The link between the sea sponge loss and climate change "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

Recent studies from ISME Communications reveal that the rise of sea temperatures are causing sea sponges to lose important microbes that lead to necrotic sponges.

Sea sponges play a crucial role in the coral reef ecosystem; they detoxify, collect bacteria and process chalcogens. Some species of sea sponges have even been wiped out in certain areas due to climate change impacting the sea temperatures, thus affecting certain species and climates of certain countries.

Getting Accommodation In Cairns Under Working Holiday Visa? "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

Hello people of Cairns!

I am hoping that you could provide me with some insights/guidance to a few concerns of mine.

Im a Canadian who in a few months is planning to move to Australia for a working holiday visa. I spent quite a bit of time looking around and researching places around the country and I think Cairns would be a really incredible place to try to live in. I'm excited by how absurdly different it is from where Im coming from, especially in terms of climate haha. Im sure it will be a challenge in many ways, but Im willing to give it a go!

That being said, I guess my biggest concern would be my accommodation in Cairns.

Because I will be completely new to Australia, I will have no rental history here and as well as no job or income that I can show right away. How big of an issue is this for me in Cairns in particular?

Reading some previous posts, it seems like you guys are having a rental/housing issue. This makes me really concerned that Ill be arriving there and have no options/no one will accept me given my condition.

When I got my first rental apartment here at home, even though I had limited work or rental experience, my parents were able to be my guarantors. As such, I really had no issues finding a place to live. Since then Ive had years worth of rental history, but Im assuming this would be irrelevant in Australiaif not please let me know. I also dont know if I would be able to place my parents as guarantors this time around when they arent even in the country or even have an Australian bank account. Im doubtful, but would this be possible?

So basically how dire is my situation? Would you suggest I AirBNB for the first few weeks? Beyond that, are flat mates my only realistic long term option? If it is even possible, what steps do I need to take if I am completely set on renting out my own place?

Just for more info, I would say $350/week would be around the max of what I would be okay with.

And to end things off, as a final general question, do you guys think Im making the right decision? Maybe Im being too nave to how things are over there. Is Cairns a good place for someone wishing to pursue a WHV?

Thanks and looking forward to any help! And if I do end up coming, Im sure Ill be posting many more questions and comments in this subreddit in the future

Plan is to move to the beaches - Trinity or Kewara. Other than the obvious rental crisis that can be found everywhere at the moment, I was hoping to get some feedback on general crime levels and doctor waiting time (we have a 14month old).

Feedback would be greatly appreciated before we commit one way or the other.

Two crocs mostly comforting but three's bit of a crowd "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

Third crocodile seen lately in the Town Common Conservation Park cause for bit of a rethink. Above all it shatters presumption that there was just the one biggish Saltie moving through several lagoon viewing areas. Now ... who knows how many - and exactly where? Last year's consistently high water levels, continuing through 2023 so far may have encouraged crocs, big fish and turtles to stick around. The conditions have also been perfect for expansive growth of bulrushes and reeds, thus creating extra cover in the lagoons. This all may change if the forecast but uncertain El Nino arrives this year rather than next. As always, we must wait and see. Stepping carefully meantime.

Place renaming crucial in upholding First Nations heritage and culture "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

Last week saw the end of a 10-year battle over the naming of Queenslands World Heritage listed Fraser Island now known as Kgari, officially restoring the name used by traditional owners for more than 60 thousand years.

Local Butchulla people and Australians nation-wide celebrated the landmark change, and the latest in several decades of re-naming events across Australia which acknowledge Indigenous heritage and connection to place.

However, place-name restoration is often a complex issue. So, what determines a place-name change and what can this mean in the broader intricacies of cultural significance?

Australia's population revised up by +50,000 "IndyWatch Feed Qld"

Rapid population growth

As noted in the previous post, Australia's population has been revised up, with estimated population growth running faster than previously believed.

The rebound in population has been electric.

The ABS reported its December quarter estimates which showed annual population growth at very high levels in New South Wales (+138,000), Victoria (+137,700), Queensland (+116,600), and Western Australia (+62,700).

Total population growth in 2022 was close to +500,000, despite a surprisingly big drop in the estimated natural growth of the population.

That's less than, say, Canada, but it's extremely strong growth for Australia.

