thought to be people whose conditions worsened during the pandemic when they could not access healthcare. In the latest report, the researchers admit their review does not answer 'why' lockdowns didn't achieve their ultimate goal in saving lives but they float a number of explanations. They claimed the best explanation for differing Covid death rates in countries was 'differences in population age and health' and the 'quality of the health sector. But they could not rule out 'less obvious factors, such as culture, communication, and coincidences'. Covid deaths are also skewed by the volume of testing each country carries out, which many scientists have highlighted as the driving factor behind Britain's large toll.

Another Three Australian Army NH Industries MRH-90 Multi-Role Helicopters - A40-007, A40-039, A40-036 - Call into Rockhampton and Mackay Airports - Plus More! "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

On Wednesday 19 April, another three three Australian Army NH Industries MRH-90 Multi-Role Helicopters were spotted and noted calling into a couple of Central Queensland Airports.  They were identified as A40-007 and A40-039 which both called into Rockhampton Airport, and A40-036 which popped into Mackay Airport. 



A40-007 as "Bushman 81" arrived into Rockhampton Airport from the Oakey Army Aviation Centre before it then departed to Townsville.  In the afternoon, A40-039 as "Destrier 103" also arrived into Rockhampton Airport (as shown above) from Oakey then also departing to Townsville. 

Around the same time, A40-036 as "Pegasus 35" also flew up from Oakey to Mackay Airport before it too then departed to Townsville. 

Meanwhile, also on Wednesday 19 April, Australian Army marked (Helicorp) Leonardo S.P.A. Helicopters (Agusta) AW139 helicopter VH-YBG was flying as "Warhorse 234" and flew down from Townsville to Mackay Airport before it then returned to Townsville.

While as mentioned below, on Tuesday 4 April, fellow Army (Helicorp) AW139 helicopter VH-YBF as "Warhorse 239" landed at Emerald Airport from Townsville before it then departed to Oakey, Tamworth and Bankstown.  Perhaps end of lease???

TWO of the five suspects involved in the alleged piracy case involving the murder of the late Member for Nissan Charry Napto, appeared for mention before the National Court Judge.
The other three accused were not present for the hearing and therefore, Justice Ravunama Auka, adjourned the case.
Moses Gimus and Ronnie Ruga were present for the hearing, while, Malcolm Sawa Sahin, Richard Bunei and Benjamin Malese did not appear.
During the mention, state lawyer Lilly Jack, informed the court of the difficulty in bringing witnesses from distant areas to appear before the court to give evidence.
Jack will require more time to contact the witnesses and provide transportation to bring the witnesses to Buka National Courthouse.
Presiding Judge Ravunama Auka therefore, adjourned the case to today (9.05.23).
Justice Auka also apologized to the accused for missing the whole week last week due to the state not providing a representative to prosecute these outstanding matters before the National court.
The National Court Circuit resumed today. In the meantime, seven cases outstanding from 2021, three cases from 2022 and five fresh committals for 2023 has been adjourned to next National Court sitting.

Budget brings small relief to single mothers "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced changes to the parenting payment lifting the cut off for the youngest child from age 8 to 14.

It means an increase of about $176 a fortnight.

Currently, single parents get about $922 a fortnight.

After the youngest child reaches the cut off age, single parents move to Jobseeker with lower payments of about $744, along with the obligation to search for work.

It will cost the government about $1.9 billion dollars over four years, and provide an extra 57 000 single parents, most of them women, with more financial support.

The Wires Netta Finney spoke to CEO of Single Mother Families Australia, Terese Edwards, and single mum, Brenda, about the changes.

Australian Company Has Found Oil, Gas in Zimbabwe

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) An Australian-listed company exploring for oil and gas in Zimbabwe said Monday it has found deposits of both as well as helium in the Cabora Bassa Basin in the north of the country.

Invictus Energy said in a statement that results from an analysis of samples from drilling conducted last year confirmed the presence of light oil and rich natural gas-condensate, with condensate gas ratios estimated at between 30 to 135 barrels per million cubic feet.

