Dying to Know campaign empowering Australians to live and die well 4YOU 98.5FM Capricorn Community Radio

Voluntary assisted dying, and palliative care can work well together, but some people are still excluded from the choice of a legal and supported voluntary death. And this is the reason behind Dying to Know, a campaign held every August to empower Australians at all stages of life to live and die well. A national webinar was held on August 2 2023, and additional events will run across Australia for the rest of the month.

The campaign aims to encourage tough conversations about possible courses of action for future planning. Radio Adelaides Nicky Page spoke with organizers of the event including Dr Linda Swan CEO of GoGentle Australia, to find out more

New research unveils one in five Aussies worry about being able to put food on the table 4YOU 98.5FM Capricorn Community Radio

Inflation, sky-high rent and rising interest rates are affecting everyday Australians with new research from Orange Sky revealing more than a quarter (27%) have had to sacrifice basic living essentials due to the crisis. One in five (20%) Aussies say they are worried about being able to put food on the table.

Homelessness can impact anyone, and all it can take is failing to pay rent once, a rental increase, the loss of employment, or an unfortunate circumstance for the cycle to start. It means people who never thought they would be in a position of financial struggle, are reaching out for support.

Orange Sky offers free mobile laundry service for those experiencing homelessness along with genuine and non-judgemental conversations on shifts across Australia. This Homelessness Week (6-13 August), Orange Sky is encouraging Australians to register for The Sudsy Challenge, to raise awareness and funds for people doing it tough.

Fostering dialogue about the Indigenous Voice to Parliament 4YOU 98.5FM Capricorn Community Radio

As community momentum builds about the upcoming referendum on the Voice to Parliament, panel discussions and community events are being held across states and territories to dispel misinformation and shed light on Indigenous voices.

Universities also play a vital role to provide spaces for debate, knowledge-sharing and clarity on key issues that impact Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.

The Australian National University (ANU) held one such panel discussion, and had over 20 universities and institutions across Australia streamed into the event. The Wires Aryana Mohmood spoke with Vice Chancellor and President of the Australian National University (ANU), Professor Brian Schmidt, about what was discussed on the night and how discussions surrounding the Voice to Parliament need to change.

Hi guys, Im from WA. Thinking of travelling through Cairns and surrounds around December. Would that be an ok time to travel there? Cairns

Firstly, let me apologise for asking something that has probably been asked before. But I have done plenty of research and am fully aware that May to October is dry (peak) season in Cairns.

And while, December to March is the main wet season, December seems to be the driest month of the four, by average rain. Plus, my intention is to experience the tropical wonders whilst avoiding hordes of tourists everywhere by going in the off-peak season.

I intend to be there roughly for 3-4 nights. And on my bucket list are 1) Daintree Rainforest 2) Kuranda Scenic Railway and Sky Cable & 3) driving to Babinda and Mt Bellenden Ker.

Wanted to speak to a local and get the best weather advice :)

Shall I be ok in December or should I put it off to next winter? And any special things / animal dangers to be aware of during xmas holidays? Also is hotel / Air BnB accommodation cheaper during off-peak season as well?

Cheers! Thanks in advance!

Gifting less fortunate families this year Cairns

Can any locals point me in the direction or digital direction (lol) to maybe a Facebook page/group/phone number -- somewhere where I can donate personally to a kid or family struggling to afford a birthday or Christmas gift for their kids. I have a couple things saved up and I decided not to sell them or throw them out.

I'm a young adult male, I've never really donated except for lifeline bin drop-offs when I was younger, but either send me a DM or comment on here, I'm trying to help someone in need this year

Another South Australian council abandons January 26 events 4YOU 98.5FM Capricorn Community Radio

January 26 has become a date of growing contention with many recognising it is not all sun, surf and kicking back

A string of South Australian councils have turned their back on official Australia Day celebrations with some opting to shift the date of citizenship ceremonies citing reasons from logistics to culture, inclusion and respect for Traditional Owners.

Adelaide Hills Council is the latest in SA to make the move, stating they will not conduct citizenship ceremonies, confer awards or support events on 26 January from now onwards.

pregnancy and parental leave: targets for workplace discrimination 4YOU 98.5FM Capricorn Community Radio

Pregnant women and new parents still remain a target of workplace discrimination despite decades-old legislation making it unlawful.

Researchers are calling for major change as a new study from University of South Australia reveals 60 percent of new mothers returning to work say their opinions are often ignored, and they feel excluded.

This follows  2014s Supporting Working Parents: Pregnancy and Return to Work National Review, with current findings demonstrating little to no shift in the situation.

In an age of progression what is still happening in our workplaces? And where do changes need to happen?

Keycard collection options Cairns

Hi all. I'm a Darwin boy, and own an apartment in the Harbour Lights complex. I'm thinking of moving over to Cairns next year, but before then, I'm looking for options for guests to pick up their key card (no letterbox at the building). More so like a hotel layout than an apartment. Of course, when I move over, I can drop the keycard to guests myself.

Does anyone know of any options that may exist. Here in Darwin, I'm aware that some hostels offer a "lockbox wall" where guests can collect their key cards 24hrs. In exchange, the owner of the apartment will pay the hostel an annual fee. There's also the option of 24hr shops. I'm in the process of proactively contacting businesses. If you're aware of any options, or anything novel that I haven't thought of - please hit me up.

Kind regards, Ben