Amazon Frogbit: A Community Organisers Story "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

Every morning, as I set out for a peaceful walk with my furry companion, little did I know that a small aquatic plant would leave a lasting impact on me. It all began when I noticed the vibrant green patches floating on the surface of the nearby creek. Curiosity got the better of me, and I soon discovered that these delicate plants were Amazon frogbit.

With each passing day, as I strolled along the creek, I couldnt help but observe the expanding presence of the frogbit. The once tranquil water now became partially covered by dense mats of this invasive species. It was both fascinating and concerning to witness its rapid spread.

As I walked, I couldnt ignore the ecological changes that accompanied the frogbit invasion. The sunlight struggled to penetrate the thick mats, casting a shadow over the underwater world. Native aquatic plants that once thrived were now scarce, their beauty and importance diminished.

Activist blocking logging at Boambee State Forest near Coffs Harbour "IndyWatch Feed National"

The koala in NSW is predicted to become extinct by 2050. In response the Great Koala National Park (GKNP) was proposed and in 2020 the Department of Planning Industry and Environments (DPIE) identified 55,000 hectares of State Forests for addition to existing National Parks as the Great Koala National Park.

At the time the North East Forest Alliance (NEFA) spokesperson Dailan Pugh welcomed the news saying Its a step in the right direction.

During the NSW election the Labor Party committed $80 million to establish the GKNP which would connect 175,000 hectares of state forests with existing national parks, creating a nature reserve of more than 300,000 hectares according to the ABC

However, in the meantime the NSW Forestry Corporation, a government agency, continues to heavily log areas that are proposed for the GKNP. Local communities have, and continue, to actively block their logging attempts of these native forests.

Boambee State Forest on the western edge of Coffs Harbour, that is proposed to be part of the GKNP, is today being blocked from logging by activist Ella, a forest protector, who is 100 feet up a tree in a secured tree-sit in Boambee State Forest.

Whistleblowing amendments an important first-step "IndyWatch Feed National"

Initial amendments to Australias federal public sector whistleblowing law, the Public Interest Disclosure Act, are a welcome step towards much-needed comprehensive reform, Australias leading whistleblowing experts said today.

The Human Rights Law Centre, Griffith University and Transparency International Australia said they were pleased the Government and all parties had listened to their joint submission to the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee about significant problems with the initial bill, and made substantial improvements, now accepted by the Senate.

The Public Interest Disclosure Amendment (Review) Bill implements five aspects of reform one in full and four in part of the 21 elements outlined in Protecting Australias Whistleblowers: The Federal Roadmap, published last year by the three organisations.

Alongside the pending establishment of the National Anti-Corruption Commission,  Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus KC has committed to a second, wider phase of PID Act reform later this year. The government has also agreed to consult on the establishment of a whistleblower protection authority, with a discussion paper expected in the coming months.

Kieran Pender, Senior Lawyer at the Human Rights Law Centre, said:

By exposing human rights violations and government wrongdoing, whistleblowers make Australia a better place. But our whistleblower protections framework has fallen behind global standards; too often Australian whistleblowers are punished, not protected.

The Attorney-General is to be commended for resuming the journey towards a better whistleblowing framework, having led the initial enactment of the PID Act over a decade ago. We also applaud the work of the Greens and Coalition Senator Paul Scarr in helping ensure major improvements to this initial bill.

Clancy Moore, CEO of Transparency International Australia said:

These initial technical changes will start to breathe life back into federal whistleblower protections, in tandem with the Albanese Governments historic success in establishing Australias long awaited national anti-corruption commission.

We welcome the Governments commitment to fully overhaul the PID Act in coming months, and stand ready to assist with making protections simpler, more comprehensive and more consistent for anyone who blows the whistle.

Compliance: The Final Straw "IndyWatch Feed National"

Compliance: The Final Straw

By Steven Strong

15/06/23

The world of today is littered with half-truths, secret agendas, omissions and vilification for any who do not comply. The media and government agencies in all their multi-various forms no longer tolerate criticism, and any that complain will immediately be labelled a conspirator at best, and perhaps even a traitor. Wherever we look or listen it is all about blame, fear mongering and uncertainty.