The results also showed the presence of helium gas in commercial concentrations, the company said.

Helium is used in the production of semi-conductors and liquid crystal display (LCD) panels.

Invictus Energy is planning to drill another exploration well in the same area later this year.

There was no immediate comment from the Zimbabwean government on the find.

It could be years before Zimbabwe starts commercial production of any of the deposits. Neighboring Mozambique only started exporting liquefied natural gas last year after discovering reserves off its coast in 2010.

If youd told me at the start of 2020 that before the middle of the year, the streets of all of the worlds great cities would be empty and billions of people would be locked in their homes, sometimes for months on end, I would have told you that was unthinkable.

But thats the funny thing about unthinkable things. Theyre only unthinkable until unthinkable things happen, then theyre extraordinary, before theyre ordinary.

With that in mind, the notion that the United States of America might collapse under the weight of its own violence is also hard to imagine. Its been the worlds only superpower since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. But history tells us at least two things about great empires: They all, eventually, fall; and the rot almost always comes from within.

Over the weekend, there was yet another mass shooting in the US. A man aged in his 30s opened fire outside a shopping mall in the community of Allen, in the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. In a matter of minutes, eight people were dead, including at least three children. The shooter, an extremist with ties to right wing hate groups and white supremacy, was killed by police.

Twitter purchased earlier this year in service of free speech by the worlds richest man was soon awash with the blood of those children. Three different videos, all of them unedited, dominated the gore: the first showed the gunman opening fire at the mall; the second, with blood everywhere, zoomed in close on the victims and featured what looked like the brain matter of a small child on the footpath; the third video showed close-up footage of the dead gunmen, shot in the head by police, with a large pool of blood seeping from the back of his skull. More than 48 hours after the slaughter, the videos were still being widely tweeted.

New forex strategy promises gradual return to a floating currency in Papua New Guinea: IMF "IndyWatch Feed Niugini"

The recent decision by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to approve US$918 million (K3.2 billion) in new funding to Papua New Guinea is helping to fast-track a solution to the countrys chronic foreign exchange shortages. Business Advantage PNG spoke with Sohrab Rafiq, the IMFs new PNG representative, to learn more.

An International Monetary Fund (IMF) team will be in Port Moresby over the next few months to help the PNG government develop a jointly-agreed comprehensive reform roadmap for the countrys foreign exchange (FX) system. The roadmap, which will also involve the Bank of Papua New Guinea (BPNG) and the Department of Treasury is expected to be ready by 31 August 2023.

Sohrab Rafiq, the IMFs recently appointed PNG representative, tells Business Advantage PNG that solving PNGs FX shortage will remove the single biggest issue holding back business growth and foreign investment in the country.

In addition to fixing the FX problem, he says, the proposed roadmap will also include significant Central Bank reforms to promote economic growth.

The PNG government has already received an initial US$88.3 million (K310.9 million) in IMF funding. According to Rafiq, remaining funds will be spoon-fed to PNG over the next 38 months, following half-yearly reviews by the IMF.

ACT Government delays raising the age to 14, defying advice from Aboriginal, legal and human rights organisations "IndyWatch Feed National"

The ACT Government has been criticised for its failure to raise the age of criminal responsibility to 14 right away, with justice advocates saying the welfare of 12- and 13-year-old children cannot wait until 2025.

The ACT Government has today tabled a Bill that would see the age of criminal responsibility raised from 10 to only 12 years old, in a delayed process to eventually raise the age to 14 in July 2025 with exceptions.

Medical, legal, and human rights experts have been unequivocal in calling for governments to raise the age to at least 14 with no carve-outs. Yet the ACT has flagged that children accused of serious offences will continue to be subject to police investigation including strip-searches, being dragged through courts, and locked in prisons.

By keeping the age of criminal responsibility as low as 12 until 2025 and neglecting to protect all children from a harmful system, Chief Minister Andrew Barr and Attorney-General Shane Rattenbury have failed some of the ACTs most marginalised children. 

