The link between the sea sponge loss and climate change 4YOU 98.5FM Capricorn Community Radio

Recent studies from ISME Communications reveal that the rise of sea temperatures are causing sea sponges to lose important microbes that lead to necrotic sponges.

Sea sponges play a crucial role in the coral reef ecosystem; they detoxify, collect bacteria and process chalcogens. Some species of sea sponges have even been wiped out in certain areas due to climate change impacting the sea temperatures, thus affecting certain species and climates of certain countries.

Getting Accommodation In Cairns Under Working Holiday Visa? Cairns

Hello people of Cairns!

I am hoping that you could provide me with some insights/guidance to a few concerns of mine.

Im a Canadian who in a few months is planning to move to Australia for a working holiday visa. I spent quite a bit of time looking around and researching places around the country and I think Cairns would be a really incredible place to try to live in. I'm excited by how absurdly different it is from where Im coming from, especially in terms of climate haha. Im sure it will be a challenge in many ways, but Im willing to give it a go!

That being said, I guess my biggest concern would be my accommodation in Cairns.

Because I will be completely new to Australia, I will have no rental history here and as well as no job or income that I can show right away. How big of an issue is this for me in Cairns in particular?

Reading some previous posts, it seems like you guys are having a rental/housing issue. This makes me really concerned that Ill be arriving there and have no options/no one will accept me given my condition.

When I got my first rental apartment here at home, even though I had limited work or rental experience, my parents were able to be my guarantors. As such, I really had no issues finding a place to live. Since then Ive had years worth of rental history, but Im assuming this would be irrelevant in Australiaif not please let me know. I also dont know if I would be able to place my parents as guarantors this time around when they arent even in the country or even have an Australian bank account. Im doubtful, but would this be possible?

So basically how dire is my situation? Would you suggest I AirBNB for the first few weeks? Beyond that, are flat mates my only realistic long term option? If it is even possible, what steps do I need to take if I am completely set on renting out my own place?

Just for more info, I would say $350/week would be around the max of what I would be okay with.

And to end things off, as a final general question, do you guys think Im making the right decision? Maybe Im being too nave to how things are over there. Is Cairns a good place for someone wishing to pursue a WHV?

Thanks and looking forward to any help! And if I do end up coming, Im sure Ill be posting many more questions and comments in this subreddit in the future

Doctor waiting times & crime Cairns

Hi all,

Were looking to relocate to Cairns in the coming months. I lived there for a decade from 2004 before a move to Sydney so know the general area, but its been 9 years since I lived there.

Plan is to move to the beaches - Trinity or Kewara. Other than the obvious rental crisis that can be found everywhere at the moment, I was hoping to get some feedback on general crime levels and doctor waiting time (we have a 14month old).

Feedback would be greatly appreciated before we commit one way or the other.

Two crocs mostly comforting but three's bit of a crowd tyto tony

Third crocodile seen lately in the Town Common Conservation Park cause for bit of a rethink. Above all it shatters presumption that there was just the one biggish Saltie moving through several lagoon viewing areas. Now ... who knows how many - and exactly where? Last year's consistently high water levels, continuing through 2023 so far may have encouraged crocs, big fish and turtles to stick around. The conditions have also been perfect for expansive growth of bulrushes and reeds, thus creating extra cover in the lagoons. This all may change if the forecast but uncertain El Nino arrives this year rather than next. As always, we must wait and see. Stepping carefully meantime.

Place renaming crucial in upholding First Nations heritage and culture 4YOU 98.5FM Capricorn Community Radio

Last week saw the end of a 10-year battle over the naming of Queenslands World Heritage listed Fraser Island now known as Kgari, officially restoring the name used by traditional owners for more than 60 thousand years.

Local Butchulla people and Australians nation-wide celebrated the landmark change, and the latest in several decades of re-naming events across Australia which acknowledge Indigenous heritage and connection to place.

However, place-name restoration is often a complex issue. So, what determines a place-name change and what can this mean in the broader intricacies of cultural significance?

Amazon Frogbit: A Community Organisers Story CAFNEC

Every morning, as I set out for a peaceful walk with my furry companion, little did I know that a small aquatic plant would leave a lasting impact on me. It all began when I noticed the vibrant green patches floating on the surface of the nearby creek. Curiosity got the better of me, and I soon discovered that these delicate plants were Amazon frogbit.

With each passing day, as I strolled along the creek, I couldnt help but observe the expanding presence of the frogbit. The once tranquil water now became partially covered by dense mats of this invasive species. It was both fascinating and concerning to witness its rapid spread.

As I walked, I couldnt ignore the ecological changes that accompanied the frogbit invasion. The sunlight struggled to penetrate the thick mats, casting a shadow over the underwater world. Native aquatic plants that once thrived were now scarce, their beauty and importance diminished.

Canadian Visiting Cairns

Hi there! Avid scuba diver coming to visit this Aug.

Please let me know if there is anything else I should be doign while visiting Cairns. It's also my schnapps birthday when I am visiting - any special suggestions?

I have the following scheduled:

Botanical gardens Liveaboard (5 days) & additional day of diving Fitzroy island Flight over GBR Trinity Beach

I would really like to see the rainforest, but not huge into travel with large groups :)

Thank you in advance!

Bike stolen, filed police report. What now? Cairns

My bike was stolen by some junkies on Saturday just outside Cairns shopping centre, I've filed a report but the bike is very generic looking, is there anyway I can personally see the security videos from the time at the shopping centre???

Has anyone seen frilled-neck lizards around? Cairns

Hey, everyone. I posted the same question to the Darwin sub a couple weeks back - but since frillies are technically within the northern Queensland range as well, figured Id ask now that Im in Cairns. Had anyone seen any frillies lately? Not necessarily in the city, obviously.

(Bonus ask how about cassowaries?)

Holiday Help Cairns

Hey Everyone. My Wife, 2 year old and I will be coming on Holiday to Cairns later this year from VIC. We are only there 4 days. Will we need a car or taxis, public transport from airport and getting around etc easy enough without. Just hoping to hear from locals or people who have been on holiday in this situation. We are staying at the Cairns Colonial Club if that helps with opinions.

Gunfire just now!?! 5-6 shots, 7am, sounded like a car speeding away also? Anybody else hear that? Cairns

As title suggests. Sounded like 'pop....pop....POP...pop pop pop..... vvvrrrroooooom. May have been 2 diff calibres? Echoed across town pretty loudly since it's so peaceful and quiet at 7am on a Sunday. Anybody know what went down??

Location hard to ascertain; I'm up whitfield/brinsmead way and it sounded like maybe manunda/city direction? Definitely wasn't a car backfiring anyway. Oh shit and there's one more for finality as I edit this!

Getting Dangerous Geriatrics Off The Road? Cairns

What is a fair way, to discern, getting old people off the road, that are no longer fit to safely operate a vehicle?

I ride a motorbike, and I am sick to shit with dealing with a 'once a day /once a ride' near miss with old people /seniors, that don't even seem to realise they've just A) Cut into my lane, B) Pulled out at a T intersection me nearly T-Boning them, then waved me off like nothing (Mount Sheridan) C) Terrifyingly Vacant In Car Parks D) Pulled out of a car park without checking for oncoming traffic E) Looking for a park in town, without indicating, then cutting from left lane to centre park F) Doing 20km/h under literally everywhere, then speeding on residential streets.

Had enough.
Fuck ya'll old bitches!