The most recent roll-call of people, places and events on this planet is no less than tragic and most likely, lethal. It is all about making money and war, whether the spokesperson be Trump, Biden, Boris, Putin, Sco-Mo or Albanese, anything else is an incidental afterthought. Over the last decade wars have been waged in the Ukraine, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Sudan and Yemen along with many other slightly less brutal internal conflicts, and all the way along humming in the background is the incessant talk of a global escalating conflict in Taiwan. At a global macro-level, the planet is echoing to the sounds of explosions and aggression, but believe it or not it gets no better at the personal and individual level. There is a silent turmoil and outrage taking place in every location and within all inhabitants of this planet that is far more dangerous and...

The lies of manufacturers and reviewers on Solid State Drives "IndyWatch Feed National"

What's the BEST drive for gaming?

What drive is for 'content' creators, you know OnlyFans?

What SSD is best for workstation type loads?

Is 7300MB per second too slow for my games?

There are many misconceptions and 'lies' used to promote a manufacturer's wares, in order to be the sales kings of the industry.

It's a bit like reading an automotive manufacturer's fuel economy figures which can even be 30% less than in the real world.

Unfortunately many so called tech reviewers also have little to no idea, where all they're doing is supporting the advertising babble.

"What's the best gaming SSD in 2023?" could be answered in a simple line being: The same one as in 2020?

There are other more crucial specifications that are deliberately not focused on such as longevity, endurance, or even how long can the maximum speed be kept for, or a more real world use case scenario that 99% of the computing population does, where the speed of random read and writes are most important.

One of the better explanations out there is presented in this video:

Donald Trump case is about which faction of Wall Street will dominate "IndyWatch Feed National"

Contributed by Joe Montero

Donald Trump has finally been arrested and charged with criminal offenses and faces 37 counts of having committed federal crimes. This is over the theft of sensitive classified documents. Not surprisingly, Trump protests his innocence.

We most certainly enter a plea of not guilty, his lawyer said in the Miami court.

The defence rests on a counter accusation of victimisation. Trump alleges that he is the victim of a conspiracy hatched by the deep state, because he is popular, really won the last presidential election, and will win the one in 2024 easily. The implication of these allegations is that the deep state wants to stop him.

Its not as crazy as some would have it. In a nation where the faith in the political system and those who represent it has plummeted, Trumps words strike a chord. This is something that many of his critics with a voice to be heard conveniently ignore or fail to understand.

Photo from AP: Donald Trump in Miami

Trumps strategy is clever, and it might just propel him into the White house once again.

Another mistake made by many of his critics is the illusion that American law is the defender of justice and applies. Tell this to poor and non-white Americans. The yare the ones who feel the rough end of a justice system weighted against them.

Civil rights lawyer Alec Karakatsanis observed in an astringent Yale Law Journal piece a few years ago, that the USs brutal punishment bureaucracy unfairly disadvantages poor people and people of colour throwing them in prison for minor offenses and making a mockery of the idealistic idea that our criminal justice system is objective.

Donald Trump is in a good position to manipulate this. He has the privileges and the means to turn the law to his advantage, with his army of lawyers, deep pockets to buy justice, judges he appointed, control over the Republican Party, a cult following, and the political power...

Police investigates allegations of fraud and administrative offences involving board, management and contractors of PNG Ports "IndyWatch Feed Niugini"

Commissioner of Police Mr David Manning said the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary is currently investigating and prosecuting a number of transnational economic crimes allegations involving Papua New Guineans and foreigners.

Mr Manning said, Among the other on-going fraud cases, Police has formally commenced criminal investigation last month into the allegations of fraud and official corruption jointly reported on various local and international media platforms by ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) and the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project.

Commissioner of Police Mr David Manning [Photo supplied]

ABC News and OCCRP allege that former Chief Executive Officers of PNG Ports Corporation, Late Fego Kiniafa and Stanley Alphonse, were bribed by International Container Terminal Services Inc through an Australian, Don Matheson, to win the contract to operate Lae and Motukea Wharfs.

PNG Ports Corporation awarded the contract to operate the two major wharfs for a term of 25 years to ICTSI at the conclusion of the tedious Public International Tendering Process.