Prison has devastating impacts on childrens and young peoples health, development, mental health and wellbeing. Evidence shows that the earlier a child is locked up in jail, the more the child is at risk of being entrenched in the justice system and re-engaging with the system later in life. 

Instead of locking up kids in prison, Chief Minister Barr and the ACT Government must fund community-led solutions which are supported by evidence and keep our children and communities safe.

In the extremely rare instances when a child does something seriously wrong, its because theyve been let down and need our help. We have abundant evidence that locking up children causes ongoing harm for them and their families, and the whole community. The ACT Government is well aware of this evidence. Politicians have no excuse to sacrifice 12 and 13-year-old children for political expediency.

Lets be clear: by failing to raise the age to 14 urgently and without exception, the ACT Government is failing Aboriginal children. Aboriginal kids are over-represented at every stage of the system, from police to court to prison. The ACT imprisons Aboriginal children at 12 times the rate of non-Indigenous children. Its Aboriginal kids and families who will be most harmed by the governments refusal to fully accept the evidence about what works.

JOSEPH KINTAU ANOTHER CROOK IN THE HOTSEAT "IndyWatch Feed Niugini"


Joseph Kintau, the former MD/CEO of NAC, faced allegations and subsequent resignation in 2014 due to actions involving the awarding of a land lease and contracts. The NAC Board, led by Chairman Mal Lewis, initiated an investigation into these matters.

One of the allegations was related to the land lease of prime property across from Gateway Hotel, adjacent to the Air Niugini Head Quarters at 7mile. Kintau used his authority as MD/CEO to lease this land to Air Niugini for a period of 40 years at a rate of K3 million. This equated to K75,000 per year or K6,250 per month, significantly below the standard rate of K125 per square meter. As a result, NAC suffered substantial losses in land lease revenue.

Due to Air Niugini's development of the land and construction of a serviced apartment, terminating the lease has become difficult. Peter Neville has recently defended this lease and claimed that there are two parts to the development lease, suggesting it was a reasonable decision. However, the available facts and records contradict Peter Neville's assertion, indicating either his lack of understanding or an attempt to conceal the truth. European action against ISDS in the Energy Charter Treaty needs to be universal "IndyWatch Feed National"

May 9, 2023: An article from Project Syndicate reports that over the past year, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Luxembourg, Slovenia, and Denmark have all withdrawn from the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT), or announced their intention to do so. Italy left in 2016.  The ECT includes Investor-State Dispute Settlement ISDS) rules. These allow foreign energy investors to sue national governments for losses caused by policy changes. The  ECT can prevents countries from delivering on their commitment to meet the Paris Agreement targets and can also be used against plans to tax oil and gas companies windfall profits.

Yet while EU member states are leaving the ECT, a growing number of African countries, including The Gambia, Mali, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, and Eswatini, have been persuaded to join it. And while EU governments are protecting themselves from being sued through the ECT, developing country governments are being pressured  to put themselves at risk through bilateral investment treaties.

The ECT was set up in the early 1990s and its ISDS provisions were designed to protect western investments in fossil fuel industries in former Soviet-bloc countries. As of June 2022, at least 150 ISDS cases have been brought under the ECT.

Will tonights budget bring gain or pain? "IndyWatch Feed National"

On the eve of the federal budget, a great deal is being made of the expected $15 billion surplus, something that hasnt been seen for 15 years. How can this be when the demands on the governments responsibilities are rising, along with the gap between this and the revenue coming in? More on this later.

The details have not been public yet. But custom has been followed with some telling leaks. so far there are few gains and the promise of a lot of pain.

Even with some small improvements for the parenting payment, and a small increase in the Jobseeker base rate for those over 55, the rising poverty faced by those on social security will not be addressed. They will continue to fall further below the poverty line.

The bigger issue is the matter of the rising cost of living. A $4 billion package over four years is included in this budget. A small improvement in the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme will be provided. A change in the dispensing rules will make it possible for pharmacists to sell up to two months worth of certain medications under a single prescription.