Prime Minister Hon James Marape, MP, publicly distanced himself and his government from any involvement in the reported allegations and ordered an independent investigation to verify their truthfulness.

Among other objectives, Police is conducting the investigation to establish if Late Fego Kiniafa, Stanley Alphonse, Don Matheson, ICTSI and any other interested parties committed any offences contravening PNG criminal laws.

This is a complex transnational economic crime investigation. PNG Ports Corporation awarded the contract to operate the two major container wharfs after undergoing a lengthy public international procurement process to the operator which is alleged of official corruption including foreign bribery.

This circumstance requires Police to also independently review the entire public tendering process undertaken by PNG Ports Corporation to determine whether the contract awarded to ICTSI was done...

Fans Jubilate As CAC Recorgnises Okumagba As President Of Super Eagles Supporters Club "IndyWatch Feed National"

SUPER EAGLES SUPPORTERS CLUB

LAGOS JUNE 14TH (URHOBOTODAY)-It was wild jubilation over the weekend as members of the Super Eagles Supporters Club who stayed true to the clubs constitution and stayed away from the charade of an election purportedly held in Abuja some months back finally regained ownership and rulership of their Club via a Government backed Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) document of incorporation.

The document, a certified true copy of the certificate of incorporation dated and signed by the Registrar-General of the Corporate Affairs Commission on the 9th of June 2023, affirmed the 10 Trustees of the club as being the bona-fide Owners and Directors while re-confirming the removal of the names of the dissidents who tried to hijack the day to day running of the club albeit, illegally.

For emphasis, the Trustees of SUPER EAGLES SUPPORTERS CLUB ABUJA incorporated on the 7th day of June, 2018 have been changed by resolution dated 6th day of June, 2023 as follows:

Joseph Ani, Chigozie Nnadi Chibuzor Anyaora , Obadiah Diji,

Nnaoma Chigbu,Dauda Alli, Dere Buwaghan, Olusola Oladejo, Owolabi Ayo ,Vincent Okumagba.

The certificate of Incorporation clearly stated. The likes of Johnson Dagana, Sam Pirar, Catherine Edum, Ibeakamma Okechukwu, Ijeoma Okechukwu and Olutoye Orishabiyi have now been removed from the list of the Trustees of the SESC, the certificate affirmed.

Vincent Okumagba is the Founder and President of SESC. He was FIFA Fan Leader for the World Cup, Qatar 2022. He left on a medical tourism abroad and some people tried to hijack the club from him. They have been suspended and normalcy has returned, Chief Chibuzor Anyaorah the Deputy Vice President of SESC explained to this reporter over the telephone.

It will be recalled that Vincent Okumagba only a fortnight ago, emerged as the 1st Vice Chairman of the African Football Supporters Association (AFSA) and the Delta born FIFA Fan Leader will be leading out 100 members of the Super Eagles Supporters Club to Australia and New Zealand for the FIFA Womens World Cup this summer to cheer the Super Falcons all the way at the Mundial.

Dumpling Wars "IndyWatch Feed National"

The Ukrainian blonde had the smell of trouble. She had perched herself, along with her mute friend, in a restaurant across from the famed South Melbourne Market. On arriving at the modish, glorious bit of real estate known as Tipsy Village, a Polish establishment famed for accented French cuisine, she shrieked: Why do you have Ruskie dumplings on your menu?

The Polish host, a man of butter mild manner and infinite tolerance, covered in stout glory, took it in his stride. That is what they are called where I come from and that is what we serve, Peter Barnatt stated with serene clarity. (Such wickedness! Such a radical disposition!) The blonde shrieking wonder continued to invest in the dumplings some satanic quality, as if each one had been a shell, soldier, a weapon massed and launched against her pristine homeland which she had, it seemed, abandoned. We would just like coffees, she demanded. His temper finally disturbed, the host insisted that, as the two were not intent on dining, might just as well leave.

In a luxurious huff, they exited. Such behaviour was fascinating for being irresolvable no dining establishment worth its salt and cutlery should ever change that aspect of things. But for them, the issue had been decided, a prejudice firmed up and solid.

Names on the menu are a signature of a restaurants worth. Besides, dishes do not invade countries in tanks nor bomb cities. The episode was also strikingly, amusingly moronic. Food had been made out as somehow guilty, disgusting, revolting all because of a name, an identity. The sin had moved in the dough, the mixture and the potatoes, dumplings with agency. The restaurateur was all the more guilty for hosting them.

Since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the gastro-culture war on serving dishes with a Russian name, be it with hint, flavour, or substance, has been total. Hatred of the Kremlin has become bigotry towards the dish. In Madrid, Sergiy Skorokhvatov, himself Ukrainian and an owner of a restaurant called Rasputin serving both Russian and Ukrainian cuisine, sensed trouble. He ventured into the thorny world of online discussions to clarify the nature of what he was serving, which was considered wise given what has happening to other restaurants serving Russian fare.

This method of insurance was not full proof. I thought that changing things would help us, but then people started posting similar stuff about us Dont go to Russian restaurants and pictures of blown-up buildings in Ukraine.

E.K. Clark Accuses Okowa As Crafty, Ambitious, Spends Delta Money On Atiku "IndyWatch Feed National"

CLARK AND OKOWA

LAGOS JUNE 14TH (URHOBOTODAY)-Elder statesman and Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Clark, on Wednesday, described the immediate-past governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa as a traitor and a very crafty man.

Clark also alleged that Okowa emerged as Atiku Abubakars running mate for the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after spending Delta States money on (Atikus) campaign.

He made the claim while appearing as a guest in an interview on Arise TVs Morning Show.

Clarke revealed that the 17 southern governors had, ahead of the 2023 presidential election, resolved to oppose any party that presented a northern presidential candidate in their primaries but Okowa went behind his colleagues to team up with Atiku.

Let me tell you the reason why the whole of southern Nigeria regards Okowa as a traitor. Let me tell you, he is a betrayer. Okowa volunteered to host a meeting of the 17 governors of the south. He provided accommodation for every one of them, Clark said.

He provided his secretariat, I know the person who was the secretary to the government at the time. They were there, they drafted the communique supervised by him and gave it to Akeredolu to read. He read it, then they all went to Lagos to confirm it, they went to Enugu to confirm it, not knowing that the same Okowa was spending our money for Atiku. I asked him in my letter to answer it.

He added, The delegates of the PDP primary, who did they vote for? Did they vote for Wike or Emmanuel Udom of Akwa Ibom? They all voted for Atiku. So, he deceived his colleagues that we should produce the president from the south only to team up with Atiku to betray us. All the governors know about that. He is a man who is very ambitious, quiet and gives a wrong impression about himself that he is a very good man. Very crafty man.

140623 ABG WILL NOT ALLOW FOREIGN INVESTORS WHO BREACH ITS LAWS
NEW DAWN FM NEWS
The Autonomous Bougainville Government will not allow foreign investors on Bougainville to breach its laws to exploit its people and resources.
Bougainville President Ishmael Toroama made this statement following the Bougainville Executive Councils decision to refuse the mineral license applications by joint-venture entities involving Wyndale Holdings Pty Ltd and its local partners.
The Bougainville Executive Council (BEC) is the authority on Bougainville that grants mineral exploration license applications upon advise from the Bougainville Mining Advisory Council.
The first application was for a mineral Exploration License over Eivo/Torau areas and the second was an application for an Artisanal Mining License over the Jaba middle tailings to lower tailings areas.
For the Eivo/Torau areas the BEC made the decision to refuse to grant an Exploration License to Paruparu Joint Venture Limited (PJVL); PJVL is a joint venture involving Wyndale and local company Karatapo Resources Limited.
President Toroama also announced that the BEC has also endorsed the decision by Mining Minister Robin Wilson not to grant an Artisanal Mining License to Bakeuroro Joint Venture Limited (BJVL). BJVL is a joint venture between Wyndale and local company Bakeuroro Investment Limited along the Java mid tailings to lower tailings areas.
Wyndale is a private Australian company with links to Australian Mr. Nickolajs Zuks who claims to have been issued mining licenses by the Autonomous Bougainville Government.
President Toroama revealed the governments decisions were purely based on application of law, wherein the applicants failed to meet the application requirements provided for under the Bougainville Mining Act 2015.
President Toroama warned that the ABG will not be entertaining companies and individuals who use duplicitous means to exploit Bougainvilles mineral resources.
The President further cautioned investors to be wary of being misled by and that the ABG will not be held liable for loses incurred as a result of fraudulent misrepresentations.