Quite simply put, the hospital, that being the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, that has refused a life saving operation for a mother of two, Vicki Derderian, aged 47 should be sued.

Not only that, but also the persons responsible for this decision should also be charged criminally, never to practice medicine ever again.

The reason that Ms Derderians life is not being saved is stated by the hospital that it is because she has not taken a drug advertised as a COVID-19 vaccine.

Indonesian authorities must immediately and unconditionally release Papuans and those detained solely for their peaceful expressions, said Amnesty International Indonesia and Amnesty International USA following the guilty verdict and prison sentence against West Papua National Committee (KNPB) spokesperson, Victor Yeimo, in Jayapura.

On Friday 5 May, Yeimo was sentenced to eight months imprisonment due to his involvement in anti-racism protest in Papua on August 2019.

The fact that he and many Papuans have been arrested and detained for peacefully expressing their political opinion represents the states neglect on human rights protection, said the Amnesty International Indonesia Executive Director Usman Hamid.

At the same time, unfair trials are underway. In 2007, the Constitutional Court had revoked Article 155 of the Penal Code and today, the same article is being used against peaceful activists such as Viktor Yeimo. Is the law enforcement moving backward?

The Jayapura District Courts Panel of Judges convicted Yeimo of violating Article 155 of the Penal Code related to broadcasting or showing letters or pictures that contain expressions of feelings of hostility, hatred, contempt or humiliation against the government.

Previously, the Public Prosecutor charged Yeimo with Article 106 concerning treason, Article 110 Paragraph 1 concerning conspiracy to treason, Article 110 Paragraph 2 on preparing for treason, and Article 160 on sedition.

Whats been happening to Yeimo and other Papuan activists who spoke up is a form of arbitrariness, misdirection and discrimination, added Usman.

It will also send a message to other activists and protesters that dissent and peaceful expression of their views are not welcome.

According to Amnesty International Indonesias monitoring data from 2019 to 2022, at least 78 people in Papua were facing criminal allegation and prosecution for allegedly violating treason articles under the Penal Code.

These escalating efforts to silence and intimidate Papuan activists should alarm the US government, which has repeatedly looked to Indonesia as a regional example of democratic norms commitment to human rights principles, said Carolyn Nash, Asia Advocacy Director at Amnesty USA. 392. Environmental markets dont emerge spontaneously "IndyWatch Feed Qld"

There are quite a few mechanisms that can be used to try to change peoples behaviour in order to generate environmental benefits. These days, the most rapidly growing approach seems to be the creation of new markets for environmental goods.

Historically, the main mechanisms used in environmental policies have been providing information, providing payments, imposing regulations, and creating improved technologies. All these are still used, but Ive noticed that a lot of attention these days is being given to the use of markets.

Examples of markets that relate to the environment include: the SO2 pollution market in the US (now defunct), various markets for permits to emit CO2, markets for biodiversity offsets, and the Reef Credits market in Queensland. The Australian Government is developing a market for biodiversity certificates, under its Nature Repair policy.

Economists generally love markets, as they are often an efficient way to manage things, but environmental markets have some differences from the types of markets usually talked about in economics textbooks. Notably, unlike, say, the markets for agricultural products like wheat or sheep, environmental markets dont emerge spontaneously; they have to be created.

There are good reasons for that. When a farmer harvests a sack of wheat, it is clear who owns it the farmer. When the farmer sells the wheat, it is clear to both the buyer and the seller what is being sold, and its quality can readily be determined by the buyer. The process of selling it is easy and cheap to do. No wonder wheat has been bought and sold in local markets for thousands of years.

How about a market for nature conservation? Could it emerge spontaneously, without a government (or some other institution) intentionally creating it? Clearly not. If somebody implements a conservation project, who owns the benefits? Nobody, and everybody, depending on how you think about it. We can all take pleasure in knowing that some conservation benefits have been generated. We dont have to pay anyone to get that benefit, so why would we offer to pay? And what would a seller be selling, anyway? Intangible psychological benefits. Could a mythical buyer of these intangible benefits judge how good they are? Not easily. They probably dont get to look at the conservation project directly, and even if they do, they probably dont have the expertise to judge how good it...