As Nauru refugees are resettled, Albanese government must take responsibility for those abandoned in PNG "IndyWatch Feed National"

Reports that the last people remaining in Nauru under Australia's offshore detention policy would soon leave the island have been welcomed by the Human Rights Law Centre, with a warning that the same must be done for those languishing in Papua New Guinea.

While the number of people remaining in Nauru continues to fall as a result of transfers to Australia and resettlement in in other countries, more than 80 people previously detained on Manus Island remain trapped in PNG, many with serious health problems caused by years of detention, isolation and medical neglect. Fourteen people have died while subject to offshore detention. More than one hundred people previously detained on Manus Island were abandoned in PNG when the former Coalition government announced the end of Australias involvement in offshore processing in the country at the end of 2021.

While no new transfers to Nauru or PNG have occurred since 2014, the Albanese government has confirmed that it will maintain facilities for offshore processing in Nauru as a contingency.

Scott Cosgriff, Senior Lawyer at the Human Rights Law Centre said:

Across more than a decade in Nauru and PNG, the Australian Government has inflicted untold suffering upon people merely asking for safety. Evacuating Nauru is the right thing to do. Anything less than the same approach in relation to PNG is a profound failure of people whose dire circumstances were caused by this policy and whose lives remain in the Australian Government's hands.

The Australian Government bears the same responsibility to the people it sent to PNG as to the people it sent to Nauru.

Too often, the victims of this policy have been shunted from one agonizing limbo to another. Those now rebuilding their lives in Australia must be allowed to live in freedom, without crippling visa restrictions and with certainty about their future.

Every person sent to Nauru or PNG has lost years of their lives and been separated from loved ones because of the intentionally punitive policies of successive Australian governments. Uncertain visa status has been weaponised to further punish people who have been transferred, and compel them to accept resettlement in third countries or return home. Its time for the Albanese government to take responsibility and ensure every person can rebuild their lives in safety and freedom.

New DDA Watch website to promote transparency "IndyWatch Feed Niugini"

Community advocacy organization ACT NOW! is today launching a new website, www.ddawatch.org to promote transparency and accountability in how government funds are used across all 94 Districts in Papua New Guinea.

The DDA Watch website will provide the general public, officials and academics with impartial and non-partisan information on the work of each District Development Authority, with the ultimate aim of helping to improve the quality of local infrastructure and service delivery.

District Development Authorities - or DDAs - were created in 2014 and this year will be responsible for spending almost K2 billion in government grants, but ACT NOW! says there is very little information available to the public on how those taxpayer monies are used.

Since the DDAs were created they have become a bit of a financial black hole. Every year the government has poured more and more money into the Authorities but the information on how the money is spent is almost impossible to find.

ACT NOW! says that institutions like the Department of Implementation and Rural Development (DIRD) and the Auditor General struggle to track and verify the spending because of the sheer number of Districts involved and the lack of easy access.

The districts also struggle to maintain effective communication and provide access to information. These ACT NOW! says are areas where the new website will help them.

DDA Watch will help the Districts to inform their constituents about their projects, plans, and spending and will allow officials to see who is doing a good job and where support might need to be targeted.

The website will provide contact details for each DDA and allow the Authority to make available copies of their development plans, annual budgets, and acquittal and inspection reports.

There will also be links to news stories concerning each DDA and its funded projects. The website will also encourage public participation in the democratic process through social auditing.

The website will allow the public to score the performance of their DDA and to submit comments and photographs on local District projects.

Each DDA will be scored and ranked according to the amount of publicly available information about its work and the views of its constituents.

Each DDA will score a maximum of 70 points if its contact information is up to date and it provides copies of its current development plan, annual budg...

From her reply and from the page linked to in that reply () I can see that Senator Allman-Payne speaks on behalf of all Greens Senators and Members of Parliament.

Nonetheless, I still think it critical that the case for Julian Assange be debated. From past experience, we can see that yet further statements in support of Assange or the presentation of more petitions will have zero impact on this government. Even a further Question Time question will only, at best, embarrass the Government momentarily, but do little to improve Assange's circumstances.