CCS has been slow to take off due to the cost of capture and the limited salability of carbon dioxide as a product. Thirty-nine CCS facilities capture CO2 around the world today, totaling 45 million tons per year, or about one-tenth of one percent (0.1%) of industrial emissions produced globally.

The Environmental Protection Agency is working on a new rule that would set stringent limits on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from US power plants. Utilities would be required to retrofit existing plants with carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology or to switch to hydrogen fuel. Others call for the use of CCS to decarbonize heavy industry. But the cost of capture and the amount of CO2 that proponents say needs to be captured crush any ideas about feasibility.

Carbon capture and storage is the process of capturing carbon dioxide from an industrial plant before it enters the atmosphere, transporting it, and storing it for centuries to millennia. Capture may be accomplished by filtering it from combustion exhaust streams. Pipelines are proposed to transport the captured CO2. Underground reservoirs could be used for storage. For the last two decades, advocates have proposed CCS to reduce emissions from coal plants and steel, chemical, and other hard-to-decarbonize industries in order to fight human-caused climate change.

CCS has been slow to take off due to the cost of capture and the limited salability of carbon dioxide as a product. Thirty-nine CCS facilities capture CO2 around the world today, totaling 45 million tons per year, or about one-tenth of one percent (0.1%) of industrial emissions produced globally. Lowest building approvals in a decade

It was another very subdued report for building approvals in March, declining slightly further to a seasonally adjusted 12,686 for the month.

Clearly there's a major issue brewing in the largest capital cities as the Aussie population is set to gap upwards by 1 million plus. 

Greater Sydney saw the approvals of just 14,672 houses over the year to March 2023, with the number trending even lower as developers increasingly struggle to make projects work. 

There were a couple of brighter spots in the capital cities.

Across Greater Melbourne, where access to land supply is typically a little friendlier, detached house approvals may now have turned upwards.

Looking ahead, about  of the Build to Rent sector dwelling supply will also go to Melbourne, although this will take time to hit the market. 


In Brisbane there's a desperate shortage of housing, with anything decent under $1 million being snapped up in no time with multiple offers...except, that is, for development sites, which are often languishing without much competition. 

Unit approvals are at least on the rise again in Brisbane, after bottoming out in October 2022.

Potential budget cuts to Australian disability housing "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

Good news and difficult news. One of Australias largest special disability accommodation housing providers says a proposed crackdown on NDIS rorting is welcomed, but any funding cuts to disability accommodation would be disastrous. 

SDA Smart Homes welcomes news of a proposed task force cracking down on systemic issues within the National Disability Insurance Scheme of alleged rorting, including overcharging or creating false participants. 

But they warn that funding cuts in the Federal Budget to disability accommodation in the current housing market would be a disaster, especially in states such as Victoria suffering from shortages.

The NDIS forecasts that demand for Special Disability Accommodation (SDA) will increase by over 60% over the next seven years.

Forced migration can lead to loss of social support and increased vulnerability to psychological distress. This is a reality for thousands of refugees and asylum seekers in Australia with unstable visa conditions.  

The Wires Nicholas Powell spoke to Associate Professor at Murdoch University, Mary Anne Kenny, and Professor from the University of South Australia, Professor Nicholas Proctor, about the mental health of refugees and asylum seekers as they navigate through the uncertain processes of settling in Australia.

Black Peoples Union on King Charles III Coronation "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

The pomp and ceremony of King Charles IIIs coronation is over, but the spectacle has reignited debates about slavery, colonial legacies and republicanism. 

Many pledged their allegiance to the king, including PM Anthony Albanese.

This act of allegiance was described as crucial by members of the Australian government, but this act and the coronation has stirred up mixed emotions and responses in Australia among Indigenous and First Nations peoples, shedding light on the countrys colonial history.

AFTINET submission to the Implementation Agenda for the Strategic Economic Cooperation Arrangement (SECA) between Australia and Thailand "IndyWatch Feed National"

May 8, 2023: The Implementation Agenda for the Strategic Economic Cooperation Arrangement (SECA) between Australia and Thailand (SECA) will sit alongside the existing Thai - Australia FTA agreed in 2005, which is not being reviewed. Instead the strategy will develop new areas of cooperation for expanding trade and investment.

Our submission notes that the strategy makes no mention of human rights, labour rights or environmental standards, which were not included in the FTA. It argues that the strategy should include the Governments goals consisting of justice and equality, sharing the benefits of increased trade and investment, and the need to reduce carbon emissions,. The submission notes that Thailand is also involved in the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF). This is also not a traditional trade agreement. However, human rights, labour rights and environmental standards are included in the IPEF negotiating goals,

The submission provides evidence of deficits in both commitments and implementation of human rights and labour rights in Thailand. It suggests why and how both countries should make commitments to these standards. The submission recognises that Thailand may require cooperation and support to implement these standards over time, including specific support from Australias Official Development Assistance programs. Ultimately these and environmental standards should be included in the Thai-Australia FTA.

Amongst the appointed experts, peak climate hysteria appears to have been reached, with the unexpected cold snap we are experiencing.

Krakatoa exploded in mid-1883 and the micro-particle pollutants spread around the world causing unusual sunsets including as far away as Norway. SINCE last year, the Papua New Guinea Forest Authoritys (PNGFA) Project Acquisition branch has been working to acquire forest areas in Madang and around the country.

And in this process, the rights of the landowner have been trampled on.

Landowners in the Middle Ramu Block 3 Forest Management Area (FMA) are now very well aware of this acquisition drive.

We unknowingly assisted in the process thinking that we were assisting to speed up the process of the acquisition of our area for logging.

But we now realise that after obtaining landowner consent for an FMA logging project to occur in our areas, the officers involved in this acquisition do not put these projects on public tender.

Instead, they select a developer of their own choice and award our forest areas to the developer who entertains them.

These officers are in the process of acquiring Raikos Forest Management Area and Ramu Block 4 (Gama local level government) in Madang, through the same illegal process.

The Marape Government, through Rai Coast MP Kessy Sawang, Usino-Bundi MP Jimmy Uguro, Governor Ramsey Pariwa and Middle Ramu MP Harwai Kamdaru, must rein in and investigate these officers within the Forest Authority and question their acquisition process and (ulterior) motives.

These projects are within your constituencies.

Landowners are uneducated and dont have the financial capability to hire lawyers to fight their cases in court.

Proactive measures now will prohibit future illegal logging project acquisition from illiterate landowners.

US Congressional Democrats want ISDS removed from trade deals "IndyWatch Feed National"

May 8, 2023: Dozens of Democrat members of the House and Senate sent a letter on May 2, 2023, to US Trade Representative (USTR) Katherine Tai and Secretary of State Antony Blinken, asking the Biden administration to remove Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) provisions from existing and future trade and investment agreements.

They argued that ISDS disputes are handled not through the judicial system but by industry-friendly tribunals that have no set procedures, precedents, or standards of evidence and allow mistruths or exaggerations [to] go unpunished. These provisions tilt the playing field even further in favour of large corporations, the letter said, incentivizing offshoring and undermining the sovereignty of the United States and other governments.

President Biden committed during his presidential campaign not to include ISDS in any future trade agreements, and USTR Tai said early in her tenure that she would pursue a trade agenda in line with that commitment.

However, the lawmakers believe ISDS should be removed from existing agreements as well, because large multinational corporations are weaponizing ISDS to benefit their own interests at the expense of workers, consumers, and small businesses globally. For example, they said, governments in Latin America have been ordered by ISDS tribunals to pay close to $28 billion to corporations, with far more in pending ISDS claims simply for putting in place sound public policy to protect the environment and the health and economic well-being of their communities.