As I have written before, if, as has been the case up until now, Standing Orders don't allow supporters of Julian Assange to move a motion, such as my suggested motion of Monday 12 June (see Appendix 1 below), then move for a Suspension of those Standing Orders. Should the Speaker pronounce that procedural motion defeated, then, this time, call for a division so that the people of Australia will know - as Julian Assange faces extradition to the United States and imprisonment there for the rest of his life in conditions even worse than what he is now enduring at Belmarsh prison - which of their 'representatives' will have used their votes to preve...

AFTINET submission on the World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies "IndyWatch Feed National"

June 14, 2023: This agreement was signed at the WTO Ministerial meeting in June 2022 and is now being reviewed by the Joint Standing Committee on Treaties (JSCOT) before ratification by Australia. AFTINETs submission supports the recommendations of the Pacific Network on Globalisation (PANG), a network of community organisations in the Pacific Islands.

Our submission notes that the agreement is limited in scope and does not cover the full range of measures that contribute to overcapacity and overfishing. WTO negotiations on fisheries subsidies have, more recently, aimed to stop overfishing of all global fish stocks in line with the 2015 UN Sustainable Development Goal 14.6. This goal states that governments should prohibit and eliminate fisheries subsidies which contribute to overfishing  by 2020.

While the agreement addresses illegal and unregulated fishing it does not address subsidies which contribute to overcapacity and overfishing. These are to be addressed in further negotiations over the next four years.  As one of the main environmental and commercial threats comes from large trawling vessels conducting overfishing of fish stocks, including in international waters, this agreement fails to address those most responsible.

The submission also notes overfishing impacts most on small developing and least developed countries including the Pacific Islands which rely on small scale fishing and have the least technical and resource capacity for implementation of the agreement. This process is complicated and requires capacity and resources of developing country states, but the agreement does not provide guaranteed implementation resources for developing countries.

There are also some legal ambiguities which need to be clarified.

The submission re-asks the JSCOT to recommend that the Australian government

  • support speedy resumption of the negotiations for a more comprehensive agreement which will include rules that would prohibit subsidies that contribute to overcapacity and overfishing, and regulate the activities of large trawling vessels conducting subsidised overfishing of fish stocks, including in international waters
  • support mandatory assistance to developing and least developed countries for technical and capacity building to implement the more comprehensive agreement.
  • That the more comprehensive agreement include other appropriate provisions for developing countries, including longer implementation times
  • That in those negotiations t...

(AP Photo/Fateh Guidoum, file)

ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Tuesday is starting a three-day state visit to Russia meant to strengthen relations of friendship and cooperation at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, authorities said Tuesday.

The Algerian presidency said in a statement that Tebboune will attend an economic forum to be held this week in the city of St. Petersburg.

Putins invitation had been conveyed by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during his visit to Algiers in May last year with the aim of developing bilateral military, economic and humanitarian ties, and in other areas.

Some Algerian media have criticized the visit amid Russias war in Ukraine.

The timing is not at all appropriate, as this visit by the president could be understood as a bias in favor of Russia in its conflict with Ukraine, whereas officially, it has a position of neutrality, the Maghreb Emergent website wrote on Monday, raising concerns about a potential backlash from Western countries.

Tebboune answered a question on the issue during his last appearance on public television last month.

Russia is a friendly country which helped our revolution and with which we have historic political, diplomatic and economic relations, but we also have good relations with the United States and the countries of the European Union, he said.

Gas-rich Algeria is in a delicate position regarding its long-standing ties to Russia.

Israeli spyware undermines global democracy "IndyWatch Feed National"

A key part of my new book, The Palestine Laboratory, revolves around Israeli spyware.

US outlet In These Times has published an edited extract from this section.

Heres a taster:

Griselda Triana is a Mexican journalist, and human rights activist whose husband, Javier Valdez Crdenas, was slain by a drug cartel on May 15, 2017, in Culiacn, the capital of Sinaloa state. Valdez was the cofounder of the media outlet Riodoce, which investigated corruption and crime, and wrote about the bloody drug war. He paid the ultimate pricea grenade was thrown into his office in 2009. He had received death threats in the months before his murder, but he bravely continued his groundbreaking work despite the threats.

Ten days after his killing, Triana started receiving unexpected text messages on her mobile phone. She had no idea that they were suspicious until almost one year later, when it was discovered that there had been attempts to infiltrate her phone with the Pegasus system, a phone-hacking tool sold by Israeli surveillance company NSO Group, almost certainly by elements within the Mexican state. Before Javiers murder I did not know that we were being monitored, she told me. Javier had never informed her about the possibility of phone hacking, and she presumed that he was taking precautions for his safety. Javier knew about the risks of reporting criminal activities, but even so he was aware that someone had to document the atrocities of criminal organizations, she said.

Activist in defamation trial says not afraid of cost in fighting for
Papuan justice

CNN Indonesia June 8, 2023

Jakarta Human rights activist Haris Azhar says that that he was not
looking to create a problem with Coordinating Minister for Maritime
Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan over the issue of gold
mining in Intan Jaya regency, Papua.

This was conveyed by Azhar in response to Pandjaitans testimony during
a court hearing in a case of alleged defamation brought by Pandjaitan
against Azhar and fellow rights activist Fatia Maulidiyanti at the East
Java District court on Thursday June 8.

"Im not looking to create problems with bapak [you], Im just sad
seeing [the situation facing] the Papuan people", said Azhar in a
trembling voice.

Azhar said that the people of Intan Jaya have had to walk on foot into
the mountains for two hours to avoid armed conflicts in the region.
According to Azhar, no one cares about these refugees.

"Thats the problem, they have to climb up the mountains for two hours,
eight of their districts, not four. Theres no one to take care of these
refugees and theres Freeport [gold and copper mine] there, there are
soldiers", he said.

Pandjaitans supporters in the court meanwhile shouted and jeered at
Azhar hearing his voice tremble as he related the conditions of the
Papuan people. Azhar said he didnt want to be pitied.

"For all of you who think I am crying, I am not begging for mercy, go
ahead and punish me. I consider this stage to be my place to speak out.
If you cry because you laugh at Papuans, then leave this courtroom", he
said.

He further admitted that he was not afraid of the consequences that he
would face in the future for articulating justice for the people of
Papua.

"Im not afraid of anyone, [I'll] talk about justice and humanity with
anyone, people have often wanted to shoot me", he said.

Pandjaitan supporters

The crowd of pro-Pandjaitan supporters could be seen dominating the
visitors benches in the courtroom on Thursday, who showed their support
by loudly shouting and jeering when Azhar and Maulidiyantis lawyer
directed questions at Pandjaitan.

Most of the pro-Pandjaitan group wore white collared shirts with the
Bravo 5 emblem of the President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo volunteer group
headed by Pandjaitan on the right chest. They were seated on the
visitors bench to the left and right of the courtroom.

rights side, mixing in with Pandjaitans supporters.

In Indonesia, companies defy governments decision to revoke their permits "IndyWatch Feed Niugini"

JAKARTA The Indonesian governments decision to revoke hundreds of logging, plantation and mining permits across the country is marred with irregularities including companies continuing to operate or engage in conflicts with Indigenous and local communities, according to a new report. Furthermore, theres lack of clarity on how the permit revocations are carried out, prompting questions such as what will happen once the permits are rescinded, according to the report by Indonesias largest environmental NGO, WALHI. The report looked at a dozen companies whose permits were either revoked or are under investigation for potential rescinding by the government in the future. The report found at least four companies continued to operate even after their licenses were  identified as rescinded. These companies are logging company PT Nusa Pala Nirwana (NPN) in North Maluku and palm oil companies PT Permata Nusa Mandiri (PNM) in Papua as well as PT Banyan Tumbuh Lestari (BTL) and PT Inti Global Laksana (IGL) in Gorontalo. All four companies are on the list of nearly 200 corporate entities targeted in a mass cancellation of permits in January 2022. President Joko Widodo announced the mass revocations in early 2022 on the basis that the companies that were awarded the concessions were deemed to be moving too slowly in exploiting natural resources. The affected concessions include environment ministry permits for 192 logging, plantation, mining and ecotourism operations totaling 3.13 million hectares (7.73 million acres); 36 land ministry permits for plantations (34,448 ha, or 85,123 acres); and 2,343 energy ministry permits for mines. This article was originally published on Mongabay