The lawmakers therefore called on the Biden administration to investigate and pursue an effective path to removing consent to ISDS arbitration by the US and our treaty partners in existing bilateral investment treaties and free trade agreements. Noting that ISDS liability was largely removed in the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement, they also urged the White House to ensure that the Americas Partnership for Economic Prosperity it is negotiating with 11 countries in the Caribbean and Latin America does not include ISDS provisions and to address such provisions if and when it updates FTAs already in place with eight of those countries.

Will and should the Voice referendum succeed? "IndyWatch Feed National"

Referendums in Australia are notoriously tricky to succeed. You need a majority of votes in a majority of states, for a yes vote to get up. In Australian history, only 8 out of 44 referendums have succeeded.

We remember the failed 1999 attempt at a republic. The last referendums succeeding in Australia were in 1977 when Australians voted yes on the following issues: Senate Casual Vacancies, allowing residents of Australian territories to vote in referendums, and introducing 70 as the retirement age for judges.

Will the coming referendum be the next successful one?

Very soon well vote on an alteration to the Australian Constitution to allow an indigenous Voice to the Federal Parliament, and Government, on matters impacting on indigenous Australians. Not a particularly radical proposal, and something that should have been in place a long time ago.

Much of corporate Australia, and leaders in civil society support a yes Vote for the Voice. Should we, the overwhelming majority of Australians go along with this?

Leading the opposition appears to be role for the News Ltd Media, and the usual rag-tag bunch of parliamentary reactionaries, and their hangers on. This does not deny there are many Indigenous Australians who want a no, as they consider a Voice limited, preferring Treaty. In their view, the referendum is a distraction.

A considerable proportion of Frist Nation Australia is opposed to the referendum for genuine reasons mostly ignored by the media

At this point it appears the yes vote has the stronger support...

ANSWER: The FedNow is the system that will be for CBDC and the elimination of all paper money. However, they will not cancel the dollars in July not just yet. This is why they are rushing 5G before testing to see if the radiation is harmful. This is all about total control and 100% tax collection. Scott Morrison and Australias Lobby Complex "IndyWatch Feed National"

The former Australian Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, has been somewhat of an absentee in the Federal seat of Cook. Since losing the May 2022 election, he has been aggressively chasing up contacts and deals on the consultancy circuit, bellyaching about the usual talking points: the gruesome China menace; defence matters; and, just to round it off for good measure, additional iterations of the China menace.

In March, he proved particularly jingoistic, telling Sky News Australia that Canberra needed, not only its own capability but the interlocking alignments and alliances that actually provide the counterbalance to the threat. This was code for a further renting of Australian sovereignty, a concept that has become increasingly irrelevant.

Morrisons movement to the world of the consultant-lobbyist is a seamless one, unsurprising given his innate incapacity to understand the broader public interest. It is even questionable whether he ever left that cosmos, being very much a colluder and conniver in murky, unaccountable transactions forged in a mates world.

From the other side of the policy aisle, he engaged the Liberal Party lobby firm Crosby Textor in 2005 during his disastrous stint as director of Tourism Australia. Crosby Textor also gained much during Morrisons prime ministership, having its advisors, including Yaron Finkelstein, posted to positions in the Prime Ministers office. For Finkelstein, access to the PM was plum and exclusive.

If recent reports are are correct, Morrison is staying true to form, heading to work for a UK business with ties to the defence sector. As one source put it, He wont go until it is locked in but it is fair to say he is actively seeking life after politics. That same source also revealed that the defence business was involved in the AUKUS space.

When asked to comment on the issue, the habitually mendacious MP for Cook claimed to be very engaged with things in my local electorate and enjoying being back in my local community. Such enjoyment was evidently being shared alongside his role as advisory board member for the US-based Hudson Institutes China Centre, a position he was appointed to in December last year.

The Office of the Regional Member for Bougainville has conveyed his shock at the news of the untimely death of ABG Member of the House of Representatives and Member for South Bougainville Veterans, the Late Hon. Thomas Tari, MHR who passed away at the Port Moresby General Hospital at 10pm on Friday, 5th May 2023.

We have lost a great leader and a father figure whose simplicity and honesty inspired the people. His vast knowledge of the Bougainville Conflict earned him the mandate to serve the interests of veterans across South Bougainville in the Bougainville House of Representatives (BHOR).
He served our Region with great distinction, and the void created by his death will be very difficult to fill, the Regional Member said.

Mr Tsiamalili conveyed his heartfelt condolences to members of Mr Taris family and offered prayers that the Lord would grant them comfort.

Thomas Tari will be remembered for his sense of humour, punctuality, candidness, charisma, andlevel- headedness. He was an intelligent veteran, a patriotic citizen, and an outstanding peace negotiator during the Bougainville Conflict. I pray that the Lord will give comfort to his family at this difficult time and for the eternal solace of his departed soul., he said. Mr Tsiamalili described Mr Tari as a champion of peace.

He played a central role in the search for an enduring peace during the Bougainville crisis. Mr Tari featured prominently amongst those that negotiated the Bougainville Peace Agreement and advocated strongly for a process national dialogue.

The Regional Member said that many in Bougainville had benefited from his guidance and wise counsel.

Notably, he deeply appreciated Papua New Guinea and Bougainvilles political history. He understood the need for national dialogue for achieving peace. To the very end he championed justice, democracy, and inclusive development for Bougainville, he said.

Mr Tsiamalili said that the people of Bougainville will remember the Late Thomas Tari, MHR, for his service to humanity and the many lives he touched during his time on earth.

All of us will dearly miss him. We earnestly pray that the people of South Bougainville and Buin, including the immediate family of Mr Tari find solace and comfort in the Lord Himself during this moment of profound grief.

Papua New Guinea (PNG) has joined 15 other Commonwealth realms in celebrating the Coronation of King Charles III with a significant ceremony held at the Sir Hubert Murray Stadium in Port Moresby tonight (06.05.2023)

Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape in welcoming Charles III as the King for the Commonwealth countries said King Charles III has been part and parcel of the growth and development of and has  had a long-standing relationship with Papua New Guinea over the years.

He first visited the country in 1966 as the Prince of Wales and was also present to officially open the House of Legislation in 1984.

PM Marape in his speech says it is a historic event to witness the Coronation of a monarch after 70years when the last Coronation was held in 1953.

He says he is privileged to have met and spoken to  King Charles III knowing that he has at heart the Commonwealth nations throughout the world.

Protesters in Port Sudan Call to Expel UN Envoy

May 4, 2023 (PORT SUDAN) A group of demonstrators largely made up of former regime supporters held a protest in the Red Sea capital calling for UN envoy Volker Perthes to leave Sudan, before storming his office.

Perthes has been operating from Port Sudan since the eruption of armed conflict in Khartoum between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces on April 15, 2023.

The demonstration began at the Alumni Club and ended at the Coral Hotel, where the UN envoys headquarters is located. Protesters chanted slogans against the UNs involvement in Sudanese affairs and demanded the envoys departure.

Eyewitnesses told Sudan Tribune that the majority of protesters were affiliated with the former regime, while others belonged to the tribal body of the Supreme Council of Beja Chiefdoms and independent groups.

Sources also reported the involvement of remnants of the former regime in the Red Sea State, who had previously organized several protests in Khartoum after the October 25, 2021 coup against the UN envoy.

Sayed Abu Amna, the spokesperson for the Beja tribal body, has refuted any connection between the council and the group that stormed the residence of the UN envoy in Port Sudan.

The Supreme Council is a peaceful civilian organization that does not condone violent means and respects the United Nations and its institutions and missions, Abu Amna added.

He pointed out that their objection to Volkers presence in the region was due to his exclusion of the regions representative in the political process, which was limited to a few fictitious individuals and entities that do not represent the diverse peoples of Sudan.

The UN envoy is part of a facilitation panel that includes the IGAD and the African Union. The role of the Trilateral Mechanism is limited to facilitating the political process, which is led and run by Sudanese parties.
